I have just got a prescription for metoprolol tartrate 25 mg twice a day, for an occasional misfire of my heart valves, causing a short fiberlation. After reading ALL of the side effects , is there a safer alternative to this med. ## Hello, Joe! How are you? Side effects are usually just transient and go away, once your body gets used to the medication. Additionally, you may not experience any of them. It would be best to follow your doctors instructions for taking the medication to see how it works for you, then talk to them, if you end up having a problem. Metoprolol is classified by the FDA as a beta blocker that is most commonly used to treat high blood pressure and certain cardiac conditions. I have been on Lesinopril 20mg for a little over a year now. I just stopped taking it 4 days ago, trying to go natural on keeping my BP down. the first day I just did yoga each day, ate low calorie food as roasted veggies, and drank smoothies. My daily drinks consisted of Pomegranate juice and a spoon apple cider vinegar diluted with a cup of water. My average BP for the last 3 days was 121/78. Today I started having a severe headache, blurry vision and body ache in general. Is this common when you stop Lisinopril? While I do believe that I can keep my BP down naturally I am suspicious of the side effect of getting rid of this pill.. ## Hello, Rich! How are you? Yes, that can happen, if you suddenly stop such a medication, rather than tapering off of it, as reported by the FDA. You may ...
I take lisinopril once a day at 9am. By mistake, I took it last night at about 1 am. Should I miss taking it for the rest of the day? ## What dosage do you take? If I cut the tablet in half and took both halves, would it maybe kick in a bit faster. Seems to have a coating on the pill. ## I'm taking lisinopril 10mg during the day and my readings are perfect, but after 4 or 5 my blood pressure goes up to 150/90 or...
I have been taking 10 mg ofr Amlodipine Besylate. My problem is that it tastes horrible. Are there any of these in the generic that are coated. I gag every time I have to take this pill. Any information would be appreciated so I can ask my doctor for a pill specific if there is one! ## I don't know of any that are coated, but what I can tell you is that if you are tasting it, then you probably aren't taking it properly. Whenever you take medication, it should be places as far back in your mouth/throat, as possible, without choking yourself and immediately swallowed with a full 8 ounce glass of water. If you are tasting it, there is a good chance that you are either letting it sit in your mouth for too long, or not swallowing it with enough liquid to wash it down. If you are doin...
My diabetic and hypertensive mother (age 88) was recently hospitalized for weakness and frequent falling. She has been on clonidine and a new doctor took her off it. She has been having horrible waves of nausea and diarrhea for about a week and a half now. She has to force herself to eat a couple of bites of each meal, and she weighed all of 92 pounds when she went in. Besides the hell she is going through, I am worried about her wasting away. How long does the clonidine withdrawal process last? ## Are you saying they just abruptly took her off of it? Did they replace it with something else? Are they providing supportive therapy? I doubt that the hospital will really let her waste away, if she starts to lose too much weight and isn't holding anything down, they will force nutrients ...

I know it's the maximum dose, so how long would you give this medication or would you say it's not working for me? ## Generally, it takes about 4 to 5 weeks for this class of medications to reach their full level of efficacy in your body. I have been taking 25 mg of Atenolol for some time. It seems that since the shortage during the winter, I have had a bad taste in my mouth for some time. I am wondering if anyone else has noted this. It is the only medication I take. One doctor did wonder if any non-active ingredients in the Atenolol now being shipped have changed to create this effect. Has anyone else noticed this? ## KC94, I did a little research and according to the National Center for Biotechnology Information orally administered Atenolol is known to have a bitter taste. Different companies try to mask this by decreasing the solubility of the drug or by removing the interaction of the drug with the taste buds but it will vary from brand to brand and batch to batch. Basically some companies will flavor their drugs or...
I have a bottle of metoprolol 50 mg sandoz that was filled on 4/29/2008. Is it bad to use? It's 8 years old. Does it lose strength? And is it harmful? ## Hello, Frank! How are you? It does not become dangerous or harmful, but it can lose effectiveness, so it may not work as well as it should. It would be best to dispose of it and obtain a new supply. I just got a refill for 160 my Valsartan and it is made in CHINA! This was from OptimumRX. The generic I previously got from CVS was made in the USA. The other label on the container was Solco. The "Made in China" was obscured by the instructions but after carefully peeling them off, it was visible. I am not comfortable taking this very important drug when it is made in China. ## Hello JLC, In the United States medication is regulated by the FDA and has to meet comply with specific criteria in order to stay legal. Some medication is made in the United States and some is made in foreign countries, much in the same way some of our clothes are. Regardless of the pills origins, to be sold in the United States legally they must follow the FDA rules. If you purchased your medication f...
I started on this bp med 25mg. for the first time and on the 3rd day started to feel a little ill. Called doc, said whatever you do, don't stop taking. Took 1/2 tablet that night and on 4th day I felt HORRIBLE, like I'd been poisoned. Headache, nausea and dizzyness. Could barely get up. That was the last time I took it, and was sick for an entire 2 weeks, the half life is long. My last 3 days of being sick, I felt better but could not sleep for 3 days in a row. The whole thing was a heavy duty ordeal, and am now making a huge effort to do all the other lifestyle changes and alternative therapies as I will never want to go through what I did with chlorthalidone. It was really bad I told my doc, and not tolerable. Doc wanted to put me on lisiniprol, but I said no way am I trying s...

My doctor said it's ok, but I just wanted to double check. ## It is always best to follow your doctor's instructions. While there are no guarantees, it should be a smooth switch from one to the other. The FDA lists the typical side effects as possibly including nausea, dizziness, headache, increased urination, and hypotension. However, both of these medications are still available, at least for the moment. Where did you hear that Atenolol was discontinued? I am not saying you are wrong, because such information can change in an instance, sometimes it takes awhile for any given database to update. What I can t...
I have taken amlodipine and lisinopril for a few years. I recently got a staff infection and my Dr prescribed bactrim. I have heard not to take bactrim with lisinopril. Is this true? ## Hello Sally, You are absolutely right! Lisinopril has been reported to have a negative interraction with trimethoprim (Bactrim). These medications used together may increase the potassium levels in your blood which in turn can develop into Hyperkalemia. In severe cases this can lead to kidney failure, muscle pralysis, irregular heart rhythm and cardiac arrest. You are more likely to develop hyperkalemia if you are elderly, dehydrated, have a kidney disease, diabetes or if you are receiving Bactrim for long periods of time. Reportedly it is important that you maintain adequate fluid intake during the time...
I have recently been diagnosed with Chronic Paroxysmal Hemicrania i am currently taking both difen and verapamil. Does anybody know whether certain foods can trigger these headaches? ## No, research hasn't shown any specific causes or triggers associated with these headaches. Some people who get migraines, sometimes have certain food triggers, but this has never been shown with these. My suggestion would be to just pay attention to what you eat and drink and see for yourself if something triggers them. Such triggers are usually unique to the person, anyway. Where I get headaches from beer, you may not and while chocolate doesn't bother me, it may trigger them in you. CPH is usually treated with the NSAIDs, like the Dicolfenac in the Difen and the calcium channel blockers, Verapa...
