Absolutely! I have noticed that the 75mcg patches don't always last 72 hours, especially if I have become very heated at any time. (ie: heavy activity, night sweats, summertime heat...etc.) So many times I have to change my patch up to 12 hours earlier due to increased pain. I once asked the pharmacist about this, but he told me there is no way that a patch could lose potentcy earlier than 72 hours. He is full of crap. Once in awhile I start feeling horrible withdrawal symptoms (in addition to PAIN) before the patch is supposed to be changed.

I will take a VERY SMALL cut piece of a patch and put it between my gum/cheek to ease the pain and the withdrawal symptoms. (Maybe 1/64 of a patch) This does seem to work well when needed for extreme breakthrough pain or withdrawals (or the patch wears off and you can't stand waiting a few hours for the fresh one to kick in.)

I do not try to make myself feel high off these things, though. In fact, when I get over-heated and too much meds start going into my system, I get very flushed, nauseated and feel horrible. This drug is not meant to get a recreational high from, and can be fatal if tried. (At least in my opinion - been using patches for over a year now.) This is a very dangerous drug, but extremely helpful for those with chronic severe pain.

BIG DIFFERENCE! The people who use it to ease pain become physically dependent on it to feel as normal as possible. People who use it just to get a recreational high are ABUSING it. I'm no angel, I have abused in the past too. But Fentanyl is a whole 'nuther monster. Some people just don't know how dangerous it is until something bad happens. I've had more than one bad scare, and I've been prescribed these patches for over a year now - don't generally use more than prescribed - or not by much.

To Tommy in MN: Your idea of putting on new patch every 48 hours and keeping the old one on for the remainder of the 72 hours (thereby almost always having 2 patches on) does sound like it would work. However, in my experience, I've found that there are SOME times when the patch DOES last almost the entire 72 hours. It's not often, but does happen. It seems to me you are risking raising your tolerance level to a point where you are going to always need a higher dose to help your pain...or suffer withdrawals. Though I do agree: the patch works at it's best for the first 2 days only. After that it usually begins to taper off.

What I do is this: If my patch stops working (after about 60 hours, normally), I will put a new one on and then take the old one off. If the pain and/or withdrawal is significant, I will cut another fresh patch into 64 pieces. (Cut patch in half, then quartered, then cut the quartered part into 4 parts.) Then I will put that small 1/64th piece in between my gum & cheek to get near immediate pain relief. Many people could die from doing this much, however...so I do not recommend it unless your tolerance is very high.

I also get 15 patches prescribed per month, because I had to convince my doc that these patches just DO NOT last 72 hours! Even my pharmacist was/is ignorant to this fact. So finally I had to convince them that, because I used to be such a large person and lost 200 lbs, my skin is too loose to keep the patch on for very long. That is how I finally got my doc to prescribe me 15 per month. BUT....if I go to most any other pharmacy than my regular one, they will not fill for 15 and give me a hard time, start treating me like a criminal. I HATE THAT!!

It's a horrible stigmatism we have to live with, when people know we are physically dependent on these highly potent pain meds. Some people even look at you and doubt your pain at all, because they see how normal you seem when the patches are working like they should. I'm still trying to learn how to shrug off the way some people treat me. I am terrified to move to another state, because I fear I will not be able to get my same level of medications without starting WWIII. It's so discriminating and humiliating.

It's ok if you are done living. If you have a death wish go for it. Be serious and stop abusing yourself. Make sure you have your affairs in order . Is it ok for me to take a handful of antifreeze and cheek it???!

I honestly cannot believe that this discussion has lasted this long. I've read the replies - but didn't really need to. Of course it is NOT okay to chew a Fentanyl Patch. Fentanyl patches are to be applied to the skin only. The amount of people flagrantly abusing prescription pain medications astounds me -- these drugs are intended for people who are experiencing pain, not for someone to catch a buzz. It's no wonder fewer and fewer MDs are willing to prescribe medications to relieve pain. Those who are just after a buzz are basically making life very difficult for folks in legitimate pain.

If your patches are not lasting the 72 hours and you wear more than one, talk to your Dr about staggering them. I wear a 100 and two 25 patches so I can stagger them.

As far as wearing patches and them wearing off due to excessive heat, our bodies are all different so we all react different. Any extra heat will cause the medication to be released from the patch much quicker. That is why the warning on the instruction sheet.

Someone.... You are looking for another site. We are not supporting Fentanyl abuse, and are a harm reduction site. You will find PLENTY OF ABUSE advice on that site, this is not the correct forum for your posts. No offense, but you can find like minded people and acceptance of your methods there, also heroin etc on the site. Peace to you in your journeys, and godspeed friend....

Stupid people asking stupid questions. Then stupid people answering the stupid quuestions.

Can you make yourself feel high off H (sure)
Can you die from H (sure)
Can you chew fentanyl (sure)
Can you die from fentanyl (sure)

I know people who would pick up any pill laying in the dirt in the street and insufflate it and hope it was something good. What it ultimately does is make the fda crack down on pharmacies. Making it next to impossiblle for regular people to get their meds filled. Cause the pharmacies now automaticaly think people are skeezers. I can not tell you the headaches I have getting my fentanyl filled. The pharmacy was actualy in the hospital/drs office. They made me sign an agreement ro only get my meds there and they never have rhem and I cannot go somewhere else.

Wanna feel high? I mean super high? I hurt if you put a loaded gun up your nose and pull the trigger. The residual blood and brain matter mized with the gun powder really gets you off and you'll never need any other drug ever again. Of course there's a possible overdose problem. But hey I think you'll be ok. Oh and you can chew on your tounge for a few minutes before you pass away.

(This info has not been approved by the fda and is not designed to cure or treat any desease) except curing america of savages.

OK, on this topic I'd like to say that as dangerous as it can be, what would the alternative be for someone truly suffering from a chronic pain the like of which no pain medicine has ever truly been able to stop? I find myself in a hard place and trying these words is so hard because I'm shaking with agony and supposedly dying from a secondary infection anyway, but the point is the hospitals could never get my pain under control when I occasionally submit to going to the Ed, and my pain doctor feels I'm on enough medicine, despite my frequent breakthroughs that leave me paralyzed with a pain I never believed existed, it seems so long as these doctors don't feel it then it obviously doesn't exist, yet for nearly 6 years I've been trying to get this pain to stop, and although I've finally found a medicine that does help, I'm not prescribed enough of it to last through the month. Which leaves me where I am today, 5 days away from my next dose, and in absolute anguish from the pain. So I give up and thinking of trying this today to try to stop this pain!

Please just be careful, Franklin. I know you need more for pain than they give you, but chewing is a whole 'nuther monster. On occasion, I will take only 1/32 to 1/64th of a piece and put between my gums for "breakthrough pain" when what they prescribe isn't enough. Do you at least get 3 boxes per month instead of only 2? That gives you room to alleviate your pain better. There are some suggestions here, but all are dangerous if not done with extreme care. If your doc is like mine and you can't seem to get thru to him that what he prescribes just isn't quite enough....and they don't believe you when you tell them that the patch rarely lasts as long as 72 hours (all they have to do is read the insert to know you aren't lying)....then carefully resort to the suggestions here.

WOW! I read almost every reply and all but maybe ten were not worth the time it took to write them. I Have a Masters Degree in Social Science and have worked with addics for twenty years from prisoners that could care less to the upmost religious God fearing kind that can not stand being addiics. I myself have struggled in the past but it was not worth the pain I caused myself or others to continue. To the addict that asked the question: I do not judge you at all I would bet the farm you are the type that gets your pain meds and are out of a months supply in a week and find the rest off the street when your out hoping to God you can avoid the come down. Not my problem but I hope you get help or stop and use your pain meds correctly, I guarantee your life will be better. Anywho, the fact is cut the patch in quarters or less depending on the dose do not swallow chew softly and keep in mouth for at least an hour then dispose. Try in small sizes first then move ahead as wanted. No you will not die because I feel you take enough pills that you are fine. If you have no experience with pain meds and are playing with the idea, do not do it- period. Enjoy your high but I know from experience you will run out of drugs no matter how much money you have and you will have to come down, have fun with that.

No insult, BUT ARE YOU INSANE?!
1. DO NOT chew or eat a fentanyl transdermal patch unless you want your bio in the OBITS! IT can and might and STOPPED EVEN LONG TIME USER'S HEART, That small patch is meant and will last for 48 hours!
2. NEVER cut in half, as it can and will leak out, and just might produce same result as in 1.
3. IF you are NOT opioid dependent, even if you TOUCH a PATCH, IT CAN STOP you HEART! The inserts STRESS THiS VERY CLEARLY!

NEVER,NEVER,EVER cut a fentanyl patch, this can cause respiratory arrest, and it is life threatening.I use the fentanyl patch 100m and it is to be placed on the body in a clean area.if needed use alcohol to wipe area of any powder or lotion to avoid it coming loose.when applied, hold it on site 30 seconds,it will hold itself, however should it come loose, ask your doctor to prescribe Tegaderm.a clear film like self adhesive(like a nurse would put over an IV site in the hospital. The patch is worn for 3days ,so at the end of the use fold it in half, flush it, don't let anyone, including a pet touch it (there may be residue on it) Pain patients are losing the ability to get legitimate treatment when people abuse medicine by misusing medicine and other people have actually accidentally killed themselves by experimental behavior. When first used,if you've never used an opiate before in treatment you always should be started on the lowest dose- Fentanyl patch comes in 25,50,75,100 /and depending on which company makes it also will be a factor in the delivery of medicine and proper adhesive issues. NEVER,NEVER,NEVER CUT IT AND NEVER CHEW IT OR SHARE .

Both ,Kinds of Professional........Masters degree with your diction and choice of verbage, U feel completely confident in saying, you are no professional even once or you would practice HARM REDUCTION. YOU MIGHT want to stop using your name and replace it with POSER. I did for many. years what you describe ( poorly) as my career, specializing in inmate population. Above all DO NO HARM, did you manage to take an ethics class while obtaining your Masters Degree???!! Can you enlighten us with your title? It is more than obvious that you have a serious problem if you feel it's a good idea to give the OP directions on abusing something so dangerous as using fentanyl improperly...... you're sadly mistaken if you feel this advice was warranted.

A while back I mentioned how it should be ok to cut a patch to 1/32 and chew on that very small piece in the event you are hurting really bad and your doc doesn't prescribe you adequate breakthrough pain relief. I was wrong. Even I, having been using this for a few years now, had a few scary incidents recently. And even though it was a piece of a USED patch that was taken off after 48 hours, I still had some serious problems for a few hours that scared the hell outta me. I took my patch off and spit out the piece I had in my mouth. Then I ate something and went to lie down on the couch. I think I was very lucky that time. DO NOT DO THIS!!!
