Ibuprofen, Acetaminophen, And Tylenol
UpdatedCan someone please explain the difference between Ibuprofen, Acetaminophen, and Tylenol? I’m already maxed out on maximum Ibuprofen at 1600 mg a day spread out 4xs a day and a (really low dose of Gabapentin 200 mg 3xs a day) for forearm pain. The Ibuprofen isn’t enough when the pain hits hard and fast despite having a high tolerance for pain.

Acetaminophen (also known as paracetamol or APAP) is the same thing as Tylenol. Tylenol is just the retail "brand" name. It is not an NSAID. It can be hard on your liver but typically won't cause ulcers or bleeding.
Ibuprofen (brand name Advil) IS an NSAID which can increase your risk of bleeding, raise blood pressure and increase the chance of cardiovascular ailments.
Tylenol and Ibuprofen are safe to take together and can be quite effective that way. Doubling up on acetaminophen is a bad idea. This could lead to hepatotoxicity (liver damage or failure).
1600 mg a day of Ibuprofen is a lot to be taking on a daily basis. At that rate you are likely going to run into some cardiovascular, kidney, ulcer, and bleeding problems.
Ibuprofen is a nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory that is used to treat pain, fever, and swelling. It is best known to many people as being the active ingredient in Advil.
Acetaminophen is the active ingredient in Tylenol, so they are the same thing. It is commonly used to treat headaches, and fever. If you take more than 3,000mgs a day, there is a risk of experiencing Acetaminophen toxicity, which can be fatal.
The FDA lists the side effects of both as possibly including nausea, dizziness, headache, and stomach irritation.
What is causing the pain in your forearm? Have any tests been done to discover the cause?
Re: Verwon (# 2)
Just recovering from a forearm injury 4 months ago (preventable accident). My doctor has really high expectations and tries to keep the pain medication at the minimum, even though it’s actually helping a lot with as little side affects as possible.
Re: Mason (# 1)
I gave no problems at all and been on this dose of Ibuprofen for 3 months. It’s when I get past this amount when I had problems (only with doctor okaying it for 1.5 weeks tops).
My 20-year-old son had an allergic reaction to paracetamol and ibuprofen. What medicine can you recommend for him for treating a fever and headache separately?
