Is This Drug Better Than Boniva
UpdatedMy mom's doctor recently changed her to this drug. He said Bonvia wasn't any good, but her insurance will not over this drug as a cheaper tier 2 drug. The insurance copy is saying that they are "equal". Does anyone know if the active ingredients are the same?
We are also wandering if the Dr. is getting "kickback" to get patients to use this drug?

I have been diagnosed with Osteoporosis & the Doctor gave me Atelvia 35mg. I have not taken it yet because I too want to know if he is pushing it because of Kickbacks. I read under the FDA that it has only been tested for a year. I am not inclined to take something that is not tried and true.
Atelvia 35mg is a much better medication for treating osteopenia and osteoporosis than Boniva. Boniva is not very effective, it doesn't protect your hip from fracturing, and it must be taken at least an hour before breakfast with plain water only.
Atelvia 35mg weekly will protect not only your spine but your wrist and hip as well from fracturing. Also, it should be taken with your breakfast which is much more convenient.
The molecules are different and your doctor is upgrading you to a better drug.
I can't say anything regarding the kickbacks, though such a practice would be illegal.
Many doctors will prescribe or want to switch someone to a newer medication, due to better efficacy or better safety.
Boniva contains the active ingredient Ibandronate and Atelvia contains the active ingredient Risendronate, so not the same, but they are in the same drug class. That is why the insurance company considers them to be equivalent.
Since Boniva has been on the market longer, it is normal for an insurance company to prefer to cover it, because it has a more proven track record in regards to efficacy and safety.

As to which one is right for you, you should really learn the details on both and then discuss it with your doctor.
Are there any other questions or comments?
If you really don’t trust your doctor you should get a new one. Trust is a must. As for kickbacks, ask your pharmacist what he/she gets to switch you to a generic...A KICKBACK, They all get kickbacks, your doctor gets the cost of paperwork, extra staff and headache for it. Ask him/her.
Although atelviais new it is the same active ingredient as actonel (which has been on the market for DECADES) it is a proven compound. The best thing is that Atelvia can be taken with food and allows for maximum absorbancy and coverage.
Atelvia is coated so it dissolves in your intestines- not in the stomach. That means less side effects. I couldn't take Boniva because of stomach pain but I can take Atelvia. It also protects both spine and hips - some osteoporosis drugs protect only the spine.
