Ibuprofen 800mg Tabs

Are Ibuprofen 800mg (IP 466) tabs, made by Amneal Pharmaceuticals, prescription only, or can they be bought over-the-counter? I've had several disc herniations for almost 20yrs.Tired of the stigma associated with pain meds, I went off the stronger meds (such as Oxycontin) approximately 2 yrs ago. I've tried large doses of Motrin, which was getting expensive, and eventually tried the Ibuprofen 800mg tabs. They've worked for me (1 tab twice daily) but I'm almost out and would like to use them regularly. They're a lot less expensive than Motrin or other brand names. Please, advice? Thanks!

Hello, NeedAdvice! How are you?

That dosage is only available by prescription. The reason for that is due to the fact that there are some risks associated with long-term use of high dosages of NSAIDs, such as stomach ulceration, liver damage or failure, increased risk of bleeding, elevated blood pressure, fluid retention and congestive heart failure.

That's why the maximum dosage available over the counter in the U.S. is only 200mgs.

There is no difference, though so if your doctor okays you to stay on it, you can just take several of the over the counter tablets, but only your doctor can let you know on that.

Is there anything else I can help with?
