Getting Prescriptions From 2 Different Doctors For Pain Meds But There Are Conditions (Page 3) (Top voted first)

Updated

Well I just really need to know if what I am doing is considered doctor shopping. I fell at at department store and injured my knee. Now I have to go to the doctor the lawyer sent me to. He prescribes pain meds for me but the only thing he can treat is my knee. I started having back problems. My primary care doctor sent me to a different doctor and he also gives me meds. But the pharmacy said they would call the doctors and tell on me. So I went and ahead and told the doctors myself so that it would not look as bad. What do you think will happen to me? The pharmacy refused to give me back my prescription. Can they do that?

Pharmacies are cracking down. I would think the pain medication prescribed for your knee pain would also help with the other pain. It is a pain medication after all. Maybe the 2 Dr's need to consult with each other and adjust the strength that you need and provide one prescription that would help you.

It is if you don't tell him everything. This new law has made being in pain painful. I personally wouldn't get meds from 2 Docs. But if I did I'd use a different name address and SS number. Then I'd have to get a new fake Drivers License. More trouble than its worth. Like I said in another post. The Government has their nose to far up our ass!

Patricia, you should not have been treated for pain by two different doctors.

You were prescribed two immediate release opiates. Precocet 10 is an immediate release pain med and can be take a often as every 4 hours. Norco is an immedicate pain med and can be taken as often as every four hours. Break through meds are for when a patient is taking an extended release pain meds.

I have no idea why your primary told you to take the percocet once every 8 hours, unless he didn't think you pain was constant. I also have no idea why your ortho prescribed you Norco to take with the percocet. It is not the responsibility of your ortho dr, or any other dr, to check with your primary and be sure it is alright if you take another pain med along with the percocet the primary prescribed. You will find it difficult, if not impossible to find another doctor to write your pain meds because it appears you are doctor shopping.

Debbie, your primary can prescribe you pain meds, if he wants to. But, that does not mean that you are not breaking your Pain Contract with your pain dr. You should have called your pain dr if your pain was so bad the meds you were prescribed by him were not helping. Going to your primary for additional pain meds makes it appear that you are abusing your pain meds and doctor shopping. It is highly doubtful you will be able to find a doctor that will write your pain meds.

When a patient receives pain meds from one doctor and/or has signed a pain contract, it is up to the patient to follow the pain contract or the doctors rules. It is not up to any other doctor to ensure you do what you have agreed to do by signing the pain contract.

Why do people that have no clue what they are talking about answer people questions on message boards? NO one needs you to tell them to not do drugs or don't doctor shop. You can go to as many Doctors as you want and get medication from all of them. It is only doctor shopping if you get a controlled substance from more then 1 doctor and lie about it. If your pain management doctor writes you 120 blues (30mg) every month and your primary or dentist writes you something else for pain it is okay as long as they both know about it and are both fine with it.
As for the person that was talking about refilling your valium after your pain management doctor told you you had to pick one doctor and stay with him. I would say that is not going to get you arrested but it will get you discharged from both doctors. And is VALIUM worth that? Here in Florida VALIUM is like Tylenol. If your going to get discharged at least get some Xanax.

If you go to one doctor and he prescribes
opiates... and then see another for a different condition without telling him you're already on something else... that's doctor shopping.

Just an FYI for "drshoopingpro" - Maryland has had a PDMP system in place, one of the best, since 2013. Entries go all the way back to January 2013 so you're mistaken. 49 states have a system in place and yes, many are connected with bordering states as they should be.

Smtibtiwin, Call the drs office and ask the nurse. And hope they make a note of it in your medical records. And do what they tell you to do.

I would like to reply to the person who saw a different dr. He saw a different dr. but in the same pain clinic. This is one reason I personally ask to see the same person every 28 days because they're policy is that you see a provider who is available unless you ask specifically for a certain provider. I believe they have at least 3 pain management providers, maybe 4 and it's true that each one may treat you differently...........I think this is what I understood from the person who wrote that the second dr. was from the same clinic said "let's try percocet" or whatever it was but the regular dr. wanted to stick with norco..............this can be very confusing. If I were the patient I would ask to see the dr. who was willing to try something different when the patient complained that norco wasn't working for him.........

That's 100% incorrect, EVERY state has dr.shopping laws. They all have a P.M.P., only some states don't have access to other states data bases. But for the most part they are all linked together. Any time you fill a narcotic that is deemed as having abuse potential, the pharmacies must enter it into the data base with in 7 days? And it's recorded by the DEA. DR shopping is no longer possible and is definitely not with the risk anymore. 25 years is what you can get for dr shopping, because they can also charge you with disturbing in some cases.

I would be very cautious with this idea. Just reading it sounds like you are seeking more drugs, which you are as you admitted that you were addicted to 7 a day and reduced to 3 a day. 1st- that's a drastic reduction and these types of drugs should not be reduced so abruptly. 2nd- anything could happen from seizures to all types of withdrawal symptoms. 3rd- It sounds like the dr. assumed that you were taking them to feel high because otherwise, he/she should know better. If you do get withdrawal symptoms, keep a journal and especially if you have a seizure..............This might possibly allow a legal case on your part against your dr. for reducing your meds too quickly without giving your body enough time to adjust to the dose change. There is something not right with this story and it's either coming from you or it's coming from the doctor. I wish you the best in the final outcome and hope this transition is not too difficult for you..............And again: be cautious. Going to other drs. to attempt to get the desired once gotten effect could put you in jail for a very long time. Let us know how everything works out if you would like. I know that I would be interested. :)

It is used to treat opiate addiction, so your pain Dr may not want to rx you anymore pain meds.

Once you went to the PM doctor he was to take over all your mother care as far her pain is concern. Why did you decide to fill the prescription when other meds were prescribe for her? Once you took the prescriptions from the PM that is the only medication that should be filled NO MATTER how long the other prescription was written. You can certainly talk to the PM doctor but I doubt he will let your mother back into his practice. Hopefully your mother will not suffer while you try to explain your mistake as you try to find a doctor who will prescribe opiate medication to your mom in the future. In todays world getting and filling pain medication from 2 different doctors without them both knowing about it is considered doctor shopping. You screwed up big time.

A new Dr will get copies of your Mom's medical records from her last pain Dr. Writing the letter may or may not get to the Dr. But what you can do is send it Restricted Delivery. You have to pay for that and there is no guarantee he will actually read the letter but he will have to sign for it himself and not just someone in the office.

I don't know if these posts are going in order but this is directed to keiki mostly but its an update most unusual. not sure cant see that my last post went through before internet went down here. so at last I was anxiously awaiting a response from the good ole doc to see if he was going to let my mom back in. Sadly, I must report, he did not. the last response I got was "Apparently Susan asked if you had gotten a prescription from someone else and was told no. Apparently this was not true. We can't have patients here that don't tell the truth. I'm not sure what you want me to do." ok so Susan was apparently the pa who we saw for the 2week adjustment, it had not even occurred to me that shed even asked that question because in my mind, I was handed that previous prescription even before I had met this good ole doc, you have consider that im two 3 months into just finding a pain clinic and two weeks with this doc for mom. so im not saying this is a technicality, this is two distinct and separate things to me. a doctor handing me prescription ,the last one in fact. we parted ways and the next month we got in early to see the pain mgt guy. I then filled it after he had given me a script to be safe. not being far into the game, the way the question is asked, this is a perfectly reasonable explaination, documentation to support this was provided so surely the good doc would see it for what was, but no, I never got a response after that. and heres the twist, this afternoon, I got a letter in the mail, the one that the old doc was supposed to fax the pain doc, and all this time the pain doc never mentioned that he didn't get a fax, so yeah, clearly this one didn't care, I don't know why, I kept feeling I was missing something and that completed the puzzle, I thought this doc responding to me via personal email was on the up and up who knows, maybe it wasn't easy enough for him but he doesn't know me and my mom. he doesn't owe me anything, I was livid for a while but strangely no more, you see, I did everything I knew I could do to make this right and to no avail. and isn't timing a you know what? getting that letter today that shoulda been faxed was perfect because not only did I do my very best, but we know with 100 % certainty that this doc was actually not good enough for my mom! so oddly enough, I am freed, my Mom, I love her, she saw what this was doing to me and tries to act like shes not hurting. wait, I guess I do get a happy story after all, Stanford Medical Center Called, you may have heard of them, they have quite the cafeteria! lol, anyway, the np whos prescription mixed with my stupidity that got me in trouble did see this for what it was, took pity on us and redid the referral and sent it in house. I am happy to report that two days from now we will have a drive, meet with a new patient coordinator, turn in all the paperwork weve been doing and meet our new doctor. so unless it goes bad, which knowing it could very well. I doubt that we are going to have any problems. You see we know from my moms experience that stanfords cafeteria isn't the only thing that rocks, after my moms extensive surgery and the day after, I saw the doc come in and started to step away from them as he came up to the nurses he grabbed me and said oh no, here we consider the caregiver one of our most valuable resources. That NP whos prescription I shouldn't have filled didn't have to do this, she didn't have to send me that letter. she doesn't care, right? I beg too differ, so thank you Keiki again, I will be fighting the good fight, may youre struggles and pain be minimal but mostly thanks for the belief and inspiration, I couldn't imagnine trying to do this with the chronic pain you all suffer. it scares me because I don't see this getting any better, unless you know a loved one with chronic pain or are the person with it. most will never understand the real struggle you go through. whats that saying .....when one door closes.....................................
