The FDA has requested that all such combination narcotic medications be changed to only contain a maximum of 325mgs of the Acetaminophen, due to the danger of liver toxicity and overdose toxicity. Some manufacturers have already begun to implement the change and they are all expected to have it completely by January of 2014. Thus, starting one of them now is likely not a good idea, anyway. My pharmicist said they were no longer made. ## The FDA has asked dr to no longer prescribe it with 500 mg acetaminophen but instead to use the mandated reduced 325 mg acetaminophen. The FDA has also asked pharmacists to contact the drs if a rx is written for the 500 mg before filling it. The hydrocodone and acetaminophen (Lortab, Vicodin, Norco) are still made. But, the amount of acetaminophen has been reduced. ## So can you take a Tylenol to get the same results since they lowered it to 325? If a person took 4 vicodin 5/500 how long would the side effects last because my grandmas dr. told my mom she could when she's in severe pain only once in 48hrs. ## It isn't going to last 48 hours, even if she takes that many, it is only going to last for maybe 6 to 8 hours, she may be lucky and get 10 hours of some pain relief, if her body processes it slowly. The main issue with these and taking so many of them, at once, is the Acetaminophen, it can be toxic in amounts of over 4 grams or 4,000mgs in a day and by taking 4 of these, she would be taking 2grams of it, at once. Most elderly people also process medications much slower than younger people, so it can stay in her body longer, so using that much too often could create serious ill health effects. They have been removed from the market, so no one can fill it for you. The best thing to do would be to see your doctor about getting a replacement prescription. The Hydrocodon Acetaminophen 5-500 works fairly well but is there a strong one available? ## Hi Jack, The dosage of Acetaminophen in Vicodin range from 500mg, 660, and 750mgs. While for Hydrocodone the max dosages I've seen are 7.5mg and 10mg respectively. I believe "Vicodin HP" contains a dosage combination of 660mg + 10mg. The maximum dosage for this medication is 1-2 pills every 4-6 hours depending on severity of pain and that information changes with the max dosage allowable for Acetaminophen... which is not to exceed 1gram (1000mg) per dose/or 4 grams (4000mg) per day. Most however, tend to be white and oblong shaped. A new pain has developed in the side (kidney area) that is worse than the back pain. stopped taking tylenol a year ago for the same reason. what is going on? ## Even though you may have stopped taking Tylenol, the Vicodin you are taking 1 a day contains 500mg of Acetaminophen; which is the main ingredient in Tylenol. I'm no doctor, so I'm not certain what's going on in your system, but you may be better off switching to Oxycodone or something that doesn't contain Acetaminophen. Your doctor should be able to give you an answer as to why your body is reacting the way it is.

But I can see how the 10mg ones would be double that price because the non-acetaminophren part (the Hydrocodone itself) is the narcotic, but more than $1 a pill just doesn't seem right.
