Gabapentin Withdrawals (Page 3)

Updated

I'm being taken off of Neurontin/Gabapentin after seven years. I'm now crying, anxious, and itching all over! I have tried antihistamines and cortisone creams but with no relief.

Hi. Been taking WAY to much gabapentin and scared as hell to get off because of the intense withdrawal and feelings of hopelessness. How much magnesium? What else helps? Really worried and don't know what to do because I've been taking a whole lot of the crap and just want off!!

I take jigsaw brand that I order over the Internet. Also take omega 3 fish oil. Try the website benzo buddies or the road back They talk about tapering off 10% at a time holding for 2-4 weeks before tapering again. I was on 1600 mg and have been tapering for a year know. I am currently on 160 mg (80mg every 12 hours). There is also the liquid magnesium by remag but it didn't help me like jigsaw did. Jigsaw has b6 in it and I think that's why it helps me more. If I skip a day or 2 of mag supplements, I become a complete mess again. I still have some anxiety and depression but not as bad as it was before. Good luck. I don't want to scare u but I've had a year of hell tapering off this medicine. Don't drink any caffeine or stimulants, or sinus medicine, makes anxiety worse.

I just got back from urgent care after 4 hours and the docs don't know what's wrong, I feel like I've been getting stabbed by pins and needles that make me cry and the hot sweats on cold day and pain that I've been up 3 days straight. My doctor told me gabapentin has no withdrawl affects and no side affects. I stopped taking it a few days ago due to needing refill, and took it lastnight and felt like I was on drugs that the pain was gone. I know I'm addacted to it now and doctors know nothing

Some doctors know, some don't. Taper down instead of cold turkey.

Gabapentin is addictive as benzos are also. Bad stuff. Worse than opiods for sure. I don't have time to read this stuff...I want to later...hope it don't get blocked or taken down before I can read it. Really interested as I've experienced bad withdrawal from benzos...am titrating down off of the gabapentin now...dr apt tomorrow regarding and interested in what you use (chris are you doing ok now?)

No. I am getting my pain mgmt dr to refer me to a pyschiatrist bc I don't think my pain mgmt dr knows what to do. At first he told me neurontin couldn't do this and know he's back tracking (I guess afte he did more research). I need someone who knows what they are doing.

when u stopped the gabapentins, did u experience anxiety and chest pains as well as bad gas reflux? how long did u cope with the pain? i was on gabapentins off and on for a year and just experienced anxiety and chest pains and acid reflux for first time, i am still going thru it all since November 14th and dr said there's no such thing as gabapentin withdrawal, she put me on two different heartburn meds and 2 different anxiety meds, during the day it isn't bad but at nighttime it's like worst nightmare sometimes i feel as if i am dying...

I am a diabetic neuropathic patient from last 5 yrs and have started Gabapentin from 600mg and currently reached 1800 mg per day. My doctor says that Gabapentin cannot be consumed more than 1800 mg for neuropathic pain but my pain still persists even after taking 1800 mg. Is it advisable to increase the dosage? Can anyone suggest any treatment for relief?

You asked why doctors dont tell us about the symptoms of withdrawl for the meds discussed... I think its because most doctors prescribe us these meds when we have problems bad enough to need the hard meds perminantly and wont have to experience withdrawl. Unless of course you are an abuser and run out too quickly, or arent given the drugs by a doctor at all. In which case you have more problems than the addiction anyways! However, I've read plenty about how the suboxone or subutex (used to get off pain meds) has its own side effects itself and require being wiened off. So if you dont have very serious, ongoing permanent pain, you are better off staying off the meds...

Been on gabapentin daily now for about 6 weeks...I must admit that I have been taking really high doses. I was prescribed 3600 mgs a day but I'm probably taking 4x that amount.Im done now because I don't like that I quickly became so addicted to them, but I am wondering what will happen to me. Will I withdraw because I was on such an extensively high dose? I know I have only been taking gabapentin for about 6 weeks but I did abuse it so I was wondering about the withdrawal symptoms and what I could do to help myself with them. I do not have anymore gabapentin! I threw them away and will never take them again. I am an addict . I have been sober for 4 years and I feel so angry with myself that I let this happen!

Hi, Back again with the gabapentin 300mg and still have the same problems, I'm now trying to stop the meds and have gone to 300mg every other day and will try that for a month or so to see if it helps at all.. I did notice that when I stopped the 300mg for that day I had a problem with sleep but I think as time goes on my body will adjust.. I was reading on this form and they were talking about Magnesium that the Gabapentin depletes Magensium from the body and that by taking baths with Epson salts or rinsing your mouth out will replace the magensium witch will help with stopping Gabapentin..

Is this true..??? I can;t remember his name but it began with a G... There is a lot of good info on this form, Thanks and have a nice day

FINALLY, got off neurontin. MANY doctors don't understand the withdrawl but many pharmacist do. Guess they understand the chemistry makeup better. Went to a pyschiatrist to tapper me off the last 100 mg. she put me on lowest dose of a beta blocker (inderal) and Valium and tapered 20 mg per week even though her first suggestion was 50mg then off. I said hell no, I'll just taper 20 mg per week without your help like I have been doing for months. (Neurontin comes in liquid) I have been off now for 3 weeks. Sleep is the biggest problem. She got me off the Valium and now I'm on trazadone which is not addictive. But, sleep is still a problem. Magnesium with B6 helps and fish oil for tapering. She treated my detox like a sedative detox. I am taking Epsom salt baths now to try to get this stuff out my tissue.

WOOOOAH there. Trazodone isn't addictive???? I came off the last 50 mg and it was hell!!! My legs ached so bad I thought I'd just go back on it...and I did. Then started biting off little bits and dealt with the leg pain. Some may not...everyone's different but gabapentin is extremely addictive and many abuse it I read....but the dea said opiods are addictive...not neurontin...so whatever they say..... lol

I was wondering how u are doing with getting off the gabapentin... I take probably the same amount you do... I abuse it as well and take WAY to much... very very angry at myself... I've started a taper yesterday of about 1/2 of what I was taking and just started magnesium and Gabba gabba supplements today... Hope they help, feeling ok., except bad back pain and hot and cold flashes .

Let me see if I have this straight now. Gabapentin is addictive. So are Benzos. Extremely. But the FDA says it's fine to take both...take all you want. Ok. Domperidone which is OTC in many countries is practically illegal here. It helps with constipation. Here a doctor has to fill out a slew of paperwork in order to prescribe it. Medical Marijuana is illegal in most states. Children with seizures can't get it...parents must leave the state to get help. Why isn't it enough for docs to have the paperwork like for domperidone so it can help these kids? And others in pain. They don't want opiods...so.....and there IS no high with this syrup from the plant that the kids take. You can't have it. At all according to the Federal Agencies. Something is wrong. I must be misunderstanding something. Sort of like doing 4-8 years for manslaughter but people are still in prison for having a joint in their possession in the 60's. (Change.org petitions tell me this...a lady said her 84 year old dad will die in prison from this small crime if petitions don't sway officials to let him out.) I'm confused.

Is there any data on using magnesium during withdrawal from gabapentin and other psychiatric and pain medications??? Any documentation on this would be appreciated. Thanks!

My husband was told he could stop taking Gabapentin last week, after taking it for a year. The PAC told him stopping would not cause any problems. He started feeling bad within 1-2 days and it just got worse. Now a 9 days later he is still experiencing Withdrawal Symptoms:
Nausea, diarrhea, extreme fatigue, cold sweat, anxiety, irritability, back pain, neck pain, stomach pain.
I searched Gabapentin Withdrawals and very thankful I found out that is what is causing these symptoms. We are going to try high magnesium foods and epsom salt baths and pray it helps. It has been awful for him.
Why didn't the PAC warn us or offer some suggests to help deal with the withdrawls. He was taking Gabapentin in hopes of helping his chronic back pain.
If anyone has more suggestions, we sure would like to hear the things that work.
