Difference Between Adderall And Amphetamine Salts (Page 13) (Top voted first)

Updated

I was recently diagnosed with Adult ADD and have been prescribed Amphetamine Salts (Generic for Adderall) for a few months now. The initial dosage was one 10mg tablet/ three times a day and recently my Doctor upped the dosage to one 30mg tablet/ twice a day. I know that overall this has been very beneficial for me but I cant help but wonder if the generic brand (IR Amphetamine Salts) has less of the active ingredient, and more unnecessary side effects(irritability, fatigue). I know that while the active ingredients are likely to be the same, the "fillers" usually are not and even the active ingredients can vary up to 10%. I also know that everybody reacts differently depending on their bodies' make-up as well as the drugs and I have always reacted sensitively to any kind of drug. The more I "google" the more I want to stay away from the generic form. Also- almost every pharmacy around has little to no Adderall Brand IR tablets in stock, they only have the generic brands and possibly Adderall brand but only the Extended-Release. My Doctor seems to firmly believe that there is no difference between Adderall XR and Adderall IR, and because she prescribed me the generic form (Amphetamine Salts), she probably doesn't see a difference there either. I don't have the time to ask 10 doctors what they think so if anyone has any information or experiences please share! Thank you!

Hi, I actually prefer the generic. It honestly works better for me.

Mandi, thank you for posting your comment & I hope people take the time to read & understand it. I am only 10 years younger than you at 46 but still of a generation where ADD/ADHD were not common diagnosis given & certainly not a lot of meds and/or therapies were described 30 years ago. I think of how much better I would have done in school & enjoyed being in school by high school, when after hitting puberty my ADHD really began to take on a life of its own. I am still grateful to this day I had enough friends & supportive & structured enough home/family life to have been able to stick it out & complete highschool & go on to even just community college. I knew I just never really felt "right" & was continually frustrated to see my friends do things so easily that I seemed to struggle with, though I was not at all any less intelligent or creative than they. Once I hit 14-15 & like most young teens started going to parties & experimenting with alcohol & marijuana for the first time, I felt like I had found the Holy Grail. Not so much smoking pot, but alcohol was a different story. It took away way my many anxieties, sadness, insecurities, and made me feel I way I really liked because it was a relief to get a temporary reprieve from feeling the way I walked around feeling every day. Fast forward to mid 20s & having good jobs & health insurance so then started therapy & the trial & error game with antidepressants began - and like you, I never really found relief, but did find myself "numbed" enough to become indifferent to things, so they were always more of an escape then a cure, making these antidepressants, for me, no different then the various street/recreational drugs I had begun to experiment with. It was only by getting sober in 2006 that I was able to start attacking the problem from another angle, and it was still no picnic because I no longer had a crutch. By August 2011 at age 40 I was finally diagnosed ADHD & prescribed Adderall for the first time. I had never had this prior to then so it was new to me. Almost 6 years later & several tweaks and changes with Adderall & I am so much closer to being who I feel is the best or at least better version of me! ADHD really IS a mental/psychiatric disorder that needs to be taken seriously.

Thanks for input all. ADHD can be most frustrating. I was ecstatic when diagnosed. Sounds crazy I know. Not half as crazy as lacking focus due to 10 million things on my mind always! Up to the individual to choose how best to cope. I think adderall is a miracle med if used as intended. Irritates me when referred to as "legal speed". If that's the case, why dont methamphetamine addicts switch up? Spare the legal woes. Am I being a bit touchy? I find the comment ignorant. ADHD friends. Use the impairment to your advantage. It can be positive vs negative.

I read her entire post and she did not state the word "stupid" while referring to ANYONE. She is a scapegoat simply because you all do not agree with her OPINION. I appreciate ALL OPINIONS on threads, and one should NOT be discriminated against simpky because THEIR experience and OPINION does not agree with YOURS!
Further, making things up about what someone states is SLANDER.

First time on these threads and I have to say, you stating that THEIR writing is ignorant simply because of their OPINION AND EXPERIENCE differs from others is INAPPROPRIATE!!!! AND hypocritical! Who do you think you all are!? You are not the only INTOLERANT person here, either....it appears a whole gang warfare experience because one woman (who has every right to express opinion WITHOUT BEING ATTACKED FOR IT SIMPLY BECAUSE IT DOES NOT AGREE WITH YOU OR YOUR EXPERIENCE). Everyone is entitled to their opinion and reflection of experience! You and many posters here IMO have name called and categorized and generalized far worse than the person you all ATTACKED. As it appears, if a person doesn't agree with YOURS you all slam the poster!!?? VERY VERY BAD IMO! AGAIN, WHO DO YOU THINK YOU ARE TO JUDGE WHOSE POSTS ARE VALUABLE AND WHOSE POSTS ARE NOT?!

Adderall has helped me the last 10 years along with the other drugs I take for Bipolar Disorder. It has not had a detrimental effect on me. It has helped me with ADD. You are unwise to say it does not help people. Try having the disorder I have. It helps also with depression. This may be your opinion but I do not abuse it. I sometimes take less than prescribed. Not all drugs are bad. Call me a junkie if you want but you are badly mistaken. Some days I would not be able to function without it. There are no harmful side effects if you don't take it like some of the other drugs I take.

I have had trouble with tablets. Can't take pink, but could take the Orange 20mg.by Teva. I now take 20 mg 3x a day. AdderallXR. The pharmacy was having trouble getting the tabs I took for years. I don't like XR as well. I can control the dosage better with tabs. Sometimes I have to tweek how much I take. Sometimes it is too strong and I have trouble sleeping. Also stress effects my dosage. I get irritable if I take so much. I have had trouble getting the meds lately. XR. My regular pharmacy has them on backorder for 2 months. I do not drive without them. Calling around they don't like to give you it over the phone. Very frustrating. My insurance only pays for generic usually. Yes they have different fillers. Depends on the brand. Sandoz, Teva, Shire are some of the brands that make them. You should be able to get some answers from your doctor. I use what works and have for 10 years. It can be hit and miss. If you have problems talk to your doctor if you can't handle the meds. I have ADD as well and am Bipolar II, so I take a handful of pills and you have to find what works best for you. It is really hard to deal with changes. Some my body cannot tolerate.

What is the difference between Adderall Salt and Amphetamine/Dextroamphetamine? I am 45 and have been on Adderall for ADD since College (to say the least a very long time). Today when I went to get my script filled (I normally take 20 milligrams of generic Adderall - which is the combination salts) I received these other pills which are listed above that make me extremely nauseous and I don't feel the same, have a lack of focus, etc. I even went back up to the pharmacist and asked him if they're the same thing and he stated they are. Is that correct? Thank you so much for any help anyone can give me. God bless!

Teva oranges are the only ones I can find in my state (Georgia). Every single pharmacy has Teva. Unfortunately for me, they make me very sick and I've been searching for a better alternative.

Teva is terrible, plain and simple. I have tripled my dosage on Teva and it still doesn't compare to a single Sandoz pill.

Hi.. If the Doctor hasn't taken this med then the Doctor wouldn't know. Clearly the Doctor knows that fillers alone can change the delivery of any med from name to generic just from the company it's made from. Also the % of the work I g ingredient in the name as the generic. It's been a complaint for some. As with anything each of us can have a different experience. Some pharmacies may order it for you. Insurance is another issue.the cost can be a couple hundred dollars more just for the actual brand.

But I promise you, Sandoz no longer is effactive now either. I am in such a miserable, depressed, and one of the lowest points of my life right now. I've been LEGALLY prescribed Adderall IR 30mgs for 18 years. For the past 2 years is when I noticed the biggest change in ALL GENERIC formulations. ALL were changing and become less effective. My doctor does believe me because he has has said MANY of his patients are going through this and making this aware to him. Hoswever, he doesn't take the medication himself, and has no idea what is going to be the next plan of action to get us all moving in a good direction once again. That is why these post/replies with USEFUL comments, from those who are really experienced with the USE of these medications, are very beneficial. We obviously need to do the research ourselves. I just hope that soon, I can get back to being motivated, focused, and useful- not only in my own life, but to those who heavily depend on me to take care of them. I wish you all the best as well. Hopefully, soon, we will all be able to once again wake up and take our medication with the confidence that we once had and just be able to look forward to each new day!

Re: Margarita (# 2) Expand Referenced Message

HYPERBOLE, not "Hyperbolie”.... When one's comment is riddled with incorrect spelling and is somewhat lacking grammatically, one should probably spend a little more time focusing on ONESELF, as opposed to (and I mean this metaphorically, not to be mistaken for hyperbolically) wading through the crowd, proudly waving the "flag of blatant ignorance" in prose... Just a thought.

Are you on the XR? I was put on the XR and had 2 issues. First the prescription cost me 337.00 dollars. Second my body metabolized it in around 4 hours. I told the Dr and was changed to Adderall IR (Amphetamine Salts). They work well and last 4-5 hours per dose and I filled 60 for 37.00. Good all around.

Re: Margarita (# 2) Expand Referenced Message

Excuse me. You are putting me among others in a league with drug addicts. You should be ashamed of your pretentiousness. "I know more than you Kido" HA! I'm sorry but do you have extreme ADD or ADHD? Or is it just stupidity that you suffer from?

Re: Margarita (# 2) Expand Referenced Message

Adderall is nothing compared to Nuvigil. I finished up my Nuvigil prescription too soon, so I took some Adderall and all it has done is keep me from sleeping. So if you want to get a script from your doctor thinking that it will be like methamphetamine you're wrong and if anyone has taken Nuvigil then you know what I’m talking about.
