Diet Drug

Hello, I hope this is not too long but I would like to share my experience and knowledge with you. I wanted to loose weight and was prescribed a diet drug known by the names MERIDIA, REDUCTIL, SIBUTREX, SIBUTRAMINE AND SIBUTRAMINE HYDROCHLORIDE. At the time I was in a lawyer in a high pressure area, successful, enthusiastic, fit and rather conservative in nature. I did not know that this drug was structurally related to AMPHETAMINES ("New Drugs". Australian Prescriber 25 (1): 22. 2002).

The taking of this drug resulted in me becoming MANIC, irrational, impulsive and a large risk taker. I felt euphoric, full of energy and somewhat indestructible. I developed major insomnia needing sleeping pills to get some sleep. I didn’t realise what I was doing and regret many many things.

When I stopped taking the drug I developed severe problems with my memory, became extremely dizzy, confused and had difficulties communicating and concentrating. Those problems substantially worsened and I was diagnosed with MAJOR DEPRESSION and GENERAL ANXIETY DISORDER. Over the following months and years I was prescribed a myriad of anti-depressants, tricyclics, anti-psychotics, benzodiazepines, sleeping tablets, etc.

I had become lethargic, crippled and bed ridden. I lay in bed looking at the wall curled up in the foetal position for hours on end. Basic hygiene became an enormous challenge. I couldn’t eat and lost a lot of weight. I found it increasingly difficult to leave the house. At times I was paralysed unable to move my limbs or lift myself out of bed. My thoughts became increasingly psychotic, extremely dark contemplating SUICIDE. I isolated myself from family, friends and work colleagues. I have hardly worked in years and now find my career and life is in tatters.

These symptoms are identical to those experienced by a person who abruptly discontinued AMPHETAMINES, selective serotonin re-uptake inhibitors (SSRIís), serotonin-norepinephrine reuptake inhibitors (SNRIís) or serotonin-norepinephrine-dopamine reuptake inhibitors (SNDRIís). I suffered major drug withdrawal, discontinuation syndrome, cessation syndrome. MERIDIA (SIBUTRAMINE) IS A SEROTONIN-NOREPINEPHRINE REUPTAKE INHIBITOR (SNRI) STRUCTURALLY RELATED TO AMPHETAMINES.

I now sufferer a myriad of problems including memory, cognition, concentration, lethargy, headaches, dizziness, light-headedness when sitting or standing. I have extremely loud excruciating buzzing in my ears 24/7. My vision is a strange type of blurriness and stars even after getting new glasses to try and correct it. I feel like a rope is tied around my brain pulling me back, not headaches. Dry mouth, shaking, insomnia, nausea and upper part of left leg numb from as spasm soon after stopping Reductil. I have a slight numbness on my extremities mainly noticeable on my finger tips. I am easily agitated, over-reacting to situations, anger. My jaw is sore from tension.

My speech seems to be stilted and I continually loose my train of thought like can’t get my brain straight. I have to make notes about nearly everything I have to do or I’ll forget. I have chunks of memory missing. I get confused when driving, lost, loose concentration, bump median strips and garage doors.

At times I have forgotten where I parked car, bank pin numbers, phone numbers including my own and my address. I have isolated myself from family, friends and work colleagues, have hardly worked since that time. I just manage to do the bare minimum with a struggle.

Most days I lay in bed all day and night. I go to kitchen to get food and take it back to bed. I have the windows closed and curtains drawn. Everything I do is a struggle. I don’t check the mail box, shower or shave unless I have to go out. I was a very social person now I’m a recluse. I do not get any pleasurable sensations from anything. It’s like my brain is completely devoid of all chemicals which enable you to experience pleasure. I can recognise it is a beautiful day but can’t experience the pleasurable feeling. I used to be the life of the party, good sense of humour and often asked to be master of ceremonies and give speeches.

As you can see my life has been totally destroyed by taking this drug. I wanted to share my experience to help others who may be thinking of taking this drug. I would like to find anyone who may have suffered similarly to me.

Many people who have taken this drug have DIED from HEART ATTACKS and STROKES. The drug has been taken off the market in most countries. The manufacturers have already been successfully sued from $$$ millions of dollars. If enough people could be located who suffered similarly to me then a class-action law suit could be mounted.

I am very happy I came across your post, as I was looking to go beg my doctor to prescribe this for me. I have taken Phentermine in the past and it worked miracles. I desperately need to lose weight, and trust me, I have dieted, exercised, and tried nearly everything and continue to watch what I eat and make sure I move. I am not looking for the easy way out, I am just looking for a way.
I now know that this isn't going to be it. I refuse to go through what you've described and I hope and pray that you will be healed soon. Thank you for posting your experience, as it has helped deter me (and I'm sure others) from seeking out this drug.
