Difference Between Opana And Oxycontin

Updated

I have MS and need pain relief. I don't like the stigma oxycontin has to it. I simply don't find it helpful. Is Opana a good substitute? I take 5 mg of oxycodone for breakthrough pain but sometimes it is not enough. If I don't deal with the pain appropriately I get sicker and more fatigue. I am not familiar with narcotics at all. I will admit a fear of them. Any answers please.

BEEN ON OPANA AND THE ER FOR ABOUT 10 MONTHS NOW. I LIKE IT. DOESN'T SEEM TO MAKE YOU SLEEPY AFTER THE 2nd DAY. MY PAIN LEVEL STAY AT ABOUT A 3 TO A 6 NOW WHEN IT WAS A 10.

I have herniated disks in my t-spine and have tried almost everything out there. I started on 20 mg 2 times a day but it didn't last long enough, so I switched to 10 mg 3 times a day which gave me better coverage. However, Opana is expensive and the side effects are going to cause me to change again. I have experience extreme weakness and unusual tiredness. Everything I do is a struggle because I am so weak. I also have experience blurred vision at a distand and difficulty reading small print up close. Further, I have difficultly taking deep breathes, which makes relaxation techniques difficult. Not worth it for me.

Don't be afraid of anything except addiction cause that's all there is to it. Opana is definitely not as strong as oxycontin. But it works, it does not catch you a buzz either like an oxy would.

Opana has the side affects simalar to morphine, the tiredness, the bad sleep. To me, it is just another expensive pill. Oxicodone is the best because it relives the pain, but does not make one real drowsy. stay away from ALL opiats if you can. The rtoad back is slim, not many make it.

Opana er will stop your pain but oxycontin will make you feel better. Opana er will only make you sleepy with no high whatsoever. It contains Narcan which reverses the opiate effect. This means you cant get a high off of it like you ca oxycontin. Opana er will make you bad sleepy. Thats all i wanted to do is sleep all the time on opana er. Thats why i had my doc change me to oxycontin.

The first post was from a person who is suffering from MS! They are not looking for a buzz!! You should seriously think about changing your little nickname....it's not cute.....pill-popping idiots like you are making it SO difficult for the REAL patients to get the treatment they need. Try walking in the shoes of a person that suffers from MS.....to all the junkies on this site: GO AWAY. there are REAL people on here with REAL problems and they don't need to see your stupid little comments about getting high and what pills are stronger and how to shoot them up.....grow up and get help. You never know, you could be the one suffering from MS one day....

Most of the people who have responded to this post seem to think that the "buzz" is important. When you're trying to treat real pain the "buzz" is the last thing on the patients mind. Only a junkie would worry about such things. This site is for people with REAL medical issues. They are simply looking for good advice that may make their quality of life a bit better.

I'm.so happy someone spoke up to those fools looking for a buzz. I was on oxycontin 60 mg for rsd I was doing well on them. Then they reformulated it and it stopped working right away. Over last few months been trying to get someone to listen even reported to FDA. My last appt they offered to up my oxycontin to 80 mg I said why bother they r all reformulated so every time my pain went up so did my BP to point they wanted to give drug for that. Finally six mo later I get opana er 40 mg take two twice a day I asked why so much she said they r not as strong so I agreed tons two wk trial. It takes some pain away but not long enough. Now when I go back next wk I don't know what to say or ask for. Neway that's What doc told me. Hope it helps. It does make u sleepy but that foes away when body ajuusts to it. And the new oxycontin labeled op has narcan also. Stop using them for pleasure so all of us pain get treatment right away And w right meds instead of doc having to get to know u better before helping us. So go on ur way And don't give advice on meds when u don't have a clue as to what u say. Thank God those of us in real pain not looking for a buzz that read ur posts w no medical knowledge just junky knowledge. Know better than to listen to u. Drs have rules to follow - one is take pain seriously and treat it. Best wishes u get right meds its trial and error. We have to try everything out there till we find what. We all react differently than another. So opana er may work for u and oxycontin for someone else.

Thank you Sarah!!! As someone with Psoriatic Arthritis & fibromyalgia for almost 20 years, it absolutely disgusts me to hear these idiots comparing the quality of the "buzz" for different pain meds. My ankylosing spondylitis has been flaring lately, making it impossible for me to sit to stand. My doctor started me on Opana ER, 10 mg, 1 every 12 hours, and I can not believe the difference it has made in my pain. I am not pain free, but I never will be. The only problem I've had is breakthrough pain, so I will go back this week for an adjustment. But other than that, after being on pretty much everything for pain relief, this stuff is great. After 2 days I just noticed a great diminishment of my pain, without being sleepy or "high". I have a 4 year old, and if it's going to impair me in anyway I am not going to take it. So thank you Sarah for speaking up for chronic pain patients looking for relief. Thank you to all the drug-seekers for your advice on what to take for a "buzz"; I now know what not to take. Truly it is people like you who make it impossible for chronic pain patients to be treated with respect for trying to gain relief and function.

MS: Sheryl, I am sorry to hear of your suffering. I have a dear friend with MS, and she's started taking something called LDN, low dose naltrexone. I took it for a few months for my fibromyalgia and it made a tremendous difference in my pain, except for my arthritic pain which now seems to have flared and is why I am taking the Opana ER. The LDN websites have alot of info regarding the use of this medication and amazing stories of patients with MS who've done 180 degree turn arounds. Never hurts to look! Best of luck to you in your search for relief. God bless!

You guys getting out here buying this opana that is not prescribed for you and thinking you are not getting a "buzz" because you aren't getting the "sleepy affect" then turning around and mixing it with xanax and alcohol and God knows what else is why you are ending up in our ER's overdosing and DEAD!!! Wake up people! If a medication is NOT prescribed for you then you should not be taking it...you might not wake up one day!! And for what? A "buzz"? Is it really worth it?

Re: dennis (# 9) Expand Referenced Message

I pray every day they come up with 1 pain med actually takes away most or all of my pain, to not put me thru god awful debilitating withdrawal sickness, not feeling high, buzzed or addicted. Just one day without debilitating chronic pain and not worry if I got enough to get me thru my work week. That's what I pray for. Those who don't suffer will never understand. Just saying.

Your quality of life is far more important than stigma or what people think. Diacetymorphine is pharmaceutical grade Heroin and is invaluable for terminal illness. You take what you find works, others opinions have no bearing. Cannabis had a stigma, now studies are proving politicians held a very helpful substance from the public for years. Forget stigma. Improve your life.

Exactly. I suffer from severe RA, osteoarthritis and fibromalagia combined with scizzoeffective, chronic depression and anxiety, introvert and PTSD. I ask for my pain medication to be taken away from me bc of junkies that tend to watch people in pharmacy for people tgey suspect of using opiates and get their leads from people and follow them from pharmacy and if your lucky your vehicle will get broke into and pills stolen before they flow you home. My pain meds were stolen twice with police report made. Last theft was from my home and I'm not putting my aging mother I take care of that lives in my home in danger of these druggies breaking in or us walk in during process of looking for drugs. They found my floor safe and got it open. So I live in pain just to stay safe.

I have been on Opana ER at different doses at different times, i.e. Before back surgery. I have none of the symptoms that I'm reading about. It takes care of my pain without any drowsiness or feeling of being high. It has allowed me to have some quality of life that I didn't have before taking this. I tried OxyContin but that made me sick, my body could not process it properly.
However the makers of Opana ER have been asked by the FDA to stop making them and they are going to hone that request.

Hurting 24 7, You've practically described everything I've experienced in the last 20 years. From doctors that initially didn't think I needed medication for my pain to doctors that are more concerned that I'll get addicted. I have Fibromyalgia, Psoriatic Arthritis, Osteoarthritis, and Chronic Lyme's Disease since 1995. The Lyme's triggered everything else in my opinion. I've had to put up with more crap from doctors than I care to think about. Most of the time my pain isn't managed well because doctors simply won't prescribe what's necessary for me to have quality of life. Thanks to the *****s that are abusing medications we all are having a hard time staying comfortable.

My opinion was always like yours that I wouldn't wish this pain on anyone. However, I've had a change of heart recently. I would like for the people who are responsible for opiate prescribing limitations to feel our pain for a while. Not just a day, but for maybe a few years. Then they could thank themselves for not having pain medication so they can get through the day. In the meantime I stay strong and always keep a positive attitude. I don't whine about hurting all the time. In fact most of the time nobody is aware I'm in pain at all. I refuse to let these diseases take over my life so I'll keep searching for answers. Thanks for your post.

Thank you Sarah, because I am one of those chronic pain sufferers. I had a tumor removed and during the surgery my nerves was severed. I have delt with chronic pain 15 years and have been insulted and degraded because I am constantly treated like a drug seeker. I raised a family and worked a full time job all during this time. I have chosen to have quality over quantity but every so many years I come upon a doctor who says I'm over medicated and there are other options. I always welcome new ideas and new method but I have found through all the trials and experiments that the medication dulls the pain the most. I am reminded that the focus is on the abuser and the opiate epidemic. Who is advocating for me??

once again being taken off of a medication, Opana ER and being put on something new. I have had success with my dosage of Opana, Percocet and Lyrica. Due to the law changing I once again have to go thru an adjustment period and they are usually painful and my life turned upside down and inside out until we come up with the right combination.

My two cents is please people if you must self destruct, find something that doesn't effect those of us already suffering. My ultimate wish is that you beat the addiction all together but I wouldn't wish this pain on my worst enemy

Shortytlk, I've also been in pain for many years due to Fibromyalgia, and Psoriatic Arthritis. The only difference being I had active psoriasis for less than a year, but still bear the scars on my knees and elbows. My doctor said I'm in a small percentage of people that has pain that goes with Psoriatic Arthritis, and that's it. No further psoriasis. I consider myself lucky, and grab whatever blessings I can. My Fibromyalgia didn't begin until after I was bitten by a tic infected with Lyme's Disease in 1995. Yes, i got it also, and ran I fever for almost 2 months. I was 31 years old then, but that tick kicked my butt. I'm still paying the price. I actually had a Rheumatologist tell me there aren't ticks in Oklahoma that carry Lyme's. I was dumbstruck, while wishing I had my lab report from 20 years earlier. I didn't argue, but I did walk out. No sense wasting my time if he already was calling me a lier. If you spend anytime outdoors people, please use tick repellent with Deat. Prayers for everyone suffering. I hope you have a blessed day.

Well said Sara. I'm new to this thread so when I read the comment explaining which pill will make you feel high, I was offended. I've been in pain and awake all night, and this fool is only wanting to feel high. I have to all but jump through hoops for my prescription each month thanks to narcotics abusers like that. I really think some day it will all catch up with each and every one of them. In the meantime we all have to keep our chins up, and push through the pain. No fun I know, but that's the hand we've been dealt. Speaking for myself, I try to stay positive every day. I've been through the depressing pity party many years ago. I sank to a very dark place, and have no intention of doing it again. Prayers to all of you.

For Fibromyalgia my doctor has me on Fetzima ER 120 mg daily and then I am on Opana 4X a day. They also can use Marinol with that as well. Don't give up. There are some really good pain management doctors with PhD's in pharmacology that can help people like us. I've had 4 back surgeries and have been diagnosed with centralized sensitization syndrome for pain relief is hard for me.

Yes. I've been on oxy 40 mgs and 20 mgs for breakthrough. I'm now on Opana 80 mg × twice daily and oxycodone 10 mg × 3 daily for breakthrough. I do however feel as if what I take for breakthrough should be increased. Our body builds a tikerance
