Adderall Backorder (Page 83)

Updated

I take generic Adderall 20 mg for narcolepsy and there is not one local pharmacy that has it in stock. I have never had this problem before. The pharmacies are saying that it's on backorder from the manufacturer. Is anyone else having problems getting their scripts filled?

Get ready for the end of this year. The DEA reduced the quota more for 2023.

Re: BlessedLady (# 1643) Expand Referenced Message

Ya know, I hate this as much as everyone. That said, every MD that Rx'd over 40 to 60mg a day is culpable; every patient who took 40mg a day is culpable. Like it or hate it (yes, I hate it), the recommended adult daily dosage max is 40mg. Doctors, patients and pharmacies have disregarded this; the DEA looked the other way forever, pretty much. Their complicity through silence was a "de facto" nod to high daily dosages. And now.... The DEA's attitude is " we didn't audit, or enforce, the 'safe maximum ' dosages, and now we are, and it's YOUR problem, screw y'all, we're not taking responsibility for creating a 'problem '". Now, they're suddenly enforcing caps on dosages and that will be shortages because docs will still Rx 60 70 and more a day. So I think it sucks and is a bureaucratic failure all around.... But it's not just the DEA. If ya got away with something that is a no-no, it's hard to complain effectively when the Feds say "we changed our minds.... We were too lax and now we're tightening up "

Re: Rcma (# 1644) Expand Referenced Message

If the government is concerned about overprescription, they should enact legislation that targets the problem at its source - the doctors prescribing unneeded medication. Lowering the quota for the active ingredient makes it harder for patients with legitimate prescriptions just as much as it does for those without a legitimate need.

This is all BS anyway... the DEA treats stimulants like Adderall the same way as things like opioids despite the risk factor of the two being no where near the same. While exact data is vague, most estimates are that annual deaths caused by stimulants including Adderall is somewhere between 500-3,000 people yearly. Compared to the over 50,000 opiod deaths per year.

It's incredibly frustrating the DEA continues to just choose to inflict stress on ADHD patients for basically no reason, despite the drugs being a longterm solution for many. By all means, target Telehealth and burn them to the ground - but don't negatively impact legitimate patients!

Re: tim (# 1646) Expand Referenced Message

I agree with you totally. But... It's not the job of Federal legislation to cap MDs Rx's. State licensing boards and AGs can come down on MDs. The DEA is like the FBI. Every MD has. DEA # and it would take them no time to see EXACTLY which MDs are over Rx'ing AND via drivers licenses they know who is picking up Rx's at pharmacy.

Lowering the production is a blunt tool and it's ignorant and lazy and idiotic.... like many bureaucracies. They accomplish their goal of "less amphetamine" by creating mayhem and suffering. Doing it wisely requires tactics and strategy and enforcement. They KNOW that over Rx'ing will still happen.... But more ppl will end up without meds. Some ppl will still get 60, 80 + mg a day. And the DEA will create a black market by creating scarcity. It's totally counter productive and truly idiotic

Re: BlessedLady (# 1643) Expand Referenced Message

I heard they left it exactly the same, which means we will run into shortages again. I've been taking it for over 20 years and I've never had trouble getting it filled.

40 mgs max? Where do you see that? Ive read the max dosage is 60mgs for ADD/ADHD which my doctor says is the highest she'll write. I heard narcolepsy can be a little higher.

Re: Rcma (# 1644) Expand Referenced Message

I looked it up. I swear they must've changed that from 60 to 40mg. 40 mg for ADHD and 60 mg for narcolepsy.

Re: Rcma (# 1647) Expand Referenced Message

Please post the link that says the recommended dosage is 40 mg a day. Is this from the FDA, a insurance company or drug manufacturer? Although the standard is not the same for everyone. Everyone does not respond to the same dosage. I know quite a few people that were diagnosed back in the 90's. Some were prescribed Adderall Immediate Release and some were prescribed Dextroamphetamine Immediate Release. Their dosages ranged from 60 mg-80 mg a day. Insurance companies have limits set on what they require a PA for. That depends on the individual company. The recommended dose is set by each manufacturer. Those amounts are listed on the Prescribing Information Insert from each manufacturer.

Re: Ken (# 1648) Expand Referenced Message

Unfortunately, the DEA decreased the amount for 2023. It was not as much as they decreased it in 2022 but it is still a decrease. It is listed in the Federal Register.

Re: BlessedLady (# 1650) Expand Referenced Message

There are plenty of resources, agreed. The PDR is definitely authoritative: pdr.net/Mobile/Pages/drug-summary/Adderall-amphetamine-aspartate-monohydrate-amphetamine-sulfate-dextroamphetamine-saccharate-dextroamphetamine-sulfate-1048.

I'm one who believes that 40/day is too low for some.. Absolutely... Individualized and in my own experience it depends on so many variables.... Stress levels, seasonal (S.A.D.)... Body size, exercise, diet, CFS,.MS, narcolepsy, shift work, etc. BUT, there is also tolerance. And IMO I've seen people over the years post on other ADD forums that MDs Rx big doses of benzos and Adderall. IOW some MDs HONESTLY want the 15 min appt to be over on 12 min. Writing scripts can be easier than talking about caffeine or alcohol consumption and bad diets. And the absolute truth is that there is a black market of $1/mg and up. Should we, who use the medication responsibly, be punished for decades of over Rx'ing? For higher ADD in kids from screens and over-stimulation? No. But it's a complex issue that is being treated in manner that will only exacerbate illegal sales and over Rx'ing. The DEA solution to real problems they've partially created is idiotic.

Re: tim (# 1653) Expand Referenced Message

They didnt say which manufacturer. I call Walmart....first after saying it's on backorder for weeks, they told me that the manufacturers have reached their limit and won't sell any until 2023. Then I called, they told me it's still on backorder because the manufacturer isn't producing any right now. I don't know, it says some manufacturers have some available. However, I still keep hearing backorder and two Walmart pharmacies were I have a refill. I call them both and whoever I can get it from first I'm going with. This Wednesday will be 4 weeks exactly.

i am located in SF bay area region and we don't seem to have a problem with stock. however the stock we do have is absolute garbage. teva and sandoz IR both are completely ineffective now and feel horribly taxing on the body with barely any of the focus ever since the shortage.

i also noticed the current teva's texture is really chalky and crumbly.. not like the teva i'm used to. found a quarter of an old teva pill and compared it to the new teva. completely different textures. the old one is hard and compact while the new one is powdery to the touch and chalky.

it's so unfair that even with the shortage, seems they changed the formulas for the worst as well... planning to make FDA complaints for both if that even does anything.

hang in there everyone! i quit adderall cold-turkey since 12/8 and i'm hoping they somehow get the good sense to go back to their old formula eventually. as for now, unfortunately looks like even taking nothing is better.
