I have been taking applying 5% Efudex cream for two days to my lip per my Dr. Orders. So far, I have had no swelling or any sign of side effects. Does this mean the spot on my lip is non-cancerous? I was under the impression I was to have swelling and pain, and that this cream kills everything allowing the good cells to regrow.

It contains the active ingredient fluorouracil, which is used to treat areas of skin that have been heavily exposed to the sun, or those that have been tested to have Basal Cell Carcinoma.

The FDA lists its typical side effects as possibly including skin redness, irritation, and flakiness.

Debby, how are you doing? Did it cause any pain?

Blisterboy, that doesn't necessarily mean it was non-cancerous. How are you doing now? Has there been any change?

I was told not to let my dog lick where I had applied the Efudex 5% cream because it is very poisonous! How long after I have applied it will the poisonous effect go away? Will Efudex 5% kill my dog?

Re: Sheri (# 5) Expand Referenced Message

I just finished 3 weeks of Efudex on primarily my nose and a small area on the side of my face. The pain is awful and ibuprofen a joke. In another time my guess would be that patients would actually be given something for the pain associated with the burning off of cancerous skin cells from the face. However, in this world of addiction we must suffer, and I mean truly suffer through the pain. My face is burnt and blistered. I’m always in pain. I’m tired and nauseous with no medical offer of relief. I had major foot reconstruction surgery 3 years ago that was less painful. I’m not trying to be negative, simply honest. The pain, swelling, and burning from Efudex is terrible.

No, this stuff will kill pets. They def say to keep your animals away from it. You can find a few references to this online.

Re: Sheri (# 5) Expand Referenced Message

I read somewhere that vitamin E from those 400mg GelCaps works, so I tried it and it's the best relief I've had.

I was told to use Dermalive - which is a light corticosteroid, generically called Desonide - AM and PM to aid healing and reduce inflammation. And although it provides some immediate relief from stinging, burning and tightness, it doesn't last very long and you aren't supposed to apply it more than twice a day (to your face, like most steroidal lotions).

The vitamin E oil provides literally hours of relief, especially in areas such as around the nose and ears, and makes it easier to move your mouth, etc. It's quite messy on your clothes, though it doesn't stain, and tends to rub off on your pillow at night which means you might end up reapplying it in the early hours if things get too uncomfortable.

I'm also taking a couple of the caps orally each day because, well, why not? Vitamin E is supposed to be generally good for your skin, so what's the harm?

Also, vitamin E is cheap compared to a lot of branded creams.

Other than that, for immediate, easy relief a cold wet flannel laid against your face works, but you can't really do if you're still applying Efudex until a couple of hours after application.

Thanks to whoever posted elsewhere about the vitamin E - it's kept me sane!

Re: Jo (# 8) Expand Referenced Message

I agree. Something for the pain would be extremely helpful. I have had bleeding ulcers and cannot take ibuprofen. Tylenol is a joke. I am not at risk for addiction. Whenever I have had surgery, I only took one or two pain pills. I sure could use some now.

Just for hygiene purposes, please don't let your dog lick your face during treatment. Your skin will probably be very raw and sensitive and susceptible to infection.
