Alcohol And Gabapentin

Does anyone drink beer or other alcohol while taking this? I start on it tonight, increasing every 5 days to 900 mg total a day. I'm curious as to how much alcohol can be tolerated and if there are any reasons to avoid it completely. I like my Budweiser. Thanks for any input.

Alcohol should be avoided while using this medication, especially at such a high dosage, because it can aggravate the side effects, making them much more problematic.

These can include: nausea, drowsiness, dizziness and peripheral edema.

I've taken 3600mg of Gabapentin each day for 21 months now! I drink alcohol with them & feel ok. I would just say that the Gabapentin alone will leave u running for the nearest bathroom 20 mins after food or drink!!

I have been on mirapex for 5 years, but because of the gambling side effects, have gradually stopped. My doctor prescribed gabapentin 100mg, for restless legs. I started last night and needed 2 for relief. Along with minor side effects, I have a terrible headache this morning. I normally have one drink in the evenings. Should I stop alcohol while taking this prescription.?

I am currently tapering off klonopin, take 200 mg of Zoloft, 40 mg of propranolol and am about to start gabapentin to ease the withdrawal effects of klonopin. I like to drink wine socially. Will I still be able to do so?

Yes, stop!!! I've been on Gabapentin 600mg for 28 days. I had 8oz of beer and my head pounded for days. You can't take a pain reliver, because it makes the Gabapentin stronger, which just makes the headache worse!!! Plus others have reported blacking out when combining even a little alcohol with Gabapentin.

I've been taking 300 mg, once a day for a month for pinched nerve in my back. Have had serious depression this week. It's one of the listed side effects. I am going to try to wean off after I talk to my doctor.

I take 2100 mg a day and also like my Budweiser. My balance is a wreck when I drink, but that could be from the MS. No major issues.

I've been taking 2100 mg of gabapentin for 4 years religiously. I have drank on numerous occasions. No problems at all besides possibly over consuming lol. You have absolutely nothing to worry about.

You and me pal, take my 2000mgs gabs and drink cold Budweiser at night, no problemo!! Work everyday, no side effects, no headache, nada. I started for restless legs on gabs also, liked how mello it seem to make me, added Budweiser myself.

This is an old question, but it popped up for me because I wanted to see if anyone had the same problem I did when I mixed vodka and Gabapentin. I have only been on this medication for a week and did not even take it the night of drinking. I am 31 and never in my life have I had an episode like this: I had around 5 shots of vodka (80%) and 1 beer. I was told the next day I pretty much beat up my guy friend and was trying to beat up my husband. I went outside looking for them, I woke my children up screaming at my friend and husband so my 9 yr old daughter seen a little bit of this, and I even had to go to the hospital for a staple and stitch in my head over being restrained so hard I fell and hit my head. None of this is ME! My husband and I have been together for 15 years and he has never seen that side of me. I have always protected my children from seeing anything like that and here my daughter seen my husband holding me down! I had to talk to her the next day and tell her sorry she had to wake up to that and just said she will never see it again. I can only imagine how scary that was to see! I can say without a doubt do NOT mix alcohol with this med! Even if you don't take it that night cause it is still in your system! I learned the hard way. I feel like my husband, my friend, my daughter, and myself were all victims that night because I would have never thought THAT would have happened! I've drank on meds before and been fine, but this one is not one to mess with! Please save yourself and others the possibility of what could potentially happen. I will NOT be touching alcohol at all! This medication is helping me and I would rather have the medicine than a night of fun every now and then.

I took 900mg for first time last night. Had one 24 oz beer also. If anything it helped more with my anxiety than any other benzo I have ever taken. Was prescribed to me for nerve damage. Doesn't even help with the pain at all.

Five shots of vodka is enough for most people to go nuts on, even without meds. It's possible that your system is reacting differently than others on these meds. I have had no issues like that.

I'm 60 years old and other than when I'm very sick and when I was taking a venipuncture class because my hands shook when I was taking blood, I drink everyday. The gabapentin does nothing to me when I take it along with the wine, which is what I normally drink. However, I drink pretty much a 750 ml bottle ever night. Even with my years of drinking, 5 shots of vodka and I would be trying to beat up all my friends. Of course, I would be unsuccessful as always.

I am an alcoholic. I hate AA and the 12 steps. I am taking naltrexone because I believe it will (and has) helped. My doctor who is giving me the naltrexone also wants me on 2 gabapentin each day ( I do not have dosage# handy)' It has really made no discernible difference and I wonder why so many people are taking it when nada has been proved conclusively and there seem to be so many side effects. I am taking it as a nod to my current Dr.
More than anything, I want people to look up the
SINCLAIR METHOD.
Good research there. A good alternative to AA garbage.

Yes, gabapentin will cause severe depression and or changes in mood and orientation. I went through it. Family and friends started noticing me not acting the same. My worrying got out of control. Was not acting like myself. It can be very dangerous to some and others tolerate it. Getting off of it was even harder. I was one who couldn’t tolerate it. My opinion is that if ur feeling depressed already to talk to dr. Or do some research into what has happened to some coming off of it.

That's not true James I take 2400 mg a day 800 mg 3 times a day alcohol does not mix with me at all it makes me sick it makes me nasty and I don't like it because I know it could kill you with this medicine you can dabble if you like but it's no joke

Don't drink on gabapentin. It turned me into a raging lunatic. I trashed my apt and beat my boyfriend up after drinking too much wine. I'm usually a pretty chill drunk and I just go to sleep when I've had to much. But with the gabapentin in my system, I was violent and mean. I'm lucky I didn't get arrested, but I blacked out and woke up with bruises almost as if I fell down a flight of stairs. Save yourself the humiliation. Drink some lemon water and call it a night. Alcohol and anxiety/mood disorders don't mix. Self control and awareness are far more valuable to me than having a drink. After self medicating with alcohol for many years, I'm ready to stick to my treatment and let the medication do its job, without interference. And waking up after drinking, feeling down, depressed, embarrassed, low, unstable etc. Isn't worth it. And it isn't conducive to healing a mental illness.
