Bendectin And Birth Defects (Page 32) (Top voted first)

Updated

I took this drug in the 1970's while pregnant. Am looking for the side effects to the babies. Drug has been off the market for many years. Not sure on correct spelling. Used for nausea and vomiting during pregnancy. Thank you for any help you can send me. Sincerely, Dana.

I just came across this linked article about Diclectin / Diclegis [Bendectin / Debendox etc.] whilst reading this week's online weekly series about thalidomide presently featuring on *The Conversation* - "Why did thalidomide's makers ignore warnings about their drug?"

Ever look into vaccine injury? The symptoms you describe kinda sound more like a bombardment of heavy metals instead of Benedictin exposure...

I took Benedictine in 1977 for nausea. My daughter was born with multiply heart defects. She had an ASD VSD Wolfe Parkinson- White, Ebsteins Anomoly, and an aneurysm by the VSD. She had corrective surgery when she was 11. When at UCLA they did ask if I was a down-winder (I was not, but my husband was) and if I took any medications.
I only took the benedictine. I also had a tubal infection right before I got pregnant with her. Now I hear it may cause fertility problems She does want children. I do not know if anything can be done at this late stage.

I took this drug in 1979 when I had my daughter and she has a learning disability and mental health issues. Is there anything that can be done to help these people to be compensated for the damage they have had?

Carol, thank you for posting your concerns on your daughter's behalf.

With your question: "Is there anything that can be done to help these people to be compensated for the damage that they have had?", it never hurts to mention the actual *brand name* of the drug that you took, because this drug has now been sold under many different brand names in many different countries, with Bendectine, Diclectin, Debendox, and now of course, Diclegis, being the most familiar brand names. If you mention the actual *brand name* it then gives anyone who is still researching this drug some idea of which country you're from, when you took it [1979], and the particular circumstances that you believe resulted from your having taken this drug. I'm from Perth, Western Australia, and my mum took Debendox in 1953 when she was carrying yours truly. I have unilateral microtia / aural atresia, on my right-hand side. This simply means that I've never been able to hear on my right-hand side except via bone-conduction, and of course I cannot locate where sounds come from because one needs two ears to do this without having to turn one's head quickly back and forth should the sound endure long enough for me to pin its location down. And of course the *cocktail party effect* does not apply to me nor does my being able to properly enjoy stereophonic quadrophonic music etc..

Always remember that even the smallest bit of information about anything at all has been known to give a persistent and diligent drug researcher just the 'clue' that they're looking for, just like 'the public' are the eyes and ears of the 'the police'. This drug, under whichever of the many names [Bendectine, Diclegis, Debendox, Diclegis etc., etc.,] that it has been sold over many years, is the most studied drug in history, and it will likely continue to be studied until hell freezes over, and there's really no substantive reason why it shouldn't. Just recently, a Portuguese painkilling drug was trialled in France with some volunteers and it has sadly left one volunteer brain dead and five others critically ill. Just think, what if they hadn't have been in such a hurry to trial this drug and had used a lesser amount of volunteers, and the poor brain dead victim wasn't among them, and only the five volunteers got critically ill and then made a full recovery? They would then have known that this drug was just too dangerous for human consumption, and *pain* is a natural phenomenon anyway, so why try to kill it with a new dodgy drug using human 'guinea pigs' when we still have efficacious opiates etc.? The obvious reason for this new drug being trialled is that Portugal, just like Spain and many other countries, is suffering really badly economically, and if this new had have worked just as they had hoped in killing pain then the dollars would have soon rolled in. Chances are that this Portuguese drug manufacturer [Bial] will, in time, if it doesn't become bankrupt, just change its name [Bial] and continue to trial other just-as-dodgy drugs as if nothing has happened. There's a very well-known saying, which no doubt is just as well-known in Portugal as it is in many other countries worldwide, and it's simply: "The dogs are barking...but the caravan move$ on."

This describes my daughter........accurately........I had inj of Bendictine in 1973
I have felt guilty for so many years......
Also, no one has spoken about "mom!. My daughter also was born with a floating rib cage. Her connective tissues are weak. Well, I was diagnosed with lupus in the 90's and I have a very difficult time with connective tissues injuries and having continual pain. I do wonder if we BOTH were affected.

To Vicky.....#614........For years I would ask different pharmacists about the drug, Bendictine ..........none of them had any information. I went to libraries and I NEVER found any info on this drug. I was so sick for the first few months of my pregnancy (1973-4) that the dr advised that I purchase the inj. bottle of several doses of rx and the nurse would inj. me. (no insurance......it was a time that we paid our own ob doctor and hospital bills; kind of like a lay away plan!) Around the early 80's I heard a blip on the radio news that the first court case re Bendictine was in Orlando, Fl. I still could not find info and it was like the name just disappeared..........no computers then! Had to just focus on prayer and parenting. I believe my dr did his best........and I was grateful then. One granddaughter is autistic (6).

To Pam #621. Click on this following link for: Bendectin, Parts #1 & #2, and Bendectin Judicial Opinion. There's also Environmental Fact Sheets etc.

birthdefects.org/environmental-birth-defects

Birth Defect Research for Children, Inc., is located in Orlando FL.

In the middle of Page 6 in Part #1, it reads: "One FDA medical officer, Dr. Frances Da Costa testified in 1980 that if she had seen the Staples memorandum when she was reviewing Bendictin in 1968, she would have recommended that marketing be stopped until further testing could be completed."

Karen, that's great news in your post #628 about your daughter and I hope everything goes well for her in life. You've not said whether you took Bendectin when you were pregnant with her and/or anything else you may have in mind about this particular drug. The best we can do is to remain ever vigilant where we can concerning many things and to let other people know of that which we may find in our travels. We are so fortunate to have the internet and of course this forum called RxChat.com -- Thanks for taking the time to post your concerns regarding your daughter. All the best to you and yours from Perth, Western Australia.

I took Bendectin as well in 1973 during my pregnancy... fortunately, my son did not have any physical issues but he was diagnosed with learning disabilities in First Grade and was in "special" classes through 12th grade. He has always been taken advantage of by his friends because he's quiet, tender-hearted and sincere. He has NEVER been able to keep a job for long, lost his drivers license twice before age 21 and had to drop out of college because he couldn't pass the required no-credit English or Math classes; additionally his room mates were smoking marijuana around the clock. He doesn't know how to do a check book, I still have to manage his money and contribute heavily to his monthly expenses. Did I say he is 42 and bi-racial? I've spent tens of thousands of dollars on schooling, tutoring, rent, car payments, old utility bills, insurance, a 3rd DUI and clothing! Right now he is a security guard having completed training... did I say he is a whiner, he is particular, he is neat and totally organized? His life has been forever difficult, he gets depressed and often wonders why he is even on this planet. My only child... your child... if we only knew!!! I stand with all the mothers and the children effected by this horrible drug.

Ginger root is great for nausea. It has no side effect. Just slice off a piece and make it into tea. The price is right and it tastes great.

My mother took this drug when she was pregnant with me. I was born with all kinds of health problems. I was born with my left hand stuck together and missing fingers on my left and right hand. I was born with messed up toes and i was born without any hip joints. The doctors said that i would never be able to walk and my mother and my father would have to carry me room to room since i had no hip joints. My mother and father prayed for me and in 6 weeks God put hip joints inside of my body where there was nothing, but my health and my hands are the same. In fact my health is getting so much worse i can't even eat any kind of meat or wheat. My body never lets me take any kind of medicine at all. It just stays in my body until it's too much and when i was 28 years old the doctors found out that i had thyroid cancer, so they had to take 90% of my thyroid out and now my body won't even let me take any kind of thyroid medicine. I'm 35 now and all my life due to this drug i have been in pain. The doctor that found my thyroid cancer said that it was a slow growing cancer that i had to of had since i was a little girl. I know that drug is what messes up thyroids too and i know how sick and in pain i have been all my life and how alone i have felt all my life due to this drug. I'm a mother of three almost 4 babies and i hate that they have to take care of me so much when i'm supposed to take care of them and i'm so scared of dying and them having to be without a mom at all and my loving caring husband having to be without a loving wife. I'm trying to stay alive. It seems that is what i have been doing and what i will be doing for the rest of my life, not enjoying my life but just trying everyday as hard as i can to just stay alive.

My 37 year old daughter has a midline defect -- tongue tie. Each of her children has it as well. it's not as dramatic a problem as some of the folks on this list serve, but it has been a problem nonetheless -- jaw and tooth development, speech, etc. I'm wondering if there are others out there whose mother took bendectin who have this problem.
