Lisinopril And Acid Reflux?
(Newest replies first)

Updated

I started taking lisinopril a couple of years ago. I never really got the cough. However I got acid reflux that was debilitating. I was prescribed pantoprazole for that. I hate the long term side effects and was looking for an alternative - and wondering how I suddenly got reflux. I stopped the pantoprazole two weeks ago and am coping with apple cider vinegar. After some research it seems that lisinopril can cause stomach issues. So I stopped that yesterday and am drinking hibiscus tea instead. Has anyone else had acid reflux disease as a result of lisinopril?

I was on lisinopril after a heart attack. Never a stomach issue in my life, now debilitating. A scope showed nothing substantial. The dr said the med cant cause it, but I believe one of the meds has to. Dr said it's anxiety which I could believe in the beginning, but not for a year nonstop. I did take antibiotics a few months ago and it lessened the pain. Now im back again. The dr gave me proton 8x, pepcid and carafate as to help. I stopped the protonix and use pepcid and carafate when it's horrible. Otherwise I deal with it and hope I don't bleed because of the blood thinners I'm on. I havent tried the cider but have heard about it. Does it actually work?

It is DEFINITELY the Lisinopril!! I was on it for 10 years at 80 mg!! I can’t believe that none of my health professionals questioned the dosage. I quit going to the doctor that prescribed that amount, but even my new doctor (actually a P.A., but I really like her and she’s the best GP I’ve ever had. For some reason she never noticed that my prescription was 40 mg 2x day!! I think every time a refill came up, she was just seeing the 40 mg on the bottle and not the 2x/day. But even the Pharmacist from my insurer who calls a couple times a year to go over your prescriptions never said a word and worst yet is that my pharmacist never questioned it and he’s a friend!! When I told my new P.A. about the dosage she asked when I was prescribed it, which was 10 years ago, and she said that back then, doctors thought that more was better!! A couple of months ago I got my usual refill but it was a different generic (Solco), and it made me really sick. That’s when I really started researching Lisinopril and what I discovered is terrifying!!

That is probably the most harmful long term drug you can take and then when you stop taking it, you will have long lasting side effects for weeks, months and even years even after the drug is out of your body (usually 3-4 days). I stopped taking it cold turkey after complaining about the Solco and I even discussed with the pharmacist that I will NOT TAKE ANY DRUG MADE IN CHINA OR INDIA!! She looked up different generic companies and told me it looked like Parma was made here, but when my husband brought it home, it was Lupin. I took one pill and my blood pressure shot up to 200 and I started itching really bad. My whole right forearm was red and swollen and itching like crazy, so I did not take 1 more. The next day I told my pharmacist about it and he said don’t take it anymore ~ duh! But, I got a little off track here ~ about 3 years ago I started getting terrible bouts of gastritis and I blamed it on the amount of steroid shots in my back that I had gotten over the last 5 years. I also had started getting terrible tinnitus, which I NEVER associated with BP meds. I also have chronic back pain, which I think the Lisinipril had something to do with (it made the pain I had started getting worse). I think it contributed to my recent cataract surgery in both eyes and a small amount of macular degeneration.

There are so many other things that I can think of looking back ~ general aches and pains, fatigue, weight gain and more. I quit cold turkey because the new generics were intolerable. I have been researching generic drugs for the past year(starting with pain meds for my chronic back pain). There is a really huge problem with bad generics in pain medication ~ all ones that are manufactured in China and India and they are garbage!! You can research the problem with the new generics being manufactured in the last couple of years. The People’s Pharmacy has an excellent article on that subject (it was meant for doctors and pharmacists to read also). Doctors don’t have a clue what is happening!! I did so much research in the last year and what I have found is frightening. Most people don’t know that some of the larger pharmacies can order a certain generic brand for you, but you first have to ask them before your doctor prescribes a med and then the doctor HAS TO SPECIFICALLY PUT THAT BRAND ON THE PRESCRIPTION AND SAY “AS MEDICALLY NECESSARY”. I just switched to Micardis (brand name) to replace Lisinopril. It is an ARB, not an ACE. It still has some side effects that I’m hoping will get better after adjusting to it and until I can naturally bring my BP down. I would advise anyone who is taking Lisinopril to get off it ASAP, but first do your research to find a safer replacement. Good luck!!

Re: Mary (# 5) Expand Referenced Message

Heartburn worsened to unbearable. Dr had me on pepcid ac and protonix. Had upper n lower scope. Gastro Dr had me on carafate which helps pain. Primary took me off said it won't allow heart meds to absorb. 3 Mos agiby. Heart dr removed Lisinopril added entresto almost 2wk now. Not for heartburn but did heart wasn't improving enough. Then gstro added back carafate 2x day instead reg 4x . Something is little better. Not sure removal of one or addition of other. Hope is not messing with absorbing other meds. Such a pain trying and experimenting. I think all issues are still there just one is making the pain.

Horribly bad gastro. Trying to see if it's lisinopril or xarelto. Taking protonix per dr but seems silly if it's cause is a pill I still take. It also had bad side effects

Yes, all the time, but I need the lisinopril. I need to ask my doctor if I can take another type of blood pressure medicine.

I have been taking lisinopril for about 6 years now, but now my insurance is requesting mail-in orders and its another brand. I am having acid reflux after a week and a half of the new brand name. Could that be a cause?

Hello, Gerdie! How are you doing?

Most prescription medications can cause acidity issues as a side effect, according to the FDA. They can often be mitigated by making sure to take them with food, or by taking an antacid with them. I've had the same issue with my blood pressure and heart medications, so I know how frustrating it can be. I take Pepcid, since it is available over the counter, you may want to consider trying it, if your doctor feels it is safe for you to do so.

Please be careful with stopping the Lisinopril abruptly, it could cause dangerous rebound elevations in your blood pressure and heart rate.

Have you been checking your blood pressure regularly?
