I am wondering about an old prescription I have. The only date on the bottle is 3/2/2012. Is it safe to take? ## Hello, Smith1985! How are you? Prescription tablets have an expiration date of one year from the date they were dispensed to you by your pharmacy, because that is when they are removed from the factory sealed container and are exposed to the elements that cause degradation. After the expiration date, this medication does not get dangerous, but it does begin to lose effectiveness and will no longer work as well as when it was new. It would be best to dispose of it and see your doctor for a new prescription. Is there anything else I can help with? ## I have aleve that expired in march 2013, will it still work now that it is 3 years past the expiration date or should I just toss...

My prescription is dated january 2016 is it still good? ## Can i take naproxen dated 2016 is it still good to use for pain ## Hello Gigi, The short answer is no. The long answer is that the expiration date could mean multiple things ranging from the expectancy of the medication to maintain it's maximum level of potency. In some cases the medication would still be good but just not as effective as it was prior to the expiration date. On the other hand, some medication contains active ingredients and inactive ingredients that may deteriorate and make the medication react differently with you. Regardless of the safety of the medication, it will not be able to perform it's intended function at a desirable level and should be disposed of at your local drug drop off. If you feel like ...

I got the prescription in Jul 2009. There is no expiry date on the bottle. Is it still safe to take it after 4 years? ## Hi, Milica! Once the factory seal on a bottle of tablets has been broken, the expiration date is one year from the date you received it from your pharmacy. Naproxen doesn't get dangerous after it has expired, but it will start to lose potency, which means that after 4 years, they are virtually worthless and should just be disposed of properly. Please tell me the shelf life of Naproxen Sodium 550 mg. Thank you, Druchel Haley ## Every prescription medication, sold in the U.S. must have a shelf life of a year from the original fill-date. Common side effects may include: nausea, drowsiness, headache and stomach irritation. Filled at pharmacy on May 27, 2011. Are these still good to use for bursitis? ## Hi Maggie, Based on my research, you shouldn't take expired prescriptions. Purchased ALEVE 12 Hours Softgel Caps two and a half years ago. Are they still good? ## Hello, Shirley! How are you? What is the expiration date on the package? You should always go by that, because medications do tend to lose effectiveness over time and the gel caps may actually turn bad, so if they are expired, you should just dispose of them. The FDA classifies this medication as a NSAID and lists its typical side effects as possibly including nausea, dizziness, headache, stomach irritation and increased risk of bleeding.

I have a white oval tablet with 537 on one side and 93 on the other. Could this be a Naproxen? What strength is this and what is it's shelf life? ## Based on the description provided, I found your pill to be Naproxen sodium (550 mg). Naproxen is a non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug commonly used for the reduction of moderate to severe pain, fever, inflammation and stiffness. As far as the shelf life of Naproxen, most medications list an expiration date on the packaging. However you may need to ask your local pharmacy about the shelf life from the date it was purchased. My naproxen was filled 7/2011. Is it ok to take now (10-2012)?. ## Hi Turtle, There's actually a lot of conflicting information around the topic of expired medication, but according to a Harvard Medical School family health article, except in rare cases (i.e. tetracycline), there is little chance of danger due to taking medications even up to 15 years beyond their expiration date. This conclusion was based upon a study conducted at the request of the US military due to stockpiles of expensive drugs they could otherwise need to replace every few years. The conclusion was that 90% of those drugs remained effective 10 - 15 years after the expiration date. But the question is whether or not the drug you have happens to be one of these drugs from the study... (I have not seen the list of...

What kind of pill is this? Thanks. ## Lot numbers are internal numbers that are used by manufacturers to identify specific production runs of their products. In light of that, they do not actually identify any product or medication, because the some number could be used by several other companies. Thus, to identify one of their products, packaging, lot number, expiration and sometimes other details are required. Are there any markings on the tablets?
