How Long Before I Take Second Suboxone (Top voted first)

Updated

Am trying to kick heroin. Took half of an 8mg suboxone after experiencing 18 hrs of withdrawals. That did the trick. It has now been 13 hrs since I took the fist dose. Am now wondering how long do I wait before I take a second dose of suboxone? Will I need to wait until I go through withdrawals again or what? A speedy reply will be greatly appreciated.

I've been smoking heroin every day multiple times a day for the last 4 months. I've been using probably close to a gram a day and need to get clean because I'm going to be on probation starting June 5th and will be drug tested that day in court. The last time I used was about 20 hrs ago. I got an 8 mg suboxone strip from a friend and want to know if one strip will work to taper me off and not have any withdrawl symptoms? I cut the strip into 4's (quarters) and took one about an hour ago. Can I take one again before bed? In about 4 hrs? And should I cut up the other 2 quarters into smaller pieces to last me longer? Please help me with this, I'm very new to suboxone (I've been reading online but it hasn't helped all that much) your responses will be greatly appreciated! Thank you!

OK so after 10 years of being on Norco and Perks due to a back injury I decided to break away from this horrible grip of pain meds! I took my last 2 oxys at 4pm waited till 5am to take my first 8mg soboxine, I was scared that it would spin my withdraws out of control.....I was fine!! No withdraws at all!! I was taking 8-9 Norco 10-325 and up to 4 perks a day for many years!! Soboxine is amazing.

I agree that you should take the next one now. But here's something to consider -- if you're taking pills (dissolving them under your tongue), they take about an hour or so to kick in, so if you are still experiencing symptoms after an hour of taking it, take a little more (another 2mg). If you're taking the strips, they'll kick in faster (about half the time), so again, if at that point you need more, take a little more. Since you're just starting, you'll be "experimenting" with your dosage w/in these next few days to find out how much you need (and how often) to take away your w/drawal symptoms. You may want to consider keeping a little journal about when and how much you're taking, and then the results (i.e. "still felt symptoms" or "it made me really tired", etc.) Are you doing this through a dr. or on your own? If you have a dr., bring the journal to your next appt and he/she will have a better understanding of your specific needs. Either way -- good luck and don't give up!!! It's not gonna be easy, but it's do-able -- and really worth it.

Took it 12 hours after my last dose and NO issues at all so everyone is different-and everyone that I KNOW has taken 12 hrs. That is the happy medium.

you can take it right now! I'm surprised that 1/2 a pill stopped withdrawal from herion, you're lucky. My doctor & other people I've talked to were told to take enough to make the withdrawal symtoms stop, when you feel them start up again, take another suboxoxne. I've been on it about 2 years and it's been a miracle. I was on the lortab merry go round, bad. Good luck! It takes 2 8mg tabs a day to stop cravings per my Dr. & she said she was told that by the drug people. Just hang in there, be careful if you drive, the sub cause's nodding off at the beginning.

Hi, I just wanted to know how your recovery has been or I guess if it worked? I'm scared to death of starting another medication but I take up to 30 Norcos and 20 Trams a day. I'm going to die or go to jail soon. Did the suboxone really help?

8 MG TWICE DAILY IS THE WAY TO GO AT FIRST. ONCE COMFORTABLE, YOU CAN START TO WEAN BUT IT TAKES AWHILE. PLEASE...GET IT LEGALLY!!!!

You can cut the strips... I am being prescribed 2mg a day from a doctor from University of Florida Shands. There prescribe the 8mg strips and I cut them in four, have been for months. NO ISSUES. The prescription is cheaper this way. All the medication is released when it DISSOLVES under the tongue, not when its cut. Also this medication has a long half life. Beginning prescription is usually 2mg twice a day. If after 24-36 hours and you don't fill "normal" you can increase. Take too much and it can make you sick... I did once and was throwing up and nauseous the whole day. GOOD LUCK PEOPLE. Also GOTO an AA or NA meeting too.... most of us abuse medication because we don't feel right or fit in without it. Research has shown that people generally take drugs to either feel good (i.e., sensation seekers or anyone wanting to experiment with feeling high or different) or to feel better (i.e., self-medicators or individuals who take drugs in an attempt to cope with difficult problems or situations, including stress, trauma, and symptoms of mental disorders).

Yeah totally agree with you, suboxone will sort the physical but the mental part, which is much harder than the physical,is actually the issue we've to deal with,AA NA or CA can b a gr8 help, yeah there'll b sum who will say total abstinence r nothing and others who may judge u but a real clean addict who remembers where they came from, will welcome you and let you know that ur not alone, and maybe when we're ready will also achieve total abstinence,so anyone out there trying to get clean but struggling I am with you, doing the same, in d hope I will make it out of the daily torture I am currently putting myself through, let alone my family. B-) a big thumbs up to anyone in addiction,we are not alone! Went on a bit there, soz.

Hopefully I can clear up some confusion for people. This is based on a combination of personal experience and knowledge from reading the actual information that comes with Suboxone (so few read the form inside) and talking with my doctor.

Also if you would prefer to withdraw at home without Suboxone you can look up the THOMAS RECIPE which is a method using OTC vitamins and drugs to cancel out withdraw symptoms.

WHEN TO TAKE FIRST DOSE -

You need to be ranking at a 5 to 6 on the COWS (Clinical Opiate Withdrawal Scale). Google the scale. It will tell you where you are at based on the withdraw symptoms you are experiencing. This can be more accurate then going off of time since everyone withdraws at different rates based on the type of opiate they used, body weight, tolerance, etc.

You NEED to wait 12-24 hours after taking your LAST dose of any FAST ACTING opiate BEFORE taking Suboxone. Fast acting opiates are oxycodone (roxicodone and percocet), hydrocodone (Vicodin), codeine (Tylenol 3), heroin, morphine, etc. LONG ACTING OPIATE are: methadone, buprenorphine (aka Suboxone), time released Oxycontin and Fentanyl. *I didn't name ALL the short and long-term opiates, those are just the most popular. IF TAKING LONG LASTING OPIATES you MUST WAIT at least 36-48 hours before taking Suboxone to allow it to leave you system first.

Suboxone contains Naloxone which removes and then blocks all opiates currently on your brain receptors. If you have not allowed your body sufficient time to remove these opiates then the Naloxone will block too many receptors preventing the Buprenorphine from attaching itself. This is called Precipitated withdrawal. If you fall in Precipitated withdrawal there is NOTHING you can do but wait it out as no amount of opiates or Suboxone will be able to attach to your receptors.

HOW TO GET SUBOXONE-

GO TO A DOCTOR! You can go to the Suboxone website to find one. Most insurances WON'T COVER the visit and it usually cost $250. Most insurance WILL COVER the prescription and there are coupons on their website. Tell him/her the truth and how much and when you used. They will start you on the right dose and you will have to come back every 2-4 weeks. You'll have to take a urine test to make sure you are not abusing any other drugs and are taking the Suboxone. Usually follow up visits cost $100. This is surly cheaper then what we spent on drug dealers in the long term.

EFFECTS OF SUBOXONE-

I had tapered myself down from 60mg of Roxicodone and Heroin each day to 20-40 mg of Oxycodone a day before taking Suboxone. I took my last dose at 6pm, went through a tough night then took my first dose of Suboxone at 2:30pm the following day (20 hours later). I was prescribed 8mg strips, 4mg in the morning and 4mg at night. I'm male and weigh 165lbs. Hopefully that gives you a range of time and dosage needed if you feel it necessary to take this off the street and do it on your own (not recommended!).

Taken subliminally (strips under the tongue) it will take 15-30 min before withdrawal symptoms disappear. 60-90 minutes after initial dose you will reach the peak and feel high energy with NO WITHDRAW SYMPTOMS. 90-120 minutes later you will even out and feel normal. Not high and not sick. If you still feel sick then most likely you took too low of a dose. According to my Doctor and the Suboxone instructions you can take an additional 2mg every 2 hours until withdraw symptoms subside.

Usually your doctor will tell you to take one dose in the morning then another at night before you go to sleep. Remember Suboxone is LONG LASTING. That's the magic of it so you don't need to constantly go through the insanity of getting high every couple of hours so not to be sick.

Tell you doctor you want to taper off. They will usually put you on a 1-2 month maintenance dose to find what works for you and allow you to get use to feeling normal again. It also removes the psychological urge for that "rush". The 3rd month they will begin to taper you off to a low enough dose that you can "jump off". The jump off will still have very manageable withdraw symptoms. There is no magical way to skip this. It just becomes a hundred times easier when working with a doctor. DO NOT try this on your own. Suboxone is much more addicting and stays in your system longer then most abused opiates do. As a result if you get hooked on it you will have worse withdraws that last longer.

I can not stress enough that Suboxone takes TIME to absorb. I know we are use to a rush but that is not how it works. You need to wait 2 hours before taking more (2mg). Otherwise you risk taking to much and getting sick or even worse throwing yourself into a harder Precipitated Withdraw if you didn't wait long enough after your last opiate dose.

FINALLY-

DO NOT become one of those people who go on Suboxone for years. It's just the same trap as drug abuse and will make it even harder to come off the Suboxone. The whole point of the drug is to give you time to get your affairs in order and release yourself from the psychological urges for that instant rush and getting high. When taken correctly Suboxone should make you feel normal and prepare to take a few days off to go through the much lighter Suboxone withdraw once you have been tapered down.

If you read this far you are now more educated then 95% of people who are misinformed people misinforming people.

Thanks all for your timely response(s). I originally took half a Suboxone - maybe even less - and after reading your replies I took some more, but just a little tiny bit because I have read that I could get strung out on the Suboxone if I took them on a more or less limited, but regular basis.

After having taken the first 4mg dose I felt nothing, so I decided to shower in the hopes that the hot water would help me somehow. Was in the shower for a really long time. But when I came out I was feeling fine. Was even able to get some sleep. After about 13 hours I began feeling muscle/back aches but no other w/drawal symptoms.. I'm both surprised and truly greatful that it has all resulted in being as easy as it has been, thus far. I took an even smaller piece - 1/2 1st day, about 2mg 2nd day - maybe 1 or possibly .5mg on the 3rd day and am now waiting to see what if anything I will feel next.

Am doing this on my own. Had 3 Suboxone when I started and have about 2 1/4, at least, left over. However, I keep hearing people saying to be very careful with their use because Suboxone are highly addictive. Approximately how long must one be using them before one gets addicted to them?

This time around, I had been on heroin for a little less than 1 year. Had been clean for 8 years before idiotically getting strung out again. Prior to my 8yr hiatus, I'd been strung out on heroin for approx. 30 yrs. The last time I kicked I was in jail and, of course, kicked cold turkey. I went through withdrawals for 10 days. While doing so, I continuously dreamt that I was fixing and would wake up to reality and be so pissed. Was so sick that on the 2nd day they took me from jail to the hospital to keep an eye on me. I've discovered that the longer I was using, that longer the withdrawal period would be. At first just 3 days, then 4, 5, 6.....until that last 10 day period. So I am not quite sure how long it will take this time. Which is why I am so concerned about possibly getting addicted to the Suboxone. From what I've read in the threads here, the Suboxone withdrawals can be even worst than Methadone withdrawals. And those were frighteningly horrendous.

But hey! Again, thanks heaps to everyone for your informed assistance.

Hey Courty,
Suboxone does help but ya gotta remember that they are addicting. The best way to do it is to go to suboxone doctor and get it thru his head that you only want to be on them for 3 months tops. Work out a taper plan with him. Stick to plan. Good luck.
