Levothyroxine Side Effects (Page 17)
(Newest replies first)

Updated

I was recently diagnosed with an underactive thyroid. I have been taking levothyroxine for almost two weeks. For the last four or five days I have had a weird feeling. It is hard to explain. I don't really feel dizzy but I get a strange feeling in my head. I guess you would describe it as a head rush. Has anyone else had this feeling and will it go away as my body adjusts to the levothyroxine?

I get this "burn" in the base of my skull. Is this really worth it? However, it has stopped all the hair loss.

I have been taking 25 mcg daily for about 7 weeks. My throat has been sore for days. I mean for like 4 weeks for 5 weeks now. I went to the doctor and they prescribed and antibiotic but my throat is still killing me. Has anyone else had anyhting like this going on?

Absolutely ask your doctor. I finally cornered mine and asked just how low my thyroid was and do I really need to be on any medication...Well guess what... I dont' need to be on the medication. Years on levo and all the problems it caused and my thyroid was not that low that I really needed to be on any medication. So my heart got messed up for nothing. Hopefully after being off for a few years things will get back to normal. Good luck everyone.

To anyone on this medicine: please ask your doctor about natural alternatives to this. If he doesn't know (and he probably won't - if he's honest he'll say so), ask your pharmacist (always the best person to ask about drugs.).

Today's doctors have little training in drugs; the pharm company reps visit the docs and push their drugs, and the docs take their word for it regarding their products. Many, many of todays drugs are dangerous, over-prescribed, unnecessary - please educate yourself and look for alternatives.

Also - any doctor who prescribes this drug to help you lose weight should be shot. Find a new doc, get off the drug, and get some exercise.

For menopausal women: please educate yourself! Docs are prescribing unnecessary (and dangerous) drugs for thyroid, pre-osteoporosis, etc.

What is normal for you may not be normal for someone else; but all diagnosis are given based on statistics. It's a 'likelihood' game, barring obvious and severe illness.

doctors make me laugh! It is our body so we should know how and what we feel. When my doctor told me it was anxiety I laughed to myself and said she is not listening to me. It happens after I take the pill I told her, few hours later and on and off all day and night. Fine, send me to psychiatrist well psychiatrist told me nothing wrong with me, its the doctor cause she wont listen to me and and she said it is side effects from the thyroid pill. She was going to send a letter to my doctor telling her I am sane and its the meds., who knows what is gonna happen now. Called my doctor and left message with the nurse to tell her I stopped the pill and that doctor has to find me another med, but so far nothing. Cannot believe doctors think the know it all and they dont because if they did I would not be in this position. Years ago I was treated for high blood pressure and I never even had it. The pills made me blow up and I ended having to go to a nephrologist for my blood pressure and he monitiored me and said I never had blood pressure and why the hell was I put on meds. Had to stay on a water pill for months to get the fluid and swelling off me, doctor said if your put on a medication that you dont need, your body rejects it and you start to get symptoms. So as you see, I guess I can say that I scared of new meds and doctors and my reasons are valid. Good luck to you and to all.

I have only been taking levo for about one week but I have experienced anger and depression and want to eat all the time, I wanted to lose weight not put it on so I am going to really try not to over eat, but if this keeps up I am going to go back to the doctors and ask him to change the dosage.

I have been on levothyroxine for over a year or more and then started to get the shakes, sweating, crying, racing thoughts. I told my doctor and she says oh its anxiety, you need a psychiatrist. I stopped the pill and after a few weeks all my symptoms stopped and I did go to a psychiatrist and she said nothing wrong with me, it was side effects from the medicine, doctor said start it again, I did and they all came back and I stopped for good because I cannot live like that. Have to try and find a new pill. You will be fine, talk to your doctor and tell him/her how you feel. Take care and keep in touch if you want.

I suggested to my Dr that maybe he should do a bit of research and he seemed to think I was insane so I simply suggested that if it was all in my head I wanted a psychiatric referral. After a long pause he relented and agreed to treat 'me' and not the damned results on the screen. No, I haven;t found the answer. Yes, I still have some side effects including all that's been mentioned but because I now am free to take it as suits me they are more in control. Basically, if the side effects are bad I miss a few doses and then take a low dose alternate days and slowly increase every few weeks until I get back to where I was. This way I've crept up to 50mcgs most days over about 6 months. (apparently I'm aiming for 100mcgs before my next blood test... figure it'll take a year or so if ever).

Too bad doctors don't check out the internet more often. Just like with levothyroxine, other things are posted that have an abundance of information. How can they say they never heard of side effects when all these people post them? However, my doctor doesn't listen either, so guess they wouldn't bother reading these anyway...

I am a 41 year old female with extremely mild hypothryroid and am on 25 mcg and feel extremely foggy. It's to the point that it's hard to make decisions and hold a conversation without feeling kind of drunk or heavy headed. I too am more edgy and aggravated, but I'm not sure if it's because I feel so abnormal that it's making me edgy or mad that I just want to feel normal and be able to function. The dizziness even makes me feel a little bit nauseous like I have car sickness or came off a ride. Being that I am only mildly hypo, I am seeing my DR to see if this is really necessary. I can't be on this med and have this feeling for life. I am so glad I found this site as when I called my DR they made me feel crazy when I told them I was feeling so dizzy and foggy that I was going to stop taking the med. They told me they never heard Levo causing this and that is was probably unrelated. Thanks for all your input!

Diagnosed hypo with multi nodular goiter 1973-eventually shut thyroid down, so no function at all. Have taken natural and synthetic-natural was difficult to control, generics work for some, I found taking the same brand consistently works best(the pharmacies will switch brands and when they do you have re-regulate) needing bloodwk every six months until at desired levels. It takes time-I have a hard time with either extreme cold or hot weather, which is a side effect, some hair loss after med changes which for me grows back, don't take Synthroid with coffee or I get palpitations could be caffeine related, try to take meds same time of day-I take mine late afternoon(I know they say first thing in AM, but I need coffee-LOL), no antacids or calcium with med as it affects absorption. Have experienced, fatigue, wt gain, wt loss, dizzyness, ht palpitations, body aches. hair loss, brain fog, internal tremors, lizard skin-I guess patience and going back for rechecks, finding a med that works for you is the key. Take care and best of luck to everyone going thru this.

I think they need to come up with a different medicine. This one is not good for anyone with all the side affects. My doctor wants me to go on it again, but I am so scared of the way it made me feel last time that I cannot swallow one pill.

I started taking levothyroxin 2 weeks back (25 mg) for hypothyroidism and I hate it. My throid level is 3.77 and my doctor wants it to increase. I am 46 years old and female. It makes me feel dizzy, its almost like a head rush. I am perpetually hungry and if I dont eat something every few hours I feel like a vaccuum has been turned on inside my stomach. I feel weird sigh

That is not good at all. That sounds like an allergic reaction to me. I have been on the meds for 12 years, and i hate them, but i have to take it becuase i had an underactive thyroid, but it is now overactive.

Hi Ciara, It sounds crazy but you could try and contact the drug company on the information sheet in your tablet box and ask them for help. I'm still plodding on but can't get past the 50mcg without a racing heart which makes me faint so I'm probably not the best to give advice. I'm sticking with the 50mcg and will probably try homeopathy at some point to support my whole system rather than as a substitute.
