I went thru a week of nervous jerks, all the time, for about a week. I was miserable. After that I never wanted to risk withdrawing like that again. Make sure you taper when getting off. I was given Xanax as an alternative for Ativan. I have been on Ativan for some time now and am leary about using Xanax as a replacement. Is there reason to be worried? ## Why are you taking it as an alternative? Xanax is actually more addictive and has more long lasting side effects than Ativan does. yellow ## Are you referring to Klonopin, with the active ingredient Clonazepam? ## klonopin (clonazapam) is usually prescribed for anxiety disorder. Usually short term as it has addiction potential. Long term use has also been associated with muscle atrophy & Periodontal disease (due to decreased saliva) If taken daily for more than 2 weeks, you should withdraw gradually, e.g., by 1/4 to 1/2 mg. every 3-5 days. It will take an additional 3-5 days before you completely rid it from your system. Try to take only as needed in as small a dose as is affective. I have found I only need 1/3 - 1/6 of what my shrink prescribes !
