Gabapentin Withdrawals (Page 6) (Top voted first)
UpdatedI'm being taken off of Neurontin/Gabapentin after seven years. I'm now crying, anxious, and itching all over! I have tried antihistamines and cortisone creams but with no relief.
Hi Chris, I am currently useing the, Organic Life Vitamins which is recomended on DR. Deans resource page and I have had good success withit.
Hi Chris,
It will take your body a week or longer to adjust to the magnesium, it is not used to having such a rich supply of magnesium. I suggest to start with 1 pill in the morning and 1 pill at bedtime for the first week. and gradually add a 3rd pill at mid day. As for the tight chest I didn't experience that. But as your body adjusts to the magnesium this should go away, or it could be totally unrelated to the magnesium, but if it continues and you are uncomfortable with the feeling take less but don't cut the pill in half as that would destroy the the Sustained release aspect of the product.
I take both ReMag and Jigsaw, I take the Jigsaw because of the vitamins that are in the product.
ReMag I do believe is 100% absorbed But I have not been able to determine how much of the Jigsaw product is absorbed. But it is probably higher than most other Magnesium product's on the market.
The good thing about these 2 magnesium supplements is they don't cause diarea when taken at the recomended dosage.
One thing about the ReMag is it is absorbed by your body and goes to work imediately. If I experience a headache which for me is my body telling me I'm not getting enough magnesium I can take 1 teaspoon of ReMag 250 mg. or 4 ml and in about 15 minuites the headache goes away.
If you decide to purchase the remag make sure you have a couple of hours to set aside as it is has a slight sedative effect. You will want to take a nap after taking the remag. This will go away after a week or so as your body adjusts to the magnesium.
You can continue to take the Jigsaw 1 or 2 pills a day and add the ReMag to this, with the ReMag I started with 40 drops in the morning and 40 drops in the evening 1 ml = 20 drops so 80 drops = 4 ml which is 250 mg. magnesium.
Research has shown that rubbing the magnesium on your skin which is absorbed through the skin the body will generate DHEA.
Listen to your body it will tell you when your are taking too much magnesium, even taking too much ReMag can give you diarea but if you have healthy kidneys you won't OD on the magnesium. After your body has had a chance to adjusted to the magnesium you should be able to maintain a daily dose of 500 mg. total magnesium.
But go slowly at first as I have described above. 2 pill Jigsaw is 250 mg., the recomended dose is 4 pills a day.
I apologise if I am making this too simplistic I don't intend to insult your intelegence I am simply passing on my own experience with these 2 products.
I have had many other conversations with other people and I know that just as I had experienced the sedative effect of taking magnesium and was wondering if I had taken too much so to have other people thought the same thing. But this effect will go away as your body adjusts to the magnesium.
It is my thinking that if I express myself by example that you will be better prepared for how your body will react when you first start takiing Magnesium.
I take both Jigsaw and ReMag, I don't take the ReMag at the same time I take the Jigsaw I wait at least an hour. between.
I know some doctors have prescribed as much as 1000 mg. magnesium. But it is your body and so you adjust according to your needs.
I wish you the best
I just started with the brain zaps. I read omega 3 oil might help. I used the remag but I found it didn't help like the jigsaw. Maybe I wasn't taking it correctly. The dropper wouldn't fill the top so ... How do I know what is 4ml?
Hi Chris I found this on magnesium:
utahsportsandwellness.com/pdfs/ChangeMagnesium.pdf
I hope it helps.
Gabyist, there are supplements called GABA supplements. Why wouldn't that help with the withdrawl?
Chris,
Gabapentin depletes magnesium,

Gabyist, how much vitamin d do you take. My gyn was making me take 10,000 iu which is 2500% ) 1 capsule).
Chris hi,
I take the Organic life Multivitamin (natural vitality) it contains 800 IU D3 it allso contains Concentrace 450 mg. trace minerals. The Iodine is natural in the Kelp so maybe there won't be any problems. It's all an experiment, what about calcium? It's been suggested that we supplement too much with calcium and not enough with magnesium. Do you read (natural news) the alternative news source?
I'll be picking up Omega 3 oil tomorrow.
See ya.
Hi. Been taking WAY to much gabapentin and scared as hell to get off because of the intense withdrawal and feelings of hopelessness. How much magnesium? What else helps? Really worried and don't know what to do because I've been taking a whole lot of the crap and just want off!!
gabyist, I wanted to thank you so very much for all your helpful advice, it really does work!!
Gabapentin is addictive as benzos are also. Bad stuff. Worse than opiods for sure. I don't have time to read this stuff...I want to later...hope it don't get blocked or taken down before I can read it. Really interested as I've experienced bad withdrawal from benzos...am titrating down off of the gabapentin now...dr apt tomorrow regarding and interested in what you use (chris are you doing ok now?)
No. I am getting my pain mgmt dr to refer me to a pyschiatrist bc I don't think my pain mgmt dr knows what to do. At first he told me neurontin couldn't do this and know he's back tracking (I guess afte he did more research). I need someone who knows what they are doing.
I am a diabetic neuropathic patient from last 5 yrs and have started Gabapentin from 600mg and currently reached 1800 mg per day. My doctor says that Gabapentin cannot be consumed more than 1800 mg for neuropathic pain but my pain still persists even after taking 1800 mg. Is it advisable to increase the dosage? Can anyone suggest any treatment for relief?
I only take 159 mg of gabapentin at night .Now it's only way I can sleep. If try to wing off of it I go to and can't sleep. I've only been taking for 2 months. any suggestions?
You asked why doctors dont tell us about the symptoms of withdrawl for the meds discussed... I think its because most doctors prescribe us these meds when we have problems bad enough to need the hard meds perminantly and wont have to experience withdrawl. Unless of course you are an abuser and run out too quickly, or arent given the drugs by a doctor at all. In which case you have more problems than the addiction anyways! However, I've read plenty about how the suboxone or subutex (used to get off pain meds) has its own side effects itself and require being wiened off. So if you dont have very serious, ongoing permanent pain, you are better off staying off the meds...
Let me see if I have this straight now. Gabapentin is addictive. So are Benzos. Extremely. But the FDA says it's fine to take both...take all you want. Ok. Domperidone which is OTC in many countries is practically illegal here. It helps with constipation. Here a doctor has to fill out a slew of paperwork in order to prescribe it. Medical Marijuana is illegal in most states. Children with seizures can't get it...parents must leave the state to get help. Why isn't it enough for docs to have the paperwork like for domperidone so it can help these kids? And others in pain. They don't want opiods...so.....and there IS no high with this syrup from the plant that the kids take. You can't have it. At all according to the Federal Agencies. Something is wrong. I must be misunderstanding something. Sort of like doing 4-8 years for manslaughter but people are still in prison for having a joint in their possession in the 60's. (Change.org petitions tell me this...a lady said her 84 year old dad will die in prison from this small crime if petitions don't sway officials to let him out.) I'm confused.
Is there any data on using magnesium during withdrawal from gabapentin and other psychiatric and pain medications??? Any documentation on this would be appreciated. Thanks!
Adding this to my post,
He was taking 2 -300mg Capsules 3 times a day. 600 x 3 = 1800mg every 24 hr period
I've been on Gabapentin, 800mg 3X/day for over 10 years. I hate it!!! I've begged to get off of it, can't stand the dependency or the side effects. I have neuropathy in my leg, the result of back surgery. I don't know what that would be like without the Gabapentin but I'd sure like to quit the G-word and see.
I'm a little on the forgetful side and missing a dose isn't pleasant, (nor am I). RiteAid once gave me Ibuproffen instead of Gaba, I was on a roller coaster ride with that since I still had the real stuff at home and the wrong stuff in the office.
Has anyone been in the same boat as me?
I don't want to be addicted to anything. I quit hydrocodone cold turkey after being on it 5 years. I developed an allergy to it. I've had problems with chronic pain for years. I take 1800 mg a day gabapentin. That may be why I had no withdrawal from the hydrocodone. Tramadol isn't working. My doctor wants me to see a pain Dr. I used to see one but he seemd to think i just wanted drugs because I increased the dosage on my own. I did not take it to feel high but for literal pain. I found out about gabapenten withdrawel when i ended up in icu a couple weeks ago. The itching about drove me crazy. They gave me benadryl 4 times but it did nothing. As soon as they gave me my gabapenten it went away. I need something better for pain and have no idea what. I dont want to go to a pain dr again. Im 58 and i dont drink or do drugs except for my RX's . No recreational drugs at all. I felt very insulted by him and have no desire to see another one. Is there anything my primary care dr. would feel ok giving me.
