Allergic To Sulfur
UpdatedMy 52 yrs young husband is highly allergic to anything containing Sulfur and any shellfish. Just today he was prescribed Trazodone 50mg for his insomnia and depression. He also has a family history of bipolar disorder, liver disease, heart disease, as well as other medical problems on his side of the family.
I have spent the past five hours pouring over every site I could find that have any information on the above named drug, but I have not been able to find anything detailed about allergy warning other than, "Tell your doctor if you have ever had any unusual or allergic reaction to trazodone or any other medicines. Also tell your health care professional if you have any other types of allergies, such as to foods, dyes, preservatives, or animals. For non-prescription products, read the label or package ingredients carefully." And, this was from drugs.com.
Also, after reading off all of the possible side effects to my husband, he is not really willing to take the prescription drug that a psychiatrist for the local Veteran's Outpatient Clinic has told him that he has to take. Other than his blood pressure and glucose levels being slightly high, he is in relatively good health.
Because of his allergies, family health history and his current health, should he take this drug as prescribed? Or, should he contact the Veteran's Clinic and get a second opinion? Please give me some advise that I can pass on to him.

Not medical advice, but in my personal opinion doctors are sometimes too willing to prescribe something very quickly for a patient. If you listed a sulfur allergy in his medical chart, and assuming that the doctor reviewed it before prescribing the Trazodone, then he should be okay to try it. If your husband is hesitant to take it, then perhaps it would not hurt for you guys to look into a more homeopathic route for treatment. Sometimes making alterations in diet and lifestyle habits is enough to alleviate a chronic condition. Nevertheless, it is most important that you guys follow your hunches about his health because after all, it is his body, and no doctor or anyone else knows exactly what he is feeling. With that said, a second opinion would not hurt - you can explain that he does not feel comfortable taking Trazodone because of the mentioned side effects, and see if an alternative is available. I hope this helps and wish the both of you good health!
