The answer to your question is no. Although these are two completely different medications, they are often sold in combination with one another to form a stronger pain medication. Prescription ibuprofen is used to relieve "mild to moderate pain", while some hydrocodone products are used to relieve "moderate to severe pain". Other hydrocodone products are used to relieve cough.
Additionally, Ibuprofen is in a class of medications called NSAIDs. It works by stopping the body's production of a substance that causes pain, fever, and inflammation.
Hydrocodone is in a class of medications called opiate (narcotic) analgesics and in a class of medications called antitussives. Hydrocodone relieves pain by changing the way the brain and nervous system respond to pain. Hydrocodone relieves cough by decreasing activity in the part of the brain that causes coughing.

Actually, even though you are right about hydrocodone being an opiate, it is considered a CIII substance, which is not a narcotic. Oxycodone, most commonly found in generic Percocet is a CII/narcotic and is also an opiate. As an RPhD I spent almost 1/3 of my life in school learning little nuances like this one. Oxycodone is the actual drug that is in a medication that has become quite popular amongst the junkies in my area called, you guessed it, Oxycontin. I could jump on my soapbox about how much I hate OC but that's for another thread. I just wanted to clear up that hydrocodone is not actually a narcotic even though it is an opiate and a controlled substance.
@RPhDPIC2009,
Regarding Hydrocodone's drug class, call me a liar, but according to nih.gov, Hydrocodone in and of itself, is in a class of medications called opiate (narcotic) analgesics and in a class of medications called antitussives.
You can see for yourself here: nlm.nih.gov/medlineplus/druginfo/meds/a601006.html
A number of other reputable webpages also consider Hydrocodone to be a narcotic pain reliever. So while I don't know which textbook you found that information claiming that Hydrocodone is not a narcotic, I do understand that there are many discrepancies between information found online versus that taught in school. However, government websites tend to be most accurate from my own experience.
Hope this helps!
