Ascriptin Itself.
UpdatedMy 15 yr old hound started limping on his front legs the other day. He's already getting stiff in the hind quarters altho' once we get going he moves well. A friend suggested Ascriptin that she'd used years ago on her large White Shepherd and it really helped. I found a bottle of the brand-name Ascriptin (500mg + Maalox) in my medicine chest but only 2 left and altho' it's old there's no funky smell. Gave one to Buster at night and the next morning he no longer limped and was seemingly restored! This bottle is label-dated 1993! but it seems to have worked anyway. I'm sure it's no longer made in this brand-name form so I'm opting for some 325mg. bufffered aspirin and hope it does as well.

Hello, Vince! How is your pup? I'm glad that the medication helped.
However, I do want to caution you to check with your veterinarian regarding the proper dosage to give him. It can vary from breed to breed and according to their age and weight, they can be easily overdosed, which could be fatal.
Side effects for him, as listed by the FDA, may include nausea, headache, increased risk of bleeding and stomach irritation.
Is there anything else I can help with?
Hey Verwon, Thanks for the feedback. Do you have a dog or cat and any experience using buffered or coated aspirin? Buster's doing just fine these days, no bleeding, no nausea, none of those unwanted side effects. I did some research and discovered that Ascriptin was nothing more than plain aspirin coated with Maalox to protect the stomach. There are plenty of other such coated and otherwise buffered aspirin products on the market today, altho' none contain the 500 mg dosage the old Ascriptin itself had long ago. The highest over-the-counter aspirin dosage today is 325 mg. Bought a bottle of Ecotrin, a well-known coated aspirin and have been giving him one each morning with a bit of liverwurst, right before he takes his big morning drink of water , with no ill nor side effects. In fact they seem to have rejuvenated him to the point I sometimes forget he's 15 years old. So far so good. I watch him like a hawk and will report anything out of the ordinary. Be well and thanks again!
I have had many pets throughout my life, I used to rescue cats and, at this time, my fiancé and I have a rescue dog named Moose.
I've never had to dose them with Aspirin, but my concern is that it can cause liver damage in animals, just like it can in people, and that risk is greater, if they are given too high of a dose.
Just because you've not noticed any side effects, that doesn't mean there aren't any. Your dog can't tell you if he's having abdominal pain due to liver issues, or stomach pain due to stomach damage, or etc.
Thus, it is best to consult your vet, to be safe.
Are there any other questions or concerns?
Moose is a great name. What breed or mix is he? My Buster is at least 15 and gets only one 325mg Ecotrin in the morning. I'm withholding the Tramadol I have for him until he really starts looking like he's hurting when he walks. Wish you could see him run around my 30x70ft corral I use for his exercise other than 4 walks a day. Your concern is appreciated. I get him to UF Small Animal clinic here in Gainesville Fl 2x a year now so not to worry that anything untoward will happen to him from 1 pill a day. Thanks again for your feedback. Be well,
Moose is a chihuahua/schipperke mix. He was dumped off as a stray at only about 4 to 5 months old, then in foster for a month or so, before my fiancé saw his pics online. He is now very spoiled and pampered with LOTS of toys!
I hope your fur baby continues to do well! :-)
Thanks for the good wishes. The feeling's mutual. I'll keep you posted as time permits. Never had a full-sized dog live longer that 12 so this voyage with Buster is into new territory for me. He's a ridgeback-looking mix, maintaining a steady 72lbs, and is too strong for my wife to walk. I'm 6'5 and 240 so I can handle him easily. I'm getting a lot of pressure from the wife and daughter to get a small dog when Buster leaves us. Will look for a local shelter or Humane Society female next, which could be some time considering how robust and fit Buster is staying. Be well,
My son just told me today that they had to put down our old dog that we'd had since he was 4, she stayed with my ex-husband when we split, she was 16. But she got arthritis very bad, was in a lot of pain and could hardly walk on her own, anymore.
Some of them do quite well for a very long time.
Moose, however, just turned 1.
There is a website you can check for adoptable rescues in your area, it's called petfinder.
:-)
Hi Verwon, Condolences on the loss of your old pet. Doesn't matter where they live they're always in your heart and their departure leaves a hole that takes time to fill in. Been there 5X already myself. Moose should live a very long time considering his size. My Buster's doing fine--without any tramadol or aspirin. Decided to stop them and see how he gets around. So far he shows little if any signs of pain, discomfort or disability so I'll hold those meds for the time he really has trouble walking. I have a +4 allergy to cats or I'd have one too. Be well and keep in touch as time and interest permits. Vince
