Levothyroxine Side Effects (Page 4) (Top voted first)

Updated

I was recently diagnosed with an underactive thyroid. I have been taking levothyroxine for almost two weeks. For the last four or five days I have had a weird feeling. It is hard to explain. I don't really feel dizzy but I get a strange feeling in my head. I guess you would describe it as a head rush. Has anyone else had this feeling and will it go away as my body adjusts to the levothyroxine?

Day 8 here. Yes, same feeling. Hoping it gets better. Many other side effects as well. Worst side effect due to pain is my teeth come and go with root canal like pain targeting only certain teeth at a time.

That lasted a couple days. Now the debilitating pain lethargy and weight gain bloating are sticking it to me. I am on a very strict diet and not losing an ounce. What a friggin nightmare. How much more do you all pay for Armor, synthroid and the like? I am on a budget but this is hell.

I had a total thyroid removal a month ago and yes I do get a head rush, brain frog, and dizzy from the levethyroxine. However, to make things more complicated I also take Flomax. Flomax can cause you to be dizzy upon standing. Does anyone out there take Levothroxine and Flomax?

I just started on Levothyroxine 0.05 mg or 50 mcg today and I feel a little speedy. I'm concerned because my blood pressure has been normal for over a year taking 80 mg of Diovan daily. Now that I have to take Levothyroxine and feel this speediness I feel like my blood pressure is up. Any experienced people taking both of these medicines? Thanks.

I just started taking levothyroxine about two weeks ago. I'm only seventeen years old and I can barely get up in the morning! I constantly have a brain fog, which causes my memory to be practically elusive. Also I feel light-headed and moody constantly. Should I switch to Armour or another drug?

My meds were increased from 75 to 100 and since the increase the fuzzy, lightheaded, dizzy feeling has been here for about 2 weeks. At times, it leads to an upset stomach. Did not do this to lose weight but it has helped somewhat. Anyone have any relief for these feelings?

After 7 years of pain in lower body area, I was told by the Doc's I have the pain in my head. Then one day the Doc discovered that i had over- active thyroid. Since then 2 years of changing meds and Doc's I had the Radioiodine Treatment, felt normal for 2 weeks. Now I am under active/hypothyroid and ended up in the emergency unit for heart failure/is presently on all meds to prevent further heart attack and is also placed on Levothroxine-100mg. Now i can relate to all those people out there who are in the same boat as i am, just awaiting the turning-tide to just sink the boat and take us all to the bottom of the ocean. You name it I experience it. Dizziness, low heart beat, nausea, bloated after eating, fatigue/tiredness after eating a good meal, feel like falling into coma at 5 in the morning, cold feet and hands, high pressure/low pressure, headache leading to muscular spasm back of neck. Sometimes i question my self, sometimes the Doc's treatment/sometimes i want to throw all the meds away/ sometimes i want to stick to the treatment and then i went and typed in the word Levothyroxine and got this site- at least i am able to tell and understand that there are other people suffering out there like myself. I consider myself a normal human being and so far managed to reach the age of 60 and i believe we should all try to think ourselves back into the healthy people we once were/ unless we all want to be drug addicts to prescribed drugs.

I think a lot of people do not allow the medication a chance to work. It takes months and sometimes over a year to get regulated. Many people don't research what their levels should be at and when their dr says they are therapeutic at 5 (tsh) they go with it (although the medical associations and labs have changed what is normal many still go by the old numbers which were erroneous) In reality normal is .25-2. I felt like ick for a year and a half until I finally got to 2.5 and now another half year and I am finally felling amazing at 2. If your thyroid has been bad for years you will NOT grow your hair back. Once it is gone for a year or two not matter what medication you go on for your thyroid you will not get it back. However you can try rogaine. I am a woman and I use the 5% foam that says for men only. I am not going to have children and by dr has said that this is fine to use as long as you are not planning on getting pregnant. With my thyroid regulated all the things you are all describing as being symptoms from the drug (heart palps, sore muscles, weight gain, dizziness, brain fog) are all gone, I think in many cases they are a result of an under medicated condition, people don't give the medication a chance to work and don't get their tsh low enough to feel good. A great source of info on this is the About.coms thyroid page. She has some good info. I hope you all feel better!

To anyone taking synthethic thyroid medication (i.e. Levothyronine, Levothyroxine, Synthroid, etc.): the following info may change your life. Try natural (plant-based) bioidentical thyroid replacement. I have hypothyroidism and have been taking T3 Triiodoliothyronine (plant-based) for a year. If you live in Southern California, look up the Holtorf Medical Group in Torrance or Whitaker Wellness Center in Newport Beach. If you can, schedule an appointment (ask re:insurance coverage first). Also, read Suzanne Somers' book,Ageless: The Naked Truth About Bioidentical Hormones. READ THIS BOOK- IT WILL CHANGE YOUR LIFE!!! She explains how how hormone levels (DHEA, Thyroid, Progesterone, Estrogen, Testosterone, etc.,) are the cause of side effects including hair loss, anxiety, depression, increased anger, etc.,). If you don't live in SoCal, call Whitaker Wellness and/or Holtorf Medical and see if they refer you to somewhere to go outside California for bioidentical hormone replacement. If I can help at least one person with this info, it's very much worth it to me posting this :)

I am taking Synthroid for about 6 or 7 years now. I've never experienced any of the side effects mentioned above. I feel perfectly fine and my thyroid is functioning within normal range.

When I started thyroid treatment in Sept 2007, my TSH level was 85 (yes - near 100). My MD started me on Synthroid but my wonderful pharmacy changed it to Levothyroxine, (insurance reasons or whatever - I hate when they give you generic instead of brand - there IS a difference). As of 5/5 blood work, I am down to now the other end of the spectrum @ .003. I am currently on .30 mg/day and they lowered me to .25 so we'll see. My body aches, sleeplessness, irritability, etc., but all are also signs of menopause & at 48 I'm not surprised at all. So, if anyone else is in my boat - give me a shout out with ideas.

I'm a mature med student & I was started on levothyroxine (50mcg) 6 weeks ago because my T4 was 4.6 and TSH was through the roof. I went from being shattered to being nauseaus, shattered, light headed with indigestion. After 3 weeks I decided I couldn't face taking it any more so I told my doctor I rather just sleep my life away. He was totally unhelpful so sense persuaded me to try taking it (50mcgs) with food. Much better now I just have unbearable indigestion and nausea. I know I should persist but I have to give myself 'days off' for my sanity.

Hi Nicky, I forgot to say. If you don't take it you can eventually look forward to your hair falling out, your skin becoming very dry and flaky, even worse depression, memory problems... need I go on. I'm struggling with the effects of it but I'm plodding on as there is not alternative and I have improved since I started taking it at the beginning of June and I'm looking forward to feeling good again eventually.
