Hydrochlorothiazide Side Effects
(Newest replies first)
Updated
I'm taking Hydrochlorothiazide for water retention due to a side effect from high estrogen levels in my birth control. I take 25 mg every morning, and haven't been able to sleep at all in the past three nights. I've looked it up online and haven't found anywhere saying that it causes loss of sleep. Is that a side effect of hydrochlorothiazide or is there just something else wrong with me? Because I haven't changed any other medications, or habits since then. It's the only thing I can think of that's causing this.

I am no doctor but I will say that I have read that having higher estrogen levels can cause a disruption in your sleep. Did this start before or after you began taking Hydrochorothiazide? Sometimes things can come on around the same time as we start medication making us automatically think it could be the medication. I know that has been my case.
Well I am getting ready to start my Linsinopril/Hydrochorothiazide which is a mixture of a water pill (HCTZ) and Linsinopril for the heart. Any one have any good results from this pill? Also what are some of the side effects anyone has experience?
Hi, can I take hydrochlorothiazide while on nordette birth control pills?
Hi Hannah,
There are actually quite a few side effects listed that, in my opinion, could indirectly result in loss of sleep/insomnia-related symptoms. Posted below is a list of side effects for you to check out:
Hypokalemia, an occasional side effect, can be usually prevented by potassium supplements or by combining hydrochlorothiazide with a potassium-sparing diuretic.
Hypomagnesemia
Hyponatremia
Hyperuricemia and gout
High blood sugar
Hyperlipidemia
Hypercalcemia
Headache
Nausea/vomiting
Photosensitivity
Weight gain
Gout
Pancreatitis
muscle weakness
dizziness
cramps
thirst
stomach pain
diarrhea
loss of appetite
hair loss
sore throat with fever
unusual bleeding or bruising
severe skin rash with peeling skin
difficulty breathing or swallowing

To help answer your question though, I do believe Hydrochlorothiazide is the root cause of your sleepless nights. More-over because you mentioned that you're not taking anything else and haven't experienced this specific condition before. Have you gone any length of time without taking this medication, to re-assess how you feel?
I hope this info helps!
