I think the medication in question was actually what's referred to as HCTZ, or Hydrochlorothiazide.

This medication is a diuretic that helps remove excess fluid and sodium from the body, it is most commonly used to treat high blood pressure, congestive heart failure and edema.

However, by this very same mechanism, it can also reduce potassium levels, because the removal of fluid can affect all electrolytes in the body.
