Getting Prescriptions From 2 Different Doctors For Pain Meds But There Are Conditions (Page 21)
UpdatedWell I just really need to know if what I am doing is considered doctor shopping. I fell at at department store and injured my knee. Now I have to go to the doctor the lawyer sent me to. He prescribes pain meds for me but the only thing he can treat is my knee. I started having back problems. My primary care doctor sent me to a different doctor and he also gives me meds. But the pharmacy said they would call the doctors and tell on me. So I went and ahead and told the doctors myself so that it would not look as bad. What do you think will happen to me? The pharmacy refused to give me back my prescription. Can they do that?
Jack, let us know how things work out for you. Are you in the states? I'm just so curious because of the state's pharmacy databases where drs & pharmacies are keen to check that you're not getting controlled substance from more than one doc.
you need to get control of your medications. Only you know if you're using the medication for recitation, pain or a combination of both. If its for recitation. You can get on a maintenance program by admitting you are depend physically & psychological aka addicted. No judgments here. Please get help either way.If you pain is greater than what any one doctor has perscribed then you need to tell the doctor of choice (one doctor only for pain medication. ) it will catch up with you its not if but when. If you can do with out the pain medication for pain and you want control of your life back reduce your dosage of meds by 10 percent every 3 to 6 days you can do it faster by droping your dosage 10 percent every day. Its better to get help than be blind sided when a doctor or more likely all 3 say sorry I can no longer prescribe for you or have one rapidly reduce your dosage. Its better to have control of your body and mind .No matter how well meaning the doctor its better to take care of you opiate use of yourself. I hope this help's. There are several options. Be well.C Chat
Very good advice from Cate. Read carefully! One thing's for sure & that is; your Dr can & will drop you like a hot potato as soon as he's told you've been busted filling or trying to fill multiple scripts written by multiple docs.
If both drs are in the same office or practice and one prescription is for a different medication there is no law against changing one narcotic prescription in favor of another. You can fill the first prescription than change to a second medication per doctors order just don't do it in reverse. Anyone who doesn't need pain medication who is using it to get high, giving it,selling it or leaving it in a medicine cabinet so some fool can od on it is hurting people like me who suffer 24/ 7 PLEASE DON'T! ! ! ! We need this to live no joke. Its bad enough to have multiple disease processes causing unbearable pain when doctors say I have no doubt you're suffering horrible pain but the CDC says 120mg total in 24hours is the maximum we can perscribe. Sort of a one size fits all for pain they were prescribing 400mg ms /24 along with 30mg oxycontin, 10mg valium, along with many others. Some diseases are off the chart painful. So please don't abuse.
Cate , CDC Guidelines say 90 mg. The FDA Guidelines say 120, but that was a few yrs ago.
I live the next county over from you. If you haven't been cut yet by both drs, you will. Your insurance company is going to end up billing you for the visits. And in PA, the drs just have to run your name and can see everything you have been getting filled insurance or cash.
I filled a script from my old Dr. but i am not going back to him anymore I told him that was my last visit. I got a new Dr. a few days after quitting my old Dr. and he wrote me the same prescription and I have my follow up in two weeks. Will that mess me up if I feel my new script as well. As long as I'm not going to my old Dr. again???
Johnny Smith, Your Dr and most definitely your pharmacist will check the data base of all controlled substances you've filled before they write or fill a script for you. They're checking that you're not trying to fill too early or that you're trying to fill 2 scripts in one month. I hope that makes sense.
Johnny, So, as long as you're not filling too early or lying to your new Dr then you're good. I might be a tad confused about your question.
Most likely they won't let U fill the script from UR new doctor at the pharmacy till its been a month since the last one was filled if it's the same med n dosage. I woukdnt try to full the new script early.
Thanks, Nancy! For conveying what I was trying to but couldn't seem to get the thoughts or words together to do it. Hormonal probably. Me, that is.
That will depend on the new doctor.and the question while he was writing out the prescription did you tell him that you just got some opiate medications filled. If yes then you are fine. If no and you filled the script and took the pills from both script he could drop you. If you still have the pills from the other doctors don't use them so you can show the doctor that you did not take them after he prescribed you a different medication. It all depends on the doctor and whether or not you took both prescriptions without your new doctor knowing.
Okay. So I just realized this could be an issue. I didn't do it intentionally but realize I could be considered as someone who doctor shopped. I've been on pain Medication for my lower back for quite some time. (Couple years) Over this time frame I've had some things done to my teeth. I've had root canals, wisdom teeth removal, more root canals, tooth infections. I've gotten pain meds from the dentist as well as my primary Doctor. When I go to the dentists (one gets me in when the other is too busy) they give me the scripts for the meds and I drop them off at the pharmacy close by because it's convenient and has drive through. When I get from my primary I go to the pharmacy closest to them. Just out of convenience again. Can me getting these pain meds for my tooth issues during treatment for my back issues get me in legal trouble? I had no idea this was an issue until I started to think about it and do some research. I wasn't "shopping" I was going to doctors for the issues other than the back and they fixed it. Which resulted in multiple procedures at the dentist to get these issues fixed, so it wasn't made up tooth pain. I actually had a lot to be fixed with my mouth during taking pain meds for my back. I don't want to get arrested because of what this looks like. I love somewhere that doesn't have a prescription monitoring program. But I'm still concerned I could get in trouble for it looking like I was shopping for pain meds. I take two norco 5/325 a day for my back. However that doesn't touch when a tooth is infect or when you get impacted teeth. I didn't tell my dentist I was already taking the meds simply because they didn't ask and I didn't see it being an issue being the amount of pain my mouth was giving me was not controlled by that twice a day.
I fee like if it's for a diff issue n diff meds n the dentist is only a temporary thing where U need meds at times n if it's a diff med it's ok. As long as the primary dr is not a pain management dr. I get pain meds from my family doctor for 5 years for chronic pain w fibromyalgia. Occ I have seen an oral surgeon for extraction etc n have filled the 10-15 day pIn meds for that issue along w my reg meds n have had no problems.
Okay thanks! Just had no clue about this stuff. Didn't want to end up in trouble for doing this. It's not pain management, just primary doctor.
Concerned, Your dentist isn't going to check the pharmacy board's data base to see if you're filling scripts from multiple docs. Likely that your primary care doc isn't checking either. Where do you live that there's no schedule II monitoring data base? Do you pay cash for your meds or are you using insurance? How long have you been getting scripts from the pcp & the dentist? How much dental work can one person have?
Keikee , some ststes require all providers to check the PMP before prescribing a Schedule II drug, this would include dentists. The prescription being filled is what puts it on a patients PMP profile, It doesn't matter how it is paid form although states do require the method of payment as part of the info and it is listed on the profile. A patient does not have to sign a pain contract for a dr to decide to no longer prescribe pain meds if the patient has gotten a pain prescription from another dr. It all depends on the dr.
Yes, BL. I'm well aware of all that. You can save your lessons for someone else.
If you'd take the time to read what I wrote you'd see that what you're saying is not even relevant, bl. Who said anything about a pain contract?
I don't think you are in any legal trouble but having said that your primary could drop you especially if it is happening more than once or twice a year. Believe me you do not want that. The next time you see your primary or Before you have anymore dental work done you need to ask your primary if it is OK with him. If he says no then don't fill it. While dental pain is short lived and usually only lasts a day or two back pain is a different story. I talked to my doctor that is giving me my pain meds and asked her as soon as I got a prescription from her as to what to do in cases like this. She did not have a problem with it for dental or from an ER visit but that was a year or two ago. I am planning to have dental implants done in a few weeks and I will be asking her again by email message just to make sure she is still OK with it. Also getting the response by email protects me somewhat in case she forgets that she did say that it was OK for my dentist to give pain meds after having the dental work done. Remember the most important thing you can do to help your doctor trust you and to continue to prescribe pain medication for you is to keep your doctor in the loop when you anticipate you may need pain medication and not after you have filled it.
