Gabapentin Withdrawals (Page 5) (Top voted first)

Updated

I'm being taken off of Neurontin/Gabapentin after seven years. I'm now crying, anxious, and itching all over! I have tried antihistamines and cortisone creams but with no relief.

I'd love to hear how it goes for you. I've been completely off the drug for over 3 months now. It was very hard, but, very well worth it. I wish you the very best!

Anyone had stomach issues? It's been 2 months being off Gabby. Feeling good except for stomach and bloating??

No. Gabapentin is not an opioid, it is an anticonvulsant, mood stabilizer. And it is a narcotic, just not an opioid type narcotic. I take 300mgs 3times a day. It keeps my mood from going too low or too high. If fives me a general feeling of well being and I think its working great for me. It will cause withdrawal symptoms if abruptly stopped though.

How much were you taking and how quickly did you stop? I was on 2700 mg a day. Decided that was way too much. I tapered off 100 mg per week. Am now down to 900 mg per day. I didn't have the itching. Hope this helps

Hiya,

I am not sure if you are still on this site but I stumbled across it and hope you are as you seem to really know your stuff with regards to REMAG.. I am currently on Gabapentin for anxiety and the side effects are horrific, and maybe worse than anxiety itself..I want to taper off but have already come down by 100mg and am feeling pretty awful..I spoke with a customer services person at Dr Dean's office and they recommended Remag and Remyte...I am in the UK and it is more expensive here so a huge outlay for me, but if it works then of course priceless.. I would really appreciate your advice on it if you have the time.. Many thanks.

I relocated from one state to another and had to find a new pain doctor. During my first visit, my new doctor told me that my old doctor had me on dangerous levels of pain meds and needed to detox from them in order for him to treat me. which include, oxicodone 7.5 mg two times a day, diazepam 5mg two times a day, gabapentin 300mg 3 times a day and oxymorphone whenever I remembered to take it. He asked for me to go to a detox inpatient hospital and I was offended as I have never abused my meds. I decided that I was going to quit everything but the gabapentin as I got afraid reading how many ppl had seizures from stoping Valium. Well, withdrawl was intense until I stopped the gabapentin and it became pure hell. I got some severe anxiety and hot and cold flashes as well as some awesome hyper insomnia. Until I came across this thread and read about Magnesium. I would like to thank you for educating ppl about it. I was in absolute hell and I'm doing a lot better now.

It's awful how doctors never tell you how your body reacts to these meds before prescribing. I which I would had known how awful each of these meds are.

Thanks again.

I started taking gabapentin in April this year to help with withdrawals from alcohol. I was taking 300mg 3 x day. I was really afraid I would have withdrawals when it was time to come off so I started researching online and found this forum. This is where i learned about taking magnesium to help withdrawal symptoms.

I started by dropping 1 300 mg dose and holding for 2 weeks. My doctor recommended taking a good multi-vitamin and fish oil to help replenish vitamin stores. After two weeks, I dropped another 300mg dose, this is when I started feeling more anxious and depressed. I started taking ReMag at least 2 x per day. Usually in the morning and afternoon. Sometimes i would put the ReMag in a bottled water and sip on it all day. I would take the Calm magnesium in the evening because it does make you sleepy and to save on the ReMag which is far more expensive. I noticed a reduction in the withdrawal symptoms quickly. After two weeks holding on 300 mg, I reduced to 200mg 1 x day for 2 weeks, then finally down to 100 mg at night for 2 weeks. I really believe the ReMag and the Calm helped the withdrawals. I also put 2-3 cups of epsom salt in my bath water which really helps first thing in the morning and in the evening. It's been two weeks since my last dose and I have had minimal withdrawals. Best wishes!

In the event you take more than 1 medicine, you may want to be certain whether they should be not taken at the same time or a few hours apart from one another. I wasn't told and things only worsened. Be certain those prescribing and dispensing it to you know and ask them.

i recently stopped taking Gabapentin, and keept forgetting to refil it , so I just decided to stop taking it. I noticed increased fatigue (terrible) hopelessness, and restless painful legs when trying to go to sleep, I didn't notice the restless legs so much during the day. I really didn't think about it being withdrawl, but I got the prescription filled yesterday, and I finally was able to go to sleep, and I feel better today to.

Hi Chris,

I've been doing more research into magnesium, and I found this and I thought of you.

There is a magnesium product on the market now called (remag) google (carolyndean) there is a lot of interesting information and she has a book called (the magnesium miracle) in there she helps explain how meds mess with our magnesium.

I just took a spson salts bath. I was feeling a little down today.

Wish you well.

Gabyist,
How is your withdrawl going. My doctor switched me from Gralise (1200mg) to generic gabapentin 300mg 3x a day. I have only been doing this for 2 days. Then 300 for 3 days for a week then 300 once day for a week, then 300 every other day for a week. Can't wait to see how this goes - haha. I can kick myself for getting on this medicine in the 1st place. I am taking Nature calcium, mag, zinc pill once in the morning then sipping another in water the rest of the day. Any advice on your mag supplements since you have been taking them longer than me?
