Alcohol And Gabapentin (Page 4) (Top voted first)

Updated

Does anyone drink beer or other alcohol while taking this? I start on it tonight, increasing every 5 days to 900 mg total a day. I'm curious as to how much alcohol can be tolerated and if there are any reasons to avoid it completely. I like my Budweiser. Thanks for any input.

I was on gabapentin 400 mg for nerve pain from a surgery called Arnold Chiari which I had about ten years ago I was having nerve pain and my neurologist said it was from scar tissue. I had to increase it to 800 mg but now I'm having bad depression from it.

What kind of weird bad things ?

Excessive need of caffeinated beverages to counteract the tiredness. Alcohol tolerance down to where it's not worth the trouble. Unexpected diarrhea on occasion after drinking a small amount. Fatigue along with a low libido is not good either. Have a nice day

It will lower your tolerance to where your out of control staggering, and doing dumb stuff before you know it.
if you must try not drinking anymore than half of what you used to..

I have stomach burning the day after drinking a few alcoholic drinks. The alcohol isn't worth to me the way my stomach burns.

That's a pretty low dose. I take 900mg three times a day for chronic nerve pain. 2700mg total. I'm a tea totaler now.

I can totally relate to that, it's been bizarre at times.

I know this is old but for anyone reading it now I just want to say gabapentin is not a pain pill. That was his first dose and so it isn't going to help with the pain on the first dose. The dr explained this to me in detail before I started taking it but long story short it has to be in your system for at least a couple of weeks before you know if it is going to help with nerve damage pain. I have been on it for a couple months now and it has worked miracles. I can function again. So don't give up from the start and think it isn't working. It won't work immedietly. It is designed for long term use. Originally for epilepsy but has been found to significantly treat nerve damage as well.

I have been having more and more problems with Gabapenton and my ability to drive safely and do my job. The brainfog and lack of energy has just put my career on hold as I stuggle to just to do a marginal job.

I changed doctors who noticed that 2700 mg was very high. He said the symptoms I'm experiencing probably are caused by the dose l'm on. Remember your brain is a very large collection of nerves. Started decreasing the dose slowly over several weeks. I have hope that my thinking and functionality will return where I can be competitive at work agian. I had already filed papers to retire earlier then I wanted to because of the dull brain funtion I have. Hopefully I'll work a few more years now withour the tremendous struggle.
I will admit my back pain is better with Gabapentin, but I would rather be in more pain than be a Zombie on thas stuff.

I agree. That is what I'm dealing with now.
This stuff can make you want to just give up.

Same exact problems.

Tiredness, depression, declined mental abilities, very low alcohol tolerance, poor work performance.

This stuff can have some very negative effects on you.

Hi Anne, I took Gab that demonic drug for 4 months almost 4 years ago and am still suffering from the side effects. It has rearranged my brain some how. It's the most bizarre things I have ever experienced and the most terrible. I weaned myself off in one month - to fast, it should have been a 100 mg per month. I was taking 1200 mg so should have taken one full year to wean myself off. There is no one that can help me with this. Anything the Drs give me turns on me, I will have depression and sometime the suicide will come on also. So I can't take anything anymore. If you end up suffering from this, please report it to the FDA MedWatch at fda.gov/Safety/MedWatch.

I'm prescribed 900mg of gabapentin daily. I took the pills earlier than normal. I forgot I had taken them and had around 6 shots of vodka. I felt paralyzed. I DO NOT recommend drinking while taken these pills.

I was on Gabapentin for a very brief and unhelpful time. And whenever I would drink I'd get increasingly belligerent. I would be argumentative and snappish. I was never physically violent. But something majorly bad was happening to me. I stopped and my best friend noticed. She told me about what I had done, how I'd behaved, and spoken to her a couple of times. And I only vaguely remembered a part of it. Wasn't me at all. Although I do feel there were some deep-seated things that I was repressing and/or compartmentalizing which is why I was taking things out on her to begin with. I've always been a happy drunk and someone for whom alcohol is a stimulant as I have a paradoxical reaction to it, but this was insane. Never again!

Hi Im on gabapentin 1800mg a day and I was on 2400. The dosage had to be lowered because it was affecting my speech and my memory. I don't drink alcohol as I was told that because this med is also used for seizures it could have a reverse reaction and cause anyone to have a seizure. MY QUESTION IS DOES ANYONE KNOW IF THERE IS CHALK AS AN INGREDIENT IN GABAPENTIN? I can't seem to find an answer on that.

Don't drink while taking any kind of meds, my 53 year old husband suddenly died while taking this poison. A message to all you drinkers get your heart checked, he had an enlarged heart we did not know about this problem which was caused from alcoholism.
