Levothyroxine Is Satan (Page 5)
UpdatedI don't feel so confused anymore. Now I know all of you are going through the same thing. My doctor put me on 50mcg of Levothyroxine about a month ago and I have gain 8 pounds! I get short-breathed and winded REALLY easily when working out. I used to go to the gym for 2 hours, now I can't make it longer than 30 minutes. I wake up ALL the time with tingly fingers because my hands have fallen asleep. I have headaches, I feel 100 times more lazy than before...and it's supposed to help your energy, not drain it. I e-mailed my doctor today, this is not making me happy. Not to mention I now have an acne type rash that burns like hell on my chin and I've always had clear skin. If this drug is supposed to make you feel better it sure as sh*t isn't working for me. I feel like a fat lazy a$$ with an itchhy burning rash on my face... stay away from this drug, that's my suggestion. :(
Steph:
I have been taking Synthroid since 2002 and have gained a total of 45 pounds! I would love to know more about the organic natural path you are taking that cured you. I only have half a thyroid so I feel doomed to take something for the rest of my life. Hopefully natural at least.
Well I've been on Levo and for the last couple of months on Eltroxin a different version since April 2009 all 50 mcg. I have had a rash on my forehead like little white spots in a cluster which when squeezed excrete a little hard stuff. I've also had little areas of dry spotty skin about 2 centimetres in diameter on my body. Also lots of spots on my back. I know it's the meds but lately I've also had a tired feeling in the afternoons which was the original symptom of my Hypothyroidism. I have now had a boil appear which is something I have never had in my life before. I have stopped the meds and will wait and see how it goes. My TSH levels were OK on the meds. I am going to see my GP after Xmas to perhaps try something else. I am a male 62 year old.
Hi Clive, exactly the same problem. I was on the same pills also. My doc wouldn't take my word for it even though I knew these problems started when I started treatment. I decided to come off these pills 4/5 weeks ago and my problems have started to go but I think it will take a bit more time to adjust and for this spot problem to completely disappear... It's so tough to get a doctor to listen and it made me realise that you really have to take your own route and trial a few options. Do not let a doc bully you into taking the pills or scare you into trying your own method. Also beware of reading too much on here. I went a bit crazy by reading everyone else’s stories. Good Luck and remember you know your body better than anyone!
I have been on Levothyroxine for almost a year now and I was struggling in the beginning with my weight as well. Then I decided to research the medication. I was doing it all wrong, every thing hat caused an adverse reaction to this medication, I was doing it without knowing. I was taking my meds every morning with coffee, very bad move. Coffee absorbs the med and renders it utterly useless. Also I thought it was a good idea to take a multivitamin with it as well, again, wrong. The iron and calcium in the vitamin was absorbing what was left and rendering it utterly useless. I started taking it every morning with a tall glass of water and on an empty stomach. Then I would wait an hour before my coffee and breakfast, so much better. I also started taking my vitamin at night before bed. My workout routine is much better without that sluggish feeling after. My weight has started dropping (dropped 25lbs in 2 months) and my energy has increased. Guess I should have researched before, then I wouldn't have put myself through all the bloodtests to find out why it wasn't working. A doctor doesn't know what we don't tell them, it is up to us to inform them. Research your meds, it truly is eye opening.
Well I've been off the meds for about 6-8 weeks. My spots on my back have cleared up and thankfully no more boils. I am also not feeling tired so will continue as I am and see how it goes.
I have been on it for 10 years and have put on an additional 120 lbs. I have never been heavy in my life and although I keep fussing with my DR about this they seem to think it is no big thing. I want off this drug because I have so many other problems I am now finding associated with it too. Looking for answers.
Actually, the pimples along your jaw line suggests a toxin is excreting through your skin as a result of stress. My first guess would be from the lymphnodes local to the ruptures which may mean the medication is "cleansing" your thyroid. If that were me, I would be requesting a referral to see an endocrinologist or dermatologist, or both, to get to the bottom of it. In our society, appearances are everything so I too agree that it is something to be dealt with head on. Good luck
I have been taking 50mcg of levothyroxine for a month now and have lost 6 lbs! I notice a little more energy and not as much arm numbness at night. I have enormously high cholesterol and dr. said this could help along with pravastatin. I quit taking paxil a yr. ago was a very hard withdrawl process, antidepressants make you gain weight! I am now at 128 and 5'2" so nearly in perfect range for my age (52) and height. I have found levothyroxine to be a miracle!
My daughter has been on levo for 5-6 years. Has anyone have trouble with their EYES? One or the other at a time gets smaller and swollen then the other. She sleeps around the clock & suffers from all the rest of the problems mentioned in the previous post.
Angie....you have only been on it for 4 weeks. All HELL broke lose in my body after being on it for 5-6 weeks. I thought it was working great too until the 5th week. It caused the most horrendous chemical and hormonal imbalance for the last 7 months. IT HAS BEEN HELL!!! I started also having seizures and had to have an MRI and EEG. I was allergic to the crap chemical fillers that they use in this horrible GENERIC version of synthroid. For a lot of people on here, it's the chemical fillers that people are reacting too. I've even had my brain chemistry tested and it through off all my neurotransmitters and it has been a roller coaster of emotional hell since. I also started getting my period every 7 days, when i usually get it every 5 weeks. i also broke out in boils all over my arms and shoulders (this med is not "cleansing the toxins" as someone suggested....it IS a toxin that is causing a hormonal imbalanced and it means you are allergic to it. Synthroid isn't much better but at least it doesn't use bad fillers. I got off of Levo after being on it for 7 weeks and have had side affects since. But after seeing a naturopath and a functional neurologist, I finally feel that I am coming back into balance.
I switched to ERFA Dessicated thyroid that can be bought from Universal Drug store in Canada. They call your doctor to get a prescription from them. Sometimes it's tough to find a doctor who will prescribe natural thyroid because they are so paid off by the drug companies. People who take this have zero side effects. HEED THE WARNINGS OF PEOPLE ON THIS SITE AND WEEN OFF OF IT ASAP.
Not everyone has the same reaction to Levothyroxine and synthroid. Infact, while I do real well on one brand of Levothyroxine, I do not do well AT ALL on another. Essentially, we all have to do our own research and be our own advocate.
As a nurse, I know that one brand of Levothyroxine is not the same as another so when my pharmicist decided to change my brand I asked him to write down the brand I was on so I could go else where. The components, or fillers, are what causes the reactions we all experience. So my best advice is to go talk with your pharmicist and ask them to change the brands until you find one that doesn't cause the undesirable side effects.
The brand I am currently on prevents me from losing weight, while the brand my pharmicist switched me to made me feel 10x worse than I did without any medication. The changes only took a week and it was 7 days too long. I even felt better just not taking it at all!!
Now I just have to advocate for my self to find out what changes can be made so I can lose weight. Even if it means requesting a referral to see an endocrinologist.
I take 125 mg of levoxythoxine. (Synthroid). So that is why I can't lose weight. I always thought it sped up your metabolism. Well forget that. I'm not taking that stuff anymore.
I have been on thryroid meds for almost 10 years..just recently mine has started making me gain weight. my skin burns so bad water hurts..I am tired..irritable.. I get the rash on my forehead & also get brown spots that used to go away with treatment.. they are now spotting my face,, arms..& legs
I live in Shreveport and have been through 3 different meds for hypothyroidism. If there is a doctor in Dallas which is 2 hours and 45 minutes away that could help me I would appreciate it so much.
Thank you!
Have anyone ever thought that the hypothyroidism could be` another symptom to another disorder? My daughter has the same problem and her hypothyroid, eye symptoms, dizziness, passing out, female problems, weight problem, etc. All indicate other disorders such as Graves syndrome, Cushions and several other.
But her BIGGEST PROBLEM IS FINDING A DOCTOR
WHO GIVES A DAMN.
if you live in or near Oklahoma city, the perosn I recommend for thyroid is Linda Lea, she is a nurse practitioner & she is very good.. went above & beyond in the testing.. she mentioned adrenile fatigue & seems to know what she is doing. She is an RN with a BHN...
Where do you live? I know a great doctor, but odds are good you aren't near where I live. :(
currently I live in Ky, 60 miles north of nashville.
I am on Levothyroxine and feel dreadful 50mg. What did you take that changed everything.
I agree, after 11 years on levothyroxine I experienced : 3 other diagnosed autoimmune conditions, still wildly flucuating TSH (unexplainable), oily skin, weight gain AND loss ( up to 20% of my body weight), heart arrythmia, early menopause (read infertility), severe cramps in my legs, body pain, muscle weakness, difficulty walking because of stiffness, oateoporosis, loss of memory, brain fog, anxiety, profuse sweating, insomnia, to name a few.....after careful consideration I have (against medical advice) completely stopped the medication . And on the fifth day, my former self returned. I am going to treat myself holistically with diet (gluten free and anti candida) and herbs (fucus/seaweed/bladderwrack) and supplements, Vit D, Selenium, Zinc, B complex, Vit c....and none of the forgoing will likely cause me the harm that levothyroxine did. First rule of thumb for an MD, do no harm, sorry, doctors, you did a LOT of harm to me....
