Do Doctors Use Suboxone For Pain?
UpdatedI was just wondering if some doctors prescribe Suboxone for pain?

Most don't and from what I understand, insurance companies won't cover it for anything other than drug dependency issues. I have heard of a few people who have taken it for pain but its typically only prescribed for pain as a last resort because of other medical issues making the person unable to take anything else. Why are you trying to get on suboxone? Long term use of it for something like pain management is in my opinion a nastier habit to kick than regular opiates. The Dr Appts are very expensive and the withdrawal lasts months. If your concerned about taking opiates for pain I'd urge you to look into other alternatives. And if you're looking to get off of opiates for pain management just remember, suboxone is a synthetic opiate and shoul only be used for a short term detox, not a long term solution. I was on subs for 2 months back in 2008 and quit cold turkey relatively easily. This made me naive to the drug, so when I relapsed in 2010 I went back on subs for 3 years. I stopped taking it at a tiny piece a day. Less than a quarter pill and went through intense withdrawal for almost 2 weeks. I've been 42 days clean and still dealing with lingering withdrawals. I don't want to scare you, just want you to know what you could be possibly getting into. I'd rather kick standard pain killers any day over suboxone. It is a powerful drug and alot of people don't understand that. I took vicodin ES for dental work last winter, like 8 Vikes a day and still went through sub withdrawal and I had tapered down to 2 mgs by then. That's some scary stuff there. Most DRs still don't completely know what the long term affects are either. At least regular pain killers have been around for generations and they're pretty much understood. Just my opinion. Hope it helps!
Hi Pitt fan, thank you for the information. I've been on Suboxone for a few years now due to opiate addiction. But I also suffer from pain due to medical issues. I give you credit for getting off the Suboxone. Good luck to you!
I actually researched this for you to be able to give you a better answer concerning your situation. Pain Management Drs can prescribe suboxone for pain, but not typical Sub Drs. They are limited to addiction therapy only. Also, there is subutex, which is Bupe without the naxolone, which allows it to be more therapeutic for pain but from everything that I've read, most Drs are leery of prescribing it because it has a high potential for abuse. They commonly prescribe it for pregnant women who are in suboxone treatment because the naxolone can cause birth defects and the DEA monitors their scripts for subutex very closely. Hope that helps a little better. Good luck to you. Hope it all works out!
Hi Pitt fan, thank you for researching that. Now I understand it better. Best of luck to you!
Pitt-Am unable find pain dr. replace my 12yr dr. I lost & am high dose Opana er for 12 yrs. (before 2012 Oxycontin) New primary wrote one month but stated he CANNOT do more but will give me suboxone. I have mostly skeletal issues due to bone disease-broken arms, fused locked kneecaps sideways legs, severe fibro since 2000. from destructive yr long chemo-will suboxone work on this pain? I fast metabolizer of opiods why need high doses. Would subutex be better?? Withdrawal would kill me since my system is ravished from chemo plus yrs of agony there is weakened organs, systems everywhere. Suggestions?
Thank you-know nothing about this drug at all.(Am in FL if know dr??)
My doctor just prescribed Suboxone for my pain. She got it through insurance by saying i had opiod dependancy instead of opioid use disorder and it worked.
The oxycodone that i was on since 2008 was not working well at all anymore so i asked for these because they are also long lasting.
She did her research for me, consulted with sub specialists and was then able to prescribe for me
So far so good! I'm having much better pain relief with these. She started me 1st day at 2 mg strips every 12 hours. That was yesterday. She called to check in with me today. After listening to me describe my pain she said to go ahead with 4 mg. 2x a day now. Just took the 4 mg. and the pain relief is better than it's been in years.
