Updated

I have been testing positive for benzos and i cant figure out why. I have been taking suboxone & Ondansetron & promethazine. Thats it. If i fail another drug test, then my doctor is gonna kick me out. If anybody knows of any common substances, prescription or over the counter medications please inform me. Thanks

Would zofran cause a false positive FOR Benzos? Or levothyroxine, visteral , zofran , pepcid, zantac, in profin , advil,or allergy meds like zyrtek claritin benadryl??

If you get a false positive - you know you didn't take anything you shouldn't have taken - request they send the results to a hospital lab for further confirmation. They did this for me and confirmed their test was incorrect. Thank Goodness!

Do you ever drink energy drinks such as "monster"?. I'm trying to make as many people as possible aware of this probability because I went through Hell trying to convince my doctor and nurses I wasn't taking benzo's. I lost my right to take home my daily medication and was one test away from being kicked off the program. I had one nurse look at me one day and say " the only way you can test positive for a benzo's is if you take one". Thank God I proved her, and the rest of them wrong but not until I begged them to send my positive tests for more testing. From that day 10 months ago I have periodically tested positive but they know to send those ua's off for further testing prior to taking away any carry medications. Monster energy drinks is what causes my tests to be positive because I don't take anything other than my methadone.

Here is a message for all on this chat page. Urinalysis is a cheap way to test for drug abuse however the results of this cheap and highly HIGHLY unreliable test is and will always be subject to cross contamination by everything from the food consumed in the previous 48 hours to OTC medications. For example ...eating a poppy seed bagel can result in a positive heroin result. THIS IS A FACT! Google it! Using Aspercream with lidocaine can leave cocaine metabolites in urine showing a false positive for cocaine abuse. Most if not all "dipstick urinalysis" has up to a 30% false positive or false negative rate and that is the bottom line period. There is ONLY ONE WAY to know absolutely what is or is not in ones urine and that is a Gas Chromatography Mass Spectrometry test. However that test can cost anywhere from $250 to $500 bucks, NOT $2.50 which is the cost of Dipstick test purchased wholesale on Amazon. Many lives and carries have gone down the s***ter along with tested urine and that is so unfortunate. So my advice to anyone who's life or wellbeing is on the urinalysis test chopping block is GET A LAWYER AND THREATENED LAW SUIT. I assure you that will get the attention of your overlords.

Hi John,

I appreciate your time answering peoples questions. I was the one (might have been others) who mentioned casually that Naproxen has been known to cause false positives.

You aren't correct in regards to having the same sample retested. They do not save or offer that option. I talked with the lab about saving some for a retest if it came back positive because my tests, and I assume everyone else's tests were non confirmation tests with really aren't even allowed to be used for any legal or medication suspending actions.

The more careful urine test with confirmation is much more accurate and tests a second time if anything comes back positive. My doctor has been unwilling to allow the the urine with confirmation.

As for your "suspicions" It's a regular MD. I've never had any drug or addiction issues. I don't drink, smoke or even take medications for cold or flu. I don't even eat fast food, drink carbonated beverages, or eat food with HFCS or hydrogenated oils. I haven't taken any recreational drugs for decades and other than a medical emergency when I was given a single benzo in 2010, I haven't taken anything Benzo related or that should reasonable be expected to cause 2 positives out of 6 tests.

The 99.9% statement is also absolutely false and there are ZERO recognized publications that agree with a 99.9% accuracy rate for urine testing. This is the attitude that is costing me, and I'm guessing at least some of the people here. (some of you are taking drugs and quite frankly should be on a different site). I tested positive on two different occasions, neither time using a urine with confirmation and, as you say, I know for an absolute fact I didn't take anything yet he sits there and tells me he's never seen a false positive as though what he thinks is true has value when I have the facts and know he's so wrong with me he's probably ruined other peoples lives. All I wanted was the option to use the most accurate test positive before he stains my records with questions of drug abuse or adjusts my care based on bad tests.

I was in bed for 10 years and I'm now up and working a somewhat real job. I went from not being able to walk 300 feet and refusing to get further than that from a vehicle to walking for miles and even running. I wouldn't risk that for anything.

As for legal action, I tried to get the dr to give me a better test and it was denied so I talking with an attorney I know and he agreed to call the DR. The DR refused to talk to him and wasn't happy when I came in. I told him I wasn't looking to sue and that I had found out that DR's like urine tests over blood tests because they can detect the drug for a longer period of time so that I was fine with the urine test as long as it included the confirmation. (initially I wanted a blood test assuming it was more accurate) He didn't recalling telling the nurse no when I called and I had taken my test earlier that day so we just ignored the issue for that visit but who knows what test I'll get next time.

You state we always have the legal right to retest but you seem to think that people hire attorneys for something other than enforcing their legal rights. I asked repeatedly for immediate retests the first two times I tested positive because I didn't want to ruin my relationship with a DR I really needed to help me beyond giving me drugs. Those two tests have me working with a doctor that assumes I'm a lying drug addict and I wasn't given any option to contest those single panel results which resulted in a relationship that begrudgingly continues my medication with no effort to help or belief in anything I say. Sure there is a legal right to get tested again that can be enforced at some point but I've been put in a category of people that need to be protected from themselves and can't even be trusted to report honest symptoms because my initial tests were not confirmed and now have to wonder every month if I'm going to lose my job because my medication gets changed.

I know there is a tendency to make a lot of assumptions about doctors and medical care and I'm sure my situation is a significant outlier but one thing you can see in a lot of these posts is the impact of the fear of not knowing what the person who decides your quality of life is going to do when they trust a single panel urine test so much they will not even confirm the results.

Again I want to thank you for taking the time to help. I apologize about coming off a little angry but it's a very emotional topic and it's very difficult to accept the constant assumption that I'm a drug addict and a liar. I know that isn't your intent but when you include it in your comments it continues a pattern.

God Bless you! I'm on the other side of the coin now for the past 12yrs with STAGE 4 CANCER! I DON'T CLAIM TO KNOW IT ALL ECT??? IT IS A HORRIBLE bureaucracy How my "OLD" PROFESSION DOCS & NOW PHARMACISTS ALIKE ARE TAKING AWAY MEDS FROM THE SICK & SUFFERING. The actual issue if you have read a lot or a few of my posts, is the DEA & OBAMA ADMIN ALONG WITH 'CERTAIN" STATES HAVING A NEW DRUG War on PRESCRIPTION DRUGS! MAINLY OPIATE'S & BENZOS ECT.... ANYWAY IT TOOK MOST LIKELY A FEW SENATORS & CONGESSMENS' CHILDREN TO OD OR DIE ECT, JUST TO HAVE THESE SCREWED UP DEA STRINGENT PROFILING ECT...IT WORKS ITS WAY DOWN TO THE UNDERPAID (IE. OBAMACARE) HMO CLINIC DOCS THAT LOSE LICENCES OVER JUST ACTUALLY DOING THERE JOBS? SMH....SO NOW I CANT EVEN TAKE PAIN MEDS FOR STAGE 4 CANCER, wtf? FOR THE PAST 2YRS BEEN STUCK ON METHADONE & IT DOESN'T WORK WELL FOR PAIN AT ALL? WORST PART IS THAT IT'S WAY MORE DANGEROUS & ADDICTING THAN ACTUAL HEROIN! HORRIBLE!??

Dude it's the zorfran! It will always show positive for benzo. I took a couple cheap drug tests to my doc. dissolved in a cup with a Ondansetron and showed them that it does! I got kicked out by 2 docs for the same s*** but it's 100% zorfran!

Hey girl you're the one that's not very bright why don't you read the sentence? I also said for the last 12 years I've been a stage 4 cancer patient laid up in bed and on hospice for the past year-and-a-half. The last thing I want to do or care to do is correct my grammar ECT. You're the one that shows no education. Stop trolling people maybe you'll learn something I highly doubt it?

I have a couple important answers for all of you. If you're really serious and you're coming up with a false positive benzo test without using benzos? Then whoever is texting you by law has to retest you but with obviously the same your urinalysis because if they didn't use the same one it could still get out of your system? Otherwise the only other thing I have to say on this it would be wasting a lot of people's time that really need help what serious issues if you're just asking questions on finding out are trying to find out how long I want or can of it would take to come out of your system? There's no actual mean number or time? You can stay in fat cells up to 6 months. I'm just qualified telling you this as a MD and a pharmacist so I have both sides of the coin have also been tested for drugs many times and have had false positives for many different things. So it's definitely possible that out of all the various kinds of drug test which a 9 point drug test is the most sensitive in which it will be the highest checkpoints for any kind of drug? All I know is make sure if you're not using anything that has benzodiazepine in it then by law they have to retest at least in America but by using the same urinalysis and won't let you use another urinalysis when days go by? And no that doesn't mean that using the same test is it going to come out the same way. No matter what this thing is as well everything we do because whether we put it into a computer a human puts it into a computer so if you never did any kind of benzodiazepine? It's your right and really your duty to make sure that they are on point and not taking advantage of other patients like you if that is the case? I hope this helps you?

I took a urine test and it came back showing I had benzodiazepine in my system. Would Zofran cause a false positive for this or methadone? And would I have to tell them that I was taking Zofran and had it in my system?

ATTENTION: After going to my Suboxone doctor for a few months now and failing EVERY one of my drug tests for benzos, I realized the ONLY thing that I had changed was being put on Celexa. After searching for any solution as to why I could be failing because I knew I wasn't taking any benzos, I came upon this site. So pretty much I challenged my doctor to take me off of the Celexa to prove that had to be what was making me fail all of my drug tests... Soooo... today, one week later and with NO CELEXA... I FINALLY PASSED MY DRUG TEST!! I can say with 100% confidence that YES, Celexa CAN MAKE YOU TEST POSITIVE FOR BENZOS. I DONT CARE WHAT ANY DOCTOR HAS TO SAY. I HAVE PROOF IN BLACK AND WHITE!!!

I'm also reporting this to the FDA in hopes of helping others who truly want help and are struggling with this problem! I'm so thankful to the people who posted on here, because it gave me a place to start, and with all your posts the doctor had to at least consider the possibility. And I knew I was telling the truth but to be able to prove it to my doctor that for #1 I wasn't lying and for #2 that I wasn't crazy was all worth it!! Thank you to all that posted! By the way, Celexa has helped tremendously with my depression. It's wonderful for that purpose, but doctors are going to have to be made aware, maybe ahead of time that you will possibly show up in your blood or urine test for benzos. So if that's a concern for you I would most definitely ask for a before Celexa drug test then the after Celexa drug test! Good Luck!

The fda knows this already. They are well aware of the many drugs that can cause false positives during a simple uds. I do not know what you expect the FDA to do about this, other than put it online, which it probably already is. Anyway, urine is the most common sample type used for drug testing by employers. A urinalysis will show the presence of a drug in the system after the drug effects have worn off; however, the length of time varies by drug. Typical urine drug tests for employment purposes may screen for amphetamines or methamphetamines, cocaine, marijuana, opiates like oxycodone or heroin, but cannot differentiate ALL drugs, therefore they can often show false positives. For way more specific testing in this case, there is a massive amount of literature on this subject freely available online. Just ask google and you will get a ton of information on false positives etc. Sadly, urine drug screening tests are very simple. They are usually a 5 or 9 drug screen thing which is dipped in the urine and shows the most commonly abused type of drugs. In case of important situations, ie keeping your job or staying out of prison, demand a more specific test. The immunoassay or urine test is performed first and is often used as a screening method. If the immunoassay is negative, no further action is required, and the results are reported as negative. If the sample is positive, an additional confirmatory GC-MS analysis is performed. The more specific GC/MS, (gas chromatography-mass spectrometry) is used as a confirmatory test to identify individual drug substances or metabolites and quantify the amount of the substance. Confirmatory tests, such as GC-MS should be utilized prior to reporting positive drug test results. If your company or parole officer or whoever is testing you, will not pay for this test, I think in some cases, like listed above, make it well worth paying for the extra cost yourself. I should think that if you are vindicated, I should think restitution would be likely. If not sue them. I would. Hope this helps.

I know your pain. I have had false positives/faint lines for benzodiazepines lately even though I haven't taken them. I even have a prescription for them and don't take them. I am struggling with it because I was an addict who is now sober. Legally no one can touch me because of my prescription but I have something to prove. False positives are bulls***.

I had a urine drug test which showed positives for both benzos and oxycodone. I take neither one of them. I am trying very hard to figure out what might have caused these false positives in my urine test... My drugs include the following: Neurontin, Methadone, Cyclobenziprine (generix for flexeril), Prempro, Prozac, Seroquel, Spironolactone, Nexium, Calciitrol, Trileptal, Dodusafe Sodium (DSS), Dulcolax- maybe once every 2 weeks, Miralax and Levothyroxine. My Dr. and I have a drug contract and these positives have me stumped and I need answers... help anyone? Any other sites I should try?

Recovering heroin addict. I take suboxone sub/film 12mg/day. Every month I test + for benzodiazepines & oxycontin. I hate benzos and It was 2-3 years since l took a Valium for severe anxiety. My doctor even started using a different test, same + results every time! The only other med I am prescribed to is adipex, which would only + for amphetamines. Ihave used occasionally, but that wouldn't cause + for benzos. I wonder if it something in the naloxone to cause false +'s.

Naloxone (not to be confused with naltrexone) is also a thebaine derivative like oxycodone. Despite that it will not produce the same euphoria or effect of oxycodone, it's chemical structure, and therefore chemistry, is very, very similar (borderline identical) to that of oxymorphone--which gives naloxone its ability to interfere with most opiates and opioids--which is a metabolite (byproduct) produced from the liver when breaking down oxycodone (therefore oxycontin also).

If the drug test(s) is looking for this metabolite, it will very likely test positive for oxycontin. There's your answer.
