Efudex "improved Formula"??

I am scheduled to start Efudex Nov. 2 and am apprehensive based on a friend's bad experience and other things I've read. My Dr. said that things have improved dramatically within the last year with a better formula. He said I will use the cream twice daily for 5 days, then he will see me to place a neutralizer on my face, and then I will heal the 2nd week; reducing the experience from a 4 to 2 week timeframe. Has anyone else heard of this or experienced this?

Regarding the "neutralizer" comment, I've seen a lot of comments regarding the application of an antibacterial such as Bactroban/mupirocin along with a light corticosteroid to prevent infection and promote healing respectively post treatment.

I also doubt the "new formula" comment; the active ingredient (fluorouracil or 5-FU) is the same UNLESS your doctor has provided you with a 50/50 mix of fluorouracil and calcipotriol/calcipotriene. This is the new "Harvard Study" combo treatment which dramatically reduces treatment time and reaction severity while maintaining - possibly improving - efficacy.

What type of bad experience did your friend have?

As to an improved formula, that might be true, but the active ingredient that could cause any side effects remains the same, so the FDA still lists them as possibly including skin redness, flaking, itching, and peeling.

It isn't really a neutralizer that's used, per se, it's just a very good moisturizer, in most cases, to help prevent cracking, and bleeding, of the treated areas.
