Can You Take Benzos While You're On Suboxone? (Page 9) (Top voted first)

Updated

I've been seeing a lot of posts regarding taking benzos while on Suboxone. It is ok to take a benzo w/ suboxone - as long as you're taking the prescribed dosages you'll be fine. Now if you're taking 3 or 4 8mgs of Suboxone and say 5 or 6 Xanax that's not good, that's where the reported deaths have come from. I've been on Subs for 5 yrs. I've also been subscribed klonopin and am currently taking valium w/ it and it's fine. I'm on a low dose and only take what I am prescribed.

Niele,

Yes, and I repeat, yes you CAN take Benzos safely with Suboxone. I currently see a Psychologist in Addiction Medicine, and although extremely high doses of Benzos with Sub "can" lead to respiratory depression, it's not common. I've been on Subutex and Klonopin for years without issue.

The Naloxone in Sub is clinically insignificant- it's there as a deterrent to prevent IV usage. Again, it's clinically insignificant.

So please don't mislead those who take responsible dosages of Benzos with Sub.

Yes there are Sub doctors who frown upon it indeed. But we shouldn't quantify ALL Sub doctors in that category.

Taken responsibly, under a physicians care, and you'll be fine.

I've been on Subs since 2009 (8mgs) and 4mgs of Klonopin this entire time- I've had no I'll side effects.

Please don't make "blanket statements". They're misleading and misinformed.

Best regards,

Well, it's not a contest, okay?... sure you "can." I "could" be prescribed an extremely low dose of Suboxone for a very short time for treatment resistant depression. It "could" be almost 3 months off the stuff and i "could" still "be" in withdrawals. My POINT which you obviously missed because you are too busy defending your drug use, is these medications are DANGEROUS & there are no studies on their long term use. Don't be mad at me; I'm a victim too.

And the don't make blanket statements part:

"Naloxone is clinically insignificant."

Look that one up. There's a lil bit about that one actually. Or no! Do a field study-get yourself a shot of Vivitrol. Then tell me about insignificant; my 30 day shot of the Devils semen lasted over 6 months.

Hey, I bet you can't stuff 12 jelly beans up your nose!

I'm not going to argue with you.

Physician on top of physician has told me Naloxone is CLINICALLY INSIGNIFICANT! AGAIN, it's basically there to deter from IV Sub use.

Believe me, don't believe me. Either way, it's a waste of time arguing with you.

And it's proven even more so by your ignorant statement at the end.

Get lost. Better yet, keep advising patients the wrong information. That will get you far.

Hopefully, more intelligent members will be online soon. At least they've been a pleasure helping and having mature dialogues with.

You're certainly entitled to your opinion. And that's ALL I'll say on the matter.

Riddance,

Yes!
gkedz, you are 100% right! From now on I listen solely to you, as should everyone! Now, should we consult you before or after you take all your meds? I mean, is there a better time....

I'm merely advising of my own experiences here. My doctor (psychologist in Addiction Medicine) prescribes me both.

The problem does lie in the fact that many get their combo of meds from different doctors. All of whom are unaware of their intake.

I'm no physician- just speaking upon years of experience.

I'm not asking YOU to listen and agree 100%!

I'm glad you calmed down. Why do you want to throw so much personal power, at a complete stranger? Don't let people "troll" you. I'm not sayin I did, but I TOTALLY could have.

I was on Vicoden ES for 12 yrs!!! I decided it was time for me to stop and my doc put me on Suboxene strips. I have to say that honestly, I would have never been able to stop on my own because of withdrawel. Anyone who is having a problem with drugs, regardless of which one, its important to speak to your doctor. For me, Suboxene was a life saver.I've had NO side effects from it. I have not had any pain meds in 3 yrs, 7, months and 15 days!!!

First I would like to say thanks for the info!! I'd take ur advise before a doctor just because of the experience. I have a severe leg injury right now and it got infected the doc put me on Percocet and Ciprofloxacn and was told to take the antibiotic with food. When I told the doctor I don't eat breakfast or lunch and only dinner he told me to take the Ciprofloxacn with a glass of milk. When I returned to the doc 4 days later and had no progress he extended the Ciprofloxacn for another week and gave me more Percocet. While getting it filled I talked to the pharmacist about the antibiotic and giving me the "runs" and told me how to take it properly and I quote home "this sounds rude but doctors know nothing about medicine and the reason why my leg wasn't getting better was because milk binds to the Ciprofloxacn and makes it ineffective and to avoid any dairy product two hours prior and after taking it" so for anyone who has questions I suggest you one call a pharmacist not a doctor or at the very least get on google and find someone that has experience in the meds you are mixing. And the reason I ended up here cause I was looking up if I could mix Valium with the percs and Ciprofloxacn. Lol I've been diagnosed with insomnia and I picked the only doc in my town who doesn't prescribe sleep meds and told me to deprive myself of sleep until I fell asleep naturally. Tried that and for a week straight I only slept every other night. Gave that up. haha good luck and God bless

Sorry to hear what your going thru with your leg. That really sux! I've been on Cirpo before, and yes, taken it with milk, but never had an issue. ANY antibiotics can give you the runs and cause stomach issues.Thats why they say take it with milk-to coat your stomach. You can try Mallox instead of milk.Have you ever had issues with milk in the past?If your still not showing any signs of healing, I would request a new antibiotic. Not every antibiotic works the same for every person.
I would be VERY careful mixing any pain meds. They all cause breathing to slow down and if taken wrong could actual kill you. Not to scare you, but true.
As far as your sleep, I feel your pain. I use Melatonin. Its over the counter and works very well not only for me, but also my kids. Melatonin is what your body naturally makes to help you sleep, if its low, you cant fall asleep or stay asleep. This works.
Hope this helps out a bit. I hope you feel better soon!

I have been on sub's for 6 months now. I was on methidone and xanax for 8 straight years, thank god I'm clean now but my anxiety is threw the roof I need klonopin or something for my nerves, I don't think my Dr is gonna allow that and that scares me cause that means I could get it else where. Don't know what to do.

If your truly taking that much medication, I suggest you speak to a dr, and possibly go into a rehab for a bit. I stopped taking Vicoden & Xanex & other drugs on Sept 1, 2011 & have not had a relapse thankfully. That being said, its NOT easy by any means. I wasn't taking nearly as much as you, and it was tough. I don't know what state your in, but in NY there are a lot of programs that are either free or on a sliding scale based on your income if you don't have ins. Personally I think you may be past the point of doing it on your own. I wish you well, hope this helped a little bit.

I am currently on a suboxone program and am also prescribed xanax for anxiety. Two days ago a had a horrible migraine which is common for me so my wife gave me two of her klonopin to basically knock me out until the migraine ran its course. I went to my sub Dr appointment yesterday and when they did the u/a test to make sure I'm taking my subs as directed they came back and said I tested positive for the klonopin and since I'm not prescribed it, they threatened to kick me out of the program if I don't come back in a week and take another test to show there is no klonopin in my system. I'm very nervous about this because I have read so many different things about how long klonopim stays in your system and if I go back next week I'm afraid the klonopin will still show up and I can't afford to get booted from this program, it has changed my life for the better in so many ways. Can anyone give me a direct answer as to how long the klon will remain in my system and does anyone know how to speed up the process of getting it out quicker?

I can't give you a specific time frame- that would be irresponsible on my part. What I can share with you is that I'm currently prescribed 6mgs of Klonopin/day along with my Sub and based upon some of my past urine drug screens, I've tested negative for any/all Benzos after 3-4 days.

My personal opinion is that in a weeks time you should be clear of the Klonopin, provided you don't take any more. The only way(s) I know of to expedite getting it out of your system is to drink alot of water, or go to your local GNC and purchase an herbal cleanser. But unless you have unusually slow metabolism, I can't imagine you'll have any problems after a week.

This opinion is only based upon my own prior experiences, it isn't medically factual. I've been on Klonopin for a number of years and am familiar with how my body metabolizes it. I'm comfortable giving you the opinion that you'll be fine after a week.

I wish you the best.

Regards

Just tell the truth. Same thing happened to me but it was Valium. I was having a stressful week took a Valium to help me sleep every night for about 7 days. The Valium stayed in my system for about 2 months. I just told my doctor I needed to sleep and I was under a lot of stress and needed it. I'm careful now. I myself would be lost without Suboxone it has helped me kick my habit.
