Alcohol And Gabapentin (Page 5) (Top voted first)

Does anyone drink beer or other alcohol while taking this? I start on it tonight, increasing every 5 days to 900 mg total a day. I'm curious as to how much alcohol can be tolerated and if there are any reasons to avoid it completely. I like my Budweiser. Thanks for any input.

I don't know why i am the only one who experiences this....
Back in the year 2000 i was on a prescription of Gabapentin 100 mlg it was prescribed for mood disorder. I did not the like way it made me feel a bit drugged so i did not always take it.
Later i developed sever insomnia and no thing helped so i went to a bar and a had some whine which helped me to sleep. But one night i had taken the gabapemtin and the whine. i woke up in the middle of the night so drunk i could not get out of bed.
It took me a while and falling down a flight of stairs trying to go to the bathroom that something was wrong and then i realized that drinking alcohol after taking gabapentin caused severe intoxication. The days i had not taken gabapentin i was alright and i never again did that. Except more recently when i had some and took it by accident and the same thing . Seems as though i am the only one to react that way.

I take 400 mg of gabapentin daily about an hour before I drink between 2 and 4 beers nightly, usually high alcohol Imperial IPA's. I haven't had any problems for the past year except getting a better buzz and sleepy. It's a great combination!

I take 3200mg for nerve pain after damaging the cervical spine and have done for 6 years now. The pain clinic informed me that Alcohol and Gabapentin operate on the pain receptors which is why once drunk you don't feel the pain. They pointed out that taking the Gabapentin after drinking has to be done in a sensible manner as the Gabapentin can double the effects of drunkenness, they advise depending on how much you drink reducing the dosage. Unfortunately you can only know by how much by trial and error.

My advice to you is don't drink with any medication. My 53 year old husband died last year while on this drug. If you are taking this to help stop drinking, get your heart evaluated, have an ultra sound done.

Update: Totally off of Gabapentin and felt great... So I go see a psychiatrist, for the 1st time in my life. You see I'm trying to deal with my addiction to pain meds and my destructive downward spiral I'm stuck in. So this shrink takes away my Xanax and puts me on Klonopin (Which scares the Hell out of me) then writes a prescription for: Gabapentin! OMG! When I told him I just got off that drug he says "We'll, I just put you back on it" I have elected to not take it. No way, No how. Now I have to deal with that Klonopin crap. I've never know anyone who's taken it and the only thing I know about it is the horror stories I've read about. Is there no end to this madness?

I'd say be careful. Take it very easy. My experience is that 2 spirits is my total limit. I will feel very drunk bit also drowsy and a bit queasy.

Can somebody say 'addiction'? Who the hell even prescribes that much! My 1600 is almost unheard of. Gabapentin MAKES a drunkish feeling but you need to "drink heavy" too? Go to rehab. I'll pray for you!

I'm sorry but I call bulls***. Too many people saying that take massive overdoses everyday and drink booze with no affect. Just talk to your doctor! These internet PhDs are gonna get you killed. Everyone reacts different. Just like not everyone who takes gabapentin gets the manic type effect for about 2 hours then crashes and falls asleep. But I do. Everyone is different and the only person who can answer this wisely for you is someone who knows your body. Your doctor! Get off the internet and call your doctor. Case closed. God bless!

I have been on 900 mg of gabipentin for 6 months for periferal neuropathy. Caused from Guillain Barre Syndrome. That is a high dosage. Told by neurologist to avoid alcohol. Had a small drink of wine eith friends and spent night in pain as the meds didnt work. This drug messes with your brain waves so adding alcohol is foolish. Especially for women.

Coming from someone who takes 1600mg a day and has for over 4 years I agree with this. Mixing alcohol with gabapentin can lead to overdose (greatly intensifies the effects of the medication) and even death. Without writing a book I'll just say, when I was only on 300mg in the morning, 800mg at night, I decided to have a drink once. And it massively f***ed me up. I woke up in the hospital in restraints. They accused me of trying to kill myself. Ha! Not in a million years. Suicide isn't an option. A shot of fireball whiskey along side my medication sent me into convulsions. Obviously folks called 911 and doctors saw high levels of gabapentin. I've never touched a drop since. Either find a different medication or go dry. Completely dry. I never was a drinker. I had like one shot of booze a month. Max. I hated the burn. Well now I'm just the party pooper. Oh well! I'd rather live than have fun at one single party.

Take more Gabapentin. 1200 mg is the minimum therapeutic dose.

100mg is really a low dose if that is per day. I don't think so, but take it easy.

I'm 31 and have been taking gabapentin 600 mg every night before bed since I was 17. I honestly have a few glasses of wine a night and do go out drinking with friends a few times a month. I haven't noticed anything unusual with mixing the two of these. I recently have had bad episodes drinking and blacking out especially with liquor but I'm positive it was because of the klonopin I just had been prescribed which you should never drink on.. (That's what lead me to check on the drinking effect with the two medications that lead me to this thread) An anti-anxiety medication would cause more of what your describing with the husband fighting thing than the gabapentin.
