Actifed Cold And Allergy Availability (Page 2) (Top voted first)

I always found Actifed to be the only cold medicine that worked for me. Now I cant find it at any of my local drug stores even behind the counter. Is it still available? Even the pharmacist I talked to thought it was on the shelf and then realized they quit carrying it.

Walgreens carries WalAct (red box - 48 tablets - behind the pharmacist's counter), which is an exact generic substitute for Actifed. It is displayed behind the register (not to be confused with what is NOW sold as Actifed - which doesn't work for me - for which you bring a card from the over-the-counter section of the store to the register); you must ask the pharmacist for WalAct (in some cases, point it out), show ID, and sign for it. I think I paid $7.99 plus tax when I bought some a few days ago. They limit the amount you can buy (because the ingredients can be used to make illegal street drugs if obtained in large quantities); I believe it's one box every two weeks or so. If you don't want to make several trips, bring your significant other along who has a driver's license and just go once a month. As a warning, though, sometimes they run out at the height of allergy season.

September 26: After an absence of about 2 months (and pharmacists - who have no say in what brands are carried - telling me that according to their computers the product has been "discontinued") I found it again at my local Loblaws in the lowest visiblity shelf space: the bottom. There was, however, a good supply.

Actifed is, I have to accept now, is gone. McNeil, the manufacturer has discontinued both Actifed and Actifed Plus. A helpful Loblaws pharmacist on a slow Sunday morning investigated for me and confirmed it wasn't a Loblaws' decision but the manufacturer. No reason was given by the manufacturer.

His only advice for diehard Actifed users was to visit Mom and Pop neighbourhood pharmacies in the hope that they had old stock on the shelves.

I have been having the same problem finding Actifed, all the regular stores are no longer carry it. As with some other posters here, Actifed has always been the only antihistimine that worked for me, although I did notice that it was not quite as effective after 2006 when the active ingredients changed.

I did a little bit of searching anf for any of you that are have quick access to an American Walgreens then you are in luck.

Walgreens still has a pre-2006 and post-2006 Actifed-like medication for sale. Here are the 3 different meds I have found; Wal-Finate, Wal-Finate-D and Wal-Phed.
Check them out with your favorite search engine.

I will be going to the States soon so I will be trying these out. Good luck to the rest of you in your search for an Actifed alternative.

I finally got around to ordering (from Canada) some Wal-Act online and this is what I found: "Not sold on-line". The reviews online confirms to me that this is the Actifed that we've been looking for. The Walgreen Wal-Act URL:

The drug companies that manufactured the original formulation of Actifed (pseudoephedrine with triprolidine) have discontinued it because it is used by drug dealers to make illegal methamphetamine (crank) in the United States. The problem got so bad that the U.S. Congress passed a federal law back in 2006 in the States that required people buying it over the counter to have to give their drivers' license numbers to the pharmacist and were restricted to only two boxes at a time. Then Pfizer stopped making the original formula in the U.S. at all, and I had to buy it from online pharmacies in Canada. This is the only place I could find it -- until the regular pharmacies I bought it from stopped carrying it and now I can't find it in Canada at all. I have found only a few online drug stores in the U.K. that sell it, if you are able to find one that will sell you more than the one box limit. Ridiculous, if you consider the overseas shipping cost you will pay. Little by little all the supplies of Actifed online are disappearing. Actifed is the only antihistamine that has ever worked for me. I have literally tried every other OTC allergy product out there (Claritin, Zyrtec, Sudafed, Benadryl, etc. etc.) and NONE of them do a d***n thing for me. I have even tried prescription Allergan for nothing. The people who legitimately used Actifed for nasal congestion have been screwed by the meth-heads who have ruined the availability of this product for everyone.

Not only do I find Wal-Act (sold at Walgreens, behind counter, drivers license required -- no prescription) to be every bit as effective as the Actifed we all remember so well, I recently discovered that my teenage son who has suffered more severe allergies than I ever had and been prescribed numerous more expensive medications for years, reacts quite well to the Wal-Act too. It finally occurred to me to have someone with similar genetic make-up try the product that works for his old man. Lo and behold, no more prescription drugs for him. Something to consider for any of you with offspring.

I've found generic brand of Actifed. It's call Apodine and it worked great! I got them at Bi-Lo phamarcy. You have to sign for it. Bi-lo can order for you if they ran out.

Good news. A substitute for Actifed is now available at Walgreens called Wal-act. It has both Pseudoephedrine and Triprolidine. I've tried it and it works .

I just purchased Wal-Act from Walgreens here in So Cal. I asked the pharmacist if she had any idea if they are discontinuing Wal-Act. She said she hasn't heard anything of the sort.
The packaging has now been changed from white & red to just a red box, kinda resembling Actifed. Because of state law, we can only buy 1 box (48 cnt) per day.

You can get a box of 48 A DAY? Wow! That's awesome, because just about everywhere else you can find only 1 box of 48 a month. I think I'll be moving to S Cal very soon! Thanks for the tip!

My Walgreens contacted me and told me that they had received in five more packages and I could purchase one. It was in response to the "please stock this item" inquiry that I sent via the Walgreens site. I did choose to set up a re-occurring delivery from the Florida on-line option though since the supply of Wal-Act continues to be iffy. No response from the corporate Walgreens with long-term status, so if you want the product at your store, I'd submit a request via their web site to try to push it centrally.

Count me in as one who swore by Actifed! It was the only thing that EVER worked when I would have my sinus attacks! After several years of trying everything else and today being in the middle of one of my attacks, I googled Actifed and found this site & message board!!! Yea!!!! I just went today not even an hour ago to my local Walgreens in Monroe, La. and they did have the Wal-Act...48 tablets for $9.99. I had to purchase from the pharmacy and could only buy one box and show my license! I would have gladly pulled my top over my head like they do in the Mardi Gras parades down here trying to get beads, just to get a box of the stuff! I'll report back tomorrow with my results!
