Extreme Salty Taste In Mouth For 20 Days! (Page 2) (Top voted first)

Updated

I'm a 51 yr. old female who woke up on April 7, 2011, with an extremely salty taste in my mouth. When I tried to drink water to wash it out, it was like drinking salt gargle water. Nothing I eat or drink makes it go away. I can't stand to put anything in my mouth that is salty because the salt taste already in my mouth makes it almost unswallowable. Prior to that day, I have only 2 regular medications that I take daily: Lisinopril 40 mg( increased from 20 mg in mid November) for high BPas well as HCTZ 25 mg(been taking Lisinopril for 8 years) and 1mg of ropinorole(generic for Requip) for RLS (taking for almost 6 years). I also take black cohosh twice a day for hot flashes and night sweats(last menstrual cycle was Sept. 2010). On March 18, I started taking a 10 day prescription for NOHIST for a sinus inflammation, as well as FLONASE and a cough medicine. I had taken both the Flonase and cough medicine years previously, but had never had the NOHIST before. I finished the NOHIST and had no other symptoms. I had also been following a nutrition plan since mid- February losing 2-3 lbs. per week, eating lots of protein, and walking 2 miles 3-4 times a week on a treadmill at the gym. I was feeling good and my energy levels were good. I had been drinking 5-6 glasses of water daily and then after the salty taste, I could hardly drink one glass. I ended up with a UTI because of the lack of fluids that I wasn't able to drink, and then had to take Cipro for 3 days and drink (salty) cranberry juice. Yuck! I also had lab work done and it showed a positive on the A & A and also a positive on the IGG. With those results, I was referred to a rheumatologist (which could take months to get in to see) and my primary care doctor changed by BP med to Triamatrene 75 mg and HTCZ 50 mg. Its been 5 days on the new BP med with no change yet. My willpower to make myself drink and eat is slowly eroding. I know that if I don't keep drinking that I could end up seriously dehydrated and in the hospital, with who knows what other problems. My doctor doesn't want to see me for 6 weeks and I still don't know when I will get an appt. with the rheumatologist!!! I have searched everything I can think of on the internet, without any hope of what it could be. I am a teacher and mother of three daughters who need me to stay out of the hospital! I hope that you can come up with a possible cause or direction that will find answers and soon! So I challenge you to find an answer, and in the meantime, drink a glass of water with about 5 TBS. of salt in it and drink it, at least 3 times a day and also swish it around in your mouth continuously and then swallow it!!!! The only time you won't taste it is when you go to sleep. And its the first thing that you consciously are aware of the instant that you wake up! Then think about having to do this for at least the next 20 days and then maybe you will have an idea of how I am feeling!!!!! Desperate!!!!!!!!!

Going on a year for me. Been to every speacialist had every test ran. Litterally $1000.00 of different anti botics and lab work. Still no answer lost 50 pounds because everything tastes over salted. Mainly suck on Hard candy and chew Gum. Was the apitiany of health always ate healthly drank 6-8 16 ounces bottled water daily. Just woke up and there it was no warning. No change of meds. Dr "Stumped" just live with it. At 88 pounds now not sure how much more living with it I can do. If anyone ever gets a direct concrete answer please share!!

I am 68 and had this salty taste for five years. It comes and goes (mostly comes) It started when I scratched an itch on my arm , there was a sensation of touching a potato chip to the tongue. Now it's like a tea spoon of sea salt. No doctor I talked to ever heard of this so therefore it must not be. (gave up} Any info would be a blessing.

Hello again. Sara Jane here. Well so far all the MRI results have been negative. No sinus abnormalities, all soft brain tissue clear of obstructions. The Dr has ordered more blood work and a CAT scan. He explained that the MRI only reveals issues in soft tissue but a CAT scan will reveal any abnormalities in bones. He wants to rule out the possibility of any crack or break in a bone in my neck that could be leaking spinal fluid into the nose or mouth. A reach I must admit but I am willing to try anything at this point to find an answer. I still believe that God heals us and declare He is able. My prayer is for a complete healing however He chooses to do so. To all of you still struggling with this condition, be encouraged our faith is in the One who created us and He will not abandon His own.

Yes a cat scan will diagnose any infection in the bone itself, which is possible. At least you might find out what is causing the salty taste. Most Doctors are not that thorough. Did you try snorting with salt water? It is very effective in clearing any debris which has formed. Good luck.

I have seen 3 doctors about this condition. I have eliminated everything that I can that has any amount of sodium in it. I was drinking bottled water that tasted like a bottle of salt. I just switched to a non-sodium water and going to see if that helps. My first doctor put me on Vitamin B complex.....not the answer. The second doctor had me swish my mouth with a compounded oral wash....no available. I finally went to a ENT this week and he said that he is treating it as a former trauma to the nerve that connects the tongue and put me on Gabenpentin. I am to go back in 3 weeks. I hate being on meds, but I would gladly welcome them to my system if it indeed helped. He is going to go down thru my sinus cavity with a small scope when I go back. I almost wished he would find something, so that I can attribute it to my condition. I will keep everyone posted.

I have just been told by my Dr that due to the pencillin i was on for strep throat, that the pills destroyed some of the good bacteria and this is why i had , at first, a metallic taste, and now a salty taste. I am now taking a compounded oral wash that is supposed to work. ( day 5 and its hasnt worked yet) . I was also advised to eat alot of regular plain yogurt as it helps put back good bacteria into your body.. Its taste horrible .. ( salty of course) but i am forcing myself to do it. I am so frustrated.. i love my red wine ( its the only alchohol i drink) and now i cant enjoy it anymore .. The salt taste is too strong and it ruins everything i drink and most of what i eat..

Nothing has worked as yet.. i have finished the mouth (oral compound) wash and it didnt work. Now, they are saying it could be a zinc deficiency and am now taking 5 Zinc losenges as day . I have only taken 3 so far and of course, nothing yet. I have tried eating raw lemons, drinking milk , eating my yogurt ... i still drink 5 -6 glasses of water every day so i know i am NOT dehydrated.. I wake up in the morning praying its gone but within seconds, i know its still there! People who dont have this dont understand how awful it is to have this taste constantly .. every minute of every day. I am very healthly otherwise and feel great .. except for this ... its really ruining the enjoyment of life ! Please.. anybody have any other ideas??????????????????

Penny if you do have Sjogrens there are medications that help. The only way for sure to know if the problem is sjogrens is to have a small biopsy inside your lip..
Sjogrens is where your lymphocyte cells attack your endocrine system, like saliva
glands which give you extreme dry mouth and in my case my brain interprets it to
be salt. The medications have not helped me but they do help many people.
The best person to see is a rheumatologist. Best of luck, let us hear from you.

I too, have this condition. My dentist and hygenist could NOT give me an answer! I brush 3 times a day, rinse w/Listerine and floss. This does NOT help. I do put salt on anything, nor have I ever. I am in my 50's; I read that it is mostly woman that get it. Postmenopausal. Might be; that more women go to a Dr. concerning this. Also read that it will cease in time?? It is driving me crazy! I am on very little pain meds. And an occasional anxiety med, a benzodiaphiam(sp). It may lie with the pain meds, which baking soda or powder is a buffer. That's what I really wonder about. Could it be the buffer in that? I have been taking this pain med. for too long, to just stop! Plus, I only take 15mgs. a day. When my Dr prescribed me to take: 2-10mg every 4 hour's.

This is my first post here, same issue has been happening with me. How salty taste, can't taste chocolate, anything sweet doesn't taste sweet. Usually can't eat much because after first few bites I sometimes become nauseous. Been to many forums and many websites looking for solutions. Have tried many juicer solutions to detox with vegetable solutions and straight lemon juice from fresh lemons. Also tried apple cider vinegar and water mix. I am diabetic and on medication for sugar. My issue started when taking an antibiotic for a foot fungus. The same antibiotic is use for people having dental work done. After three weeks on the antibiotic the situation with the salty taste, nausea started. I do believe the detox solutions are good however do not clear up the issues with the salty taste 100%. I am now trying the vitamin Caltrate solution. It is the 600+ D3 vitamin. I've only taken the tablet twice and do believe it has helped some taste however chocolate and sugar has not been fully restored. I do know that one thing has saved me from going completely nuts, pardon the pun, but walnuts have really helps to clear up the nauseous taste in my mouth many days. I recommend using walnuts for anyone who can have nuts in their diet. Second thing I've taken note of is using Crystal lite drink mix straight on my tongue removes the salty taste for 15 to 20 minutes but I can't recommend that completely because again you're using a chemical which can possibly add toxin to your body. I've only use Crystal lite when I feel like the taste and nausea SNES have got to go at least for a few minutes. Hoping that the vitamin works and I'll try to report back my results later.

understand the frustration. The ENT I was sent to was a nut case. When I described my symptoms he said "uh let me go see what I can find online cause I've never heard of anything like this." Then came back and said "well I checked online and there's nothing at all about anything of this nature". Wack job! There's plenty online . . . . . no cure or what causes it but there is plenty online. I had it for a month the first time. Then left as quick as it came. Now suddenly it's back for no reason. Driving me totally nuts.

The same thing happened to me, when I was about 27. The salt was all over, my saliva, my eyes where burning, my stomach was upset, my urine burned. One other side affect I noticed was my bones , and skin was very sensitive to touch such as clapping. This lasted for several years, I am 70 years old now, and still have the bone pain. This happened in Portland Maine, and I had lobsters, and other seafood. No Doctors could ever figure what the problem was.

My husband was given 25mg of hctz instead of 12.5 and was told to break in half due to error. We forgot and he just told me all he can taste is salt! Maybe YOUR getting to much! He has taken it in higher dose for about a week. Hope this helps.

I know that this is an old thread, but I thought I'd post my experiences anyway in the hope that it may help someone who may land here (as I did, looking for a cure). About 2 months ago I started to experience a salty/acid taste in my mouth. It first started slowly and then became unbearable. No amount of teeth brushing, gargling with mouth wash and scrubbing my tongue would help. Long story short, after 2 months of this agony, it dawned on me that I had made a recent change in the brand of face wash that I was using. The new face wash contained salicylic acid and was deposited on my lips and entered my mouth as I licked my lips throughout the day and washed my face in the morning and at bedtime. As soon as I stopped using the new face wash, the salty/acid taste was gone within 2 to 3 days! Oh, the joy!!! I understand that everyone's situation may be different, but it might in some cases be something as simple as a new brand of lipstick, lip balm, or in my case, face wash, that is the root cause of this issue. Hope my experience helps someone. Take care.

I have a salty taste in my mouth which seems to have a buring irritating effect on my tongue. It's been bothering me now for the last few weeks and doesn't seem to be getting any better. I've seem and ENT and a few other doctors who seem to feel that the problem will eventually go away on it's own.
