Difference Between Adderall And Amphetamine Salts (Page 5)
(Newest replies first)

Updated

I was recently diagnosed with Adult ADD and have been prescribed Amphetamine Salts (Generic for Adderall) for a few months now. The initial dosage was one 10mg tablet/ three times a day and recently my Doctor upped the dosage to one 30mg tablet/ twice a day. I know that overall this has been very beneficial for me but I cant help but wonder if the generic brand (IR Amphetamine Salts) has less of the active ingredient, and more unnecessary side effects(irritability, fatigue). I know that while the active ingredients are likely to be the same, the "fillers" usually are not and even the active ingredients can vary up to 10%. I also know that everybody reacts differently depending on their bodies' make-up as well as the drugs and I have always reacted sensitively to any kind of drug. The more I "google" the more I want to stay away from the generic form. Also- almost every pharmacy around has little to no Adderall Brand IR tablets in stock, they only have the generic brands and possibly Adderall brand but only the Extended-Release. My Doctor seems to firmly believe that there is no difference between Adderall XR and Adderall IR, and because she prescribed me the generic form (Amphetamine Salts), she probably doesn't see a difference there either. I don't have the time to ask 10 doctors what they think so if anyone has any information or experiences please share! Thank you!

My prescription usually reads Amphetamine Salts and this month it is Dextroamphetamine + Amphetamine. I take 20 mg 2x a day. This new version is not working as well. I am groggy and have serious anxiety. What is the difference?

I'm right there with u buddy... having bipolar requires ssris to work differently and that's mainly in a differential and difficult manner that's not very good because of all the side effects. If taking it properly and as prescribed I believe everyone on the planet could benefit from Adderall provided they see a doctor first. You have to lie and say you need two everyday as you can't concentrate, battle for your schedule, etc, and you don't want to see how the doctor is by asking for the biggest amount. See what he offers because he's going to be the one that's going to be in control and responsible if something happens. I digress. All I'm saying is call ahead of time. Don't go to get anything but pills that are pink baby corepharma, ideally a new bottle... In 2017 it's the only way to go... Search don't settle... You'll hate every moment knowing u got tevas and they suck so badly.

I have had trouble with tablets. Can't take pink, but could take the Orange 20mg.by Teva. I now take 20 mg 3x a day. AdderallXR. The pharmacy was having trouble getting the tabs I took for years. I don't like XR as well. I can control the dosage better with tabs. Sometimes I have to tweek how much I take. Sometimes it is too strong and I have trouble sleeping. Also stress effects my dosage. I get irritable if I take so much. I have had trouble getting the meds lately. XR. My regular pharmacy has them on backorder for 2 months. I do not drive without them. Calling around they don't like to give you it over the phone. Very frustrating. My insurance only pays for generic usually. Yes they have different fillers. Depends on the brand. Sandoz, Teva, Shire are some of the brands that make them. You should be able to get some answers from your doctor. I use what works and have for 10 years. It can be hit and miss. If you have problems talk to your doctor if you can't handle the meds. I have ADD as well and am Bipolar II, so I take a handful of pills and you have to find what works best for you. It is really hard to deal with changes. Some my body cannot tolerate.

No don't put him on medications until he is 18. He will get addicted to it and it will be downhill from there. That is what happened to me. I refused to treat my child with medication until his body has matured, at 18yrs old. Instead I've hired a tutor to help him be organized and help him with his schoolwork and it has done wonders.
Also I put him sports after school to get him to relax and let loose. And things like yoga and meditation exercises. And a therapist just in case he feels he needs someone to talk to but not feel embarrassed about it and to learn to cope from a specialist. When he turns 18 I'll educate him about the medication and if he feels he needs I'll get him the prescription. It's been 5 years and he's happy healthy and doing very very well at school, all As and in sports, a top player/ trophies in many sports and his therapist says he is doing very well.
But if he feels at 18 he needs medication (after educating himself about its uses and side effects) then it will be his decision. Hopefully he will have learnt how to cope without medication by then.

I feel the same way, it's terrible. I am a student going through school and I was diagnosed ADD and was prescribed Aderall. My grades came up, I had more energy, and I could finally think strait. They recently have replaced it with Amphetamine salts, and I felt worse than before. I can't focus, I get headaches, I can't even read, and I am always feeling hungry. Would these be side effects or me going through some sort of withdrawal?

74 years old. 30+ years on Xanax (.5 to 1mg bid) and several months on amphetamine salts (20 mg bid). I would only increase my Xanax under
"Crisis" circumstances because it still relaxes me enough to go to sleep. The amphetamine salts get me up and going bc I would happily spend all day watching TV or reading). Supposed to take x2 daily but if 20 mg will give me the initiative to get out of pjs and move, that's all I need.
As for the woman taking 8 mg Xanax today, it sounds like you have little benefits from it since most people wouldn't wake up for 2 or 3 days with a dose like that and your jumping all over this lady who was expressing her opinion like everyone else on here. Most people believe in some kind of God and perhaps He could help you better than any pill. Just a thought.... 25 years as a psych and hospice nurse I have never ever given a dose like that to the most terrified or even psychotic person.

Adderall has helped me the last 10 years along with the other drugs I take for Bipolar Disorder. It has not had a detrimental effect on me. It has helped me with ADD. You are unwise to say it does not help people. Try having the disorder I have. It helps also with depression. This may be your opinion but I do not abuse it. I sometimes take less than prescribed. Not all drugs are bad. Call me a junkie if you want but you are badly mistaken. Some days I would not be able to function without it. There are no harmful side effects if you don't take it like some of the other drugs I take.

This is a prejudicial response from someone who has never raised children with ADHD. I have a doctorate in clinical psychology and certainly understand concerns about medications. To say a child should never take Adderall for ADHD is like saying a child with a severely painful disease should never take pain medication that adults abuse. I have seen repeated problems with inconsistencies and poor performance with generics from Indian pharmacies like Aurobunda and always suggest brand names.

You need to ask these questions to a Pharmacist. Docs tend to play 'catch-up" with all the meds that keep coming out. Find two or three Pharmacists around town that you feel good talking to...and make the rounds when you have such questions. I know, one more BIG Bother.....

For years I have tried understanding "why"? I have so many side effects that are extremely bad with medications, and including some vitamins and supplements that makes me feel a nauseas even when taken with meals.
I began investigating after years of being talked down too by pharmacists and Dr.s like what I was saying didn't make sense, or I am " the first" to ever complain about a generic medication.
This is what I suggest may want to consider, after what a "good Dr." who cared enough to help me find out why. Go have an alergy test done ASAP. You may find out that it is the fillers and binders that is causing your illness from the medications, foods, and environment. Look up and read what the inactive ingredients are and what are the side effects. One of the ingredients is micro crystalline cellulose in a generic Adderal that is a refined pulp wood used as a textorizer and can cause irregular heart beat, lack of energy, headache and depression, even hair loss.
Another was Lactose monohydrate and I am lactose intolerant. I could go on and on but you need to investigate the fillers and binders in the generic. They are "cheap" is "ONE" reason why you pay less for generic.
You need to know what allergies you have in order to find the a medication that won't make your illness even worse because of fillers and binders.

First time on these threads and I have to say, you stating that THEIR writing is ignorant simply because of their OPINION AND EXPERIENCE differs from others is INAPPROPRIATE!!!! AND hypocritical! Who do you think you all are!? You are not the only INTOLERANT person here, either....it appears a whole gang warfare experience because one woman (who has every right to express opinion WITHOUT BEING ATTACKED FOR IT SIMPLY BECAUSE IT DOES NOT AGREE WITH YOU OR YOUR EXPERIENCE). Everyone is entitled to their opinion and reflection of experience! You and many posters here IMO have name called and categorized and generalized far worse than the person you all ATTACKED. As it appears, if a person doesn't agree with YOURS you all slam the poster!!?? VERY VERY BAD IMO! AGAIN, WHO DO YOU THINK YOU ARE TO JUDGE WHOSE POSTS ARE VALUABLE AND WHOSE POSTS ARE NOT?!

I read her entire post and she did not state the word "stupid" while referring to ANYONE. She is a scapegoat simply because you all do not agree with her OPINION. I appreciate ALL OPINIONS on threads, and one should NOT be discriminated against simpky because THEIR experience and OPINION does not agree with YOURS!
Further, making things up about what someone states is SLANDER.
