Extreme Mood Swings On Prozac

Updated

Hi everyone,

I developed anxiety attacks 2 weeks ago due to a relationship problem. I tried to solve too many problems at once associated with the split and couldn't sleep for a long time resulting in my current condition. I'm 37 and never experienced anything like this. It scared me so much that I started having delusions and slight hallucinations and it wouldn't stop. I had horrible thoughts because I believed that I had become insane. I found a great doctor who spent an hour with me and suggested I commence a government initiative called a mental health care plan involving 10 free psychologist visits per year. He prescribed me Prozac 20 mg and Seroquel. The 2nd night I felt so content, calm and happy which continued into the next day after a great sleep. (This included a real sense of happiness) Thinking the medication was working I felt a great sense of relief. But then the anxiety returned on the 3rd night, absolutely deflating me beyond belief. I just want to ask if these types of extreme mood swings are normal or could it be a sign of bi polar and/or depression? I would love to hear some replies because I'm really struggling at the moment. I feel so helpless.

These can be normal side effects of these medications and I've found that it typically takes about 3 weeks for them to go away. The NIH lists other typical side effects as possibly including nausea, dizziness, headache, and weight changes.

If they become severe, or don't go away in a few weeks, you should consult your doctor, as you may need to try different medications.

Has there been any change?

I suggest hanging in there for while. Please let your shrinks know what problems you are having as soon as possible. I have schizoaffective disorder and have had for several decades. I'm almost 71 now and I have changed medications several times. Both Prozac and Seroquel are both excellent drugs but maybe are not right for you. Who knows? It's too early to tell though. What you really need is a proper dianosis. It's a bit iffy to prescribe drugs for you without a diagnosis. You may need to be seen as often as every two weeks for a while and try a few different drugs over time for a psychiatrist to give you a diagnosis. Please seek proper help by all means!

Hi, I know exactly how you feel, the same thing happened to me in 2014, I was seeing evil things, talking to people that are dead, hallucinations!! My family called 911 and the Dr's didn't even know what was wrong, like you said I felt like I was going insane!! Panic attacks, couldn't sleep this episode happened for 3 days and night's straight!! Never found out what was going on! I never have taken what your Dr. Gave you but my Dr. Put me on Paxil for the depression because my Chinchilla died also when all this was happening and I was very depressed and that has done wonders for me and for the anxiety she put me on Diazapam 5mgs. That not only calms me down it helps me sleep!! Maybe talk to your Dr. About those 2 medications, Paxil 10 mgs. One a day And Diazapam 5mgs 2 a day!! This will help you I know it will, I wish you the very best, because it's horrible to feel and be like that!!

Prozac is an antidepresant and seroquel is an antipsychotic. Your brain is fighting the dysregulation the meds are causing. Your problems are from the emotional upheaval caused by your breakup. The lack of sleep was most likely causing the hallucinations. You really should be getting talk therapy along with meds. You need to alert your doctor to these adverse effects because in some people they can cause the opposite effect. Did your doctor tell you that it's likely you will experience withdrawal if you try to get off? I understand that the appeal to take a pill and be able to function is appealing but be very careful because these drugs blunt emotions they don't get rid of depression or anxiety. It doesn't cure the problem it only makes the symptoms bearable. You might want to look into alternatives that don't involve meds but don't ever stop them suddenly. You must taper off.

Prozac causes a lot of side effects. The medicine can make you happy but it forces you to feel though you actually are not. I almost died after 3 weeks due to side effects (stomach pain, diarrhea, dehydration, vomit, fast heart beats causing shortness of breath). I know somebody else almost died due to prozac for side effects. Also it is reported that prozac causes patient suicide attempts in some cases.

Try to find medicine that fits you. Every person reacts differently. You can try cymbalta and ativan. They can help you to sleep and feel relieved. Find a good doctor who really listens to you and cares about your health with experience. Some doctors ignore side effects and make symptoms get worse and even develop panic attack.

Also check your thyroid condition as hypothyroidism can cause anxiety.

Eat well.

Hope you will feel better soon.

Prozac made me have really strong heart palipatations and made my anxiety worse, even after 6 months.

Even lowering the doseage didn't help.
It was just too energizing a drug for me.
