Levothyroxine Side Effects (Page 16)

I was recently diagnosed with an underactive thyroid. I have been taking levothyroxine for almost two weeks. For the last four or five days I have had a weird feeling. It is hard to explain. I don't really feel dizzy but I get a strange feeling in my head. I guess you would describe it as a head rush. Has anyone else had this feeling and will it go away as my body adjusts to the levothyroxine?
Some of the symptoms that are discribed are not necessarily symptoms of the medicine but of the condition. I've taken 175mcg of this medication for several years. Early on when I was first diagnosed I felt some of the same symptoms. It wasn't until my doctor finally got the dose right did I start feeling good. Some other things I would like to point out that have helped are the regularity of taking the meds on an empty stomach in the AM. Have your iron checked, not just the iron itself but the binding properties because thyroid issues and anemia go hand in hand which also causes the dizziness and tiredness and also have your vitamin D checked because this goes with anemia. Low vitamin D can cause all kind of muscle aches, joint pain and fatigue. I really believe that I suffered needlessly before it was determined that my vitamin D was super low. In fact it was a chiropractor who suggested I get that tested. As long as my doctor can control these three things that seem to be totally related I feel good. Every blood test I get includes all these tests. Find a good doctor that is willing to look at the whole puzzle and not just a piece. I hope this helps someone.
As most of you are finding out, taking medications has a very temporary effect. Instead of trying to manage your symptoms with a drug (only for the doctor to be satisfied because your blood test is normal, even though you aren't) you need to find a doctor that addresses the cause of your symptoms not simply your symptoms. Look for a functional medicine doctor in your area.
Have been taking this medication since Sunday July 17 and I was feeling a bit dizzy but today I got a real buzz I had to stand totally still, hold on to a gate and the world was spinning. Didn't like the feeling at all. Does this go away? Also have been feeling as if it's a little hard to swallow at times. Is this part of the side effects too?
take nature-thyroid instead not covered by medicaid but a 1 grain dose only cost me $8.39 with my AAA card for discount,
I had the same feeling when I was on too high of a dosage. Check with your doctor to see if your's may be a little too much.
I have been taking levothyroxine for a year. I am experiencing panic attacks, extreme weight gain, bloating, and etc. Doctor will not change dosage of 75mcg. I am 73 years old, clinical counselor, and teacher. Help.
Yes it has been known to cause muscle aches and pains, stiff joints, etc. It also can cause heart problems. I had all the above. Finally asked my doctor just how low my thyroid was and she said only a little low. I am off all meds now. What a relief. My heart is getting stronger again and my ankles and knees don't ache anymore. I would recommend asking your doctor for a natural replacement. Something like Armour Thyroid which doctors has prescribed for more than 50 years before the synthetic levothyroxine came on board. Good luck and I hope you feel better soon.
Do not know how to describe how I feel on Levo. I just feel like I am going to die. It is an awful feeling. I take it as soon as I wake up, go to restroom, feed some cats, make coffee and drink two cups with diet sugar and powdered cream. In the morning, I am not going to drink coffee to see how that makes me feel. Also my legs ache all the time. Do not know if it is the thyroid meds or not.
yes I'm having noticable hair loss, and have been on this med 25mcg ,one month, will talk to my doc soon.
meanwhile have cut dose in 1/2.
I've been taking levothyroxine for about four year and has been suffering with brain fog, itchy skin and tendeon pain in the shoulders. The pain is worse at night when laying down. I stop taking the med for a while and the pain in the shoulders stopped within two week...had to get back own the meds and now the pain has started again.
Hello all thisnisna very informative site so we can all learn to live with thyroid disease. That said I have been on synthroid for 25 years it runs in the family, hoer and hypo. I am hypo as I began Meds it was a very low does .25 mgs now I am on 1.75. I have never had any of the side effects as described here, actually to the contrary I felt great right out the gate. I am thinking that if you have difficulty with symptoms to take your supplement at night before bed until your does is regulated. It takes many weeks to adjust your levels. Thyroid does control many functions of the body that most are unaware of. The most important advise I can give is not to go to a regular MD but an Endocronogolist. You need to be adamant about your health care with this disease. I hope this will help some and feel free to contact me if you have any questions.
Hi Mindy, Get your GP to give you a short course of a PPI (even your pharmacist may be able to give it to you). A short months course sorted out my stomach problems. (PPIs reduce the acid your stomach produces)
Yes! On Levothyroxine for 3 months now and I've noticed the same - I can not eat as much as before, and after I eat, I feel like an absolute ogre! It stays for hours. My stomach just bloats so huge!
well! now I don't feel like i am alone. been on levo for 4 weeks. I always feel like i have a hangover!foggy, shaky, difficulty concentrating.i'm going to stop taking it and see how I feel.the other day while out i had migraine symptoms. i'm 60 and have never had a migraine inmy life. but, i have been having headaches, dull, annoying ones. anyone else have this problem?
I have been taking Levothyroxine for six months and have had chronic stiff neck and shoulder pain. I weened myself off and was taking iodine plus 2 which helped me significantly however I am now getting the symptoms back of low enery, loss of hair, etc. It is time to seek the doctor for another medication. I know the medication is causing stiffness and neck pain, hair loss.
yes, i've had the same problems. the foggy head, dizzy, buzzing or zapping feelings. that is my indication that my dosage needs to be upped. also, tired and moody. my dr. told me for 2 yrs my levels were fine, i changed drs and they said i was low. so, i dont know how a dr could mess that up but they do. i had another dr (just after childbirth) tell me my levels needed to be lower, i disagreed with him and he insisted. 2 months later, many pounds later and feeling awful, i insisted they retake the test and have someone else read the results, sure enough, i needed the dosage tripled!!! trust you gut feeling,
Interesting you should have that side effect. I've been on Levothryoxine for a year and a half now. My main side effect has been hoarseness but I have had a sore throat for several weeks now that won't go away. Wonder now if its the medication!
are you guys aware that there are natural medecines for hypothyroidism, Some doctors will not prescribe it for you. The will refuse. $$$$$ Some doctors however will. Do your research. Doctors do not always care about what is best for you. They need sick people to make money.... Also did you know that the fluoride in your drinking water is aggravating your thyroid problems? You really need to do research and not trust the doctors blindly. Take charge of your health. Get informed
Yes it causes heart palpitations, skipped beats, irratic beating. Also causes painful joints on some people, I was one. My doctor finally took me off meds. Said my thyroid was not that low and we would keep checking it periodically. Thank God is all I can say!
OMG, ARE YOU SAYING IT CAUSES HEART PROBLEMS?
