I've experienced severe leg cramps during sleep. Eating an occasional Banana stopped the problem but I don't like Bananas. So I decided to try Potassium pills. I read on Webmd that the recommened dosage for prevention of Potassium deficiency is 20 mEq, which brings me to my question. The smallest dose I can find is 99 mg. Is 99 mg per day too much ? I asked the two assistance at the local GNC where I bought them and they said 99 mg per day is fine and that the body will only absorb what it needs. This doesn't sound right to me. ## The 99mgs is actually very low. You can't convert the mEqs to mgs, but I can assure you that the 99mgs is actually very low. The 20mEq is a dosage that's only available by prescription and only given when someone has tested and shown a seve...

How many milligrams is 20 meq? ## Hi Julee, According to nih.gov, 1500 mg is equivalent to 20 mEq (when referring to Potassium Chloride ER Tablets). I'm not sure which, if any, other medications are also measured in milliequivalents, so if you could please post back with a specific brand name or generic drug in mind, it may be easier to determine if the above information still applies to you or not. Is anyone else familiar with this type of measurement?

My wife was prescribed potassium years ago. Does not remember mg or meq.We assume it was 10or 20 meq.She is now taking Oct potassium 99mg.How many 99mg would she take to get 10meq? She is diabetic and keeps it under control. ## Hello, Nick! How are you? There is no actual conversion for this, these 99mg over the counter potassium supplements aren't even close to the amount available in the prescription tablets. Additionally, it is not safe to take that much, unless her doctors has said she is dangerously low in it and needs to supplement it. Is there anything else I can help with?

I have some Andrx 560 which I am told is 10 MEG. What's the difference between mg and Meq???? ## It stands for milliquivelents, which means that it contains that same amount as 10 meqs, which is a liquid measurement. Mgs stands for milligrams and is a dry measurement.

Hi I have been on 20 meq 3 times a day for a week. My potassium levels were at 2.2 at the time the doctor prescribed them for me. I am on 20 mg of lasix a day for kidney issues. I am going back to doc next week for more blood work. Do you think my levels will be increased greatly? ## They should improve over the week, but there's no way to say how much. I've generally found them to work very fast, though. The FDA warns that they can be very hard on the stomach, so they should be taken with food. As to the low potassium levels, Lasix has been known to cause that, so you might want to ask your doctor about switching to a potassium sparing diuretic. Is there anything else I can help with?

I was taken one 10 MEQ of potassium once a day. Now they tell me I need to take 50 mg a day, but I called the pharmacy and they said that I need to take two of 10 MEQ capsules a day. So that is 20 meq. But is that too much potassium in a day? Because potassium comes in MEQ not mg. So should I take 2 tabs a day or go back to just 1 tab a day? They said that the 10 meq is equal to 750 mg so that is 1500 mg a day. Is that going to be to much potassium. ## I am taking one 10 meq of citrate potassium 4 times a day, 1 chiorthalidone 25 mg, & 2, 20 meg potassium cl er micro, i have my blood checked each month my potassium is always low & lately i am very itchy on my arms. Potassium Chlor Er 750 mg ( 10 MEQ) Where can I get this at a reasonable price as I am on a fixed income $22,000/yr ## Potassium Chlor Er 750 mg ( 10 MEQ) Where can I get this at a reasonable price as I am on a fixed income $22,000/yr ## I can't really suggest anything, since I don't know where you are located. Have you tried contacting local pharmacies to get price quotes? I had to pick up the 20meqs and here in the Seattle area, since this is a generic, it was only around $20 for 30 tablets.

I use this and am looking for a new supplier ## Finding a new supplier really depends on where you are located, and what's available in your region. It also depends on whether or not you are looking for a prescription pill vs pure powder form or other OTC variations. The FDA deemed that (over the counter) supplements can only have up to 99 mg of elemental Potassium per pill and 100 mg or higher requires a prescription…so a prescription could be several times more potent, saving you from taking several pills a day of a supplement. NOTE: Orally, Potassium Chloride is toxic "in excess". In the U.S. Potassium Chloride (powdered form) is manufactured by several companies which you can view in the link below (near the top of the list): Other Potassium Chloride br...

Hi my wife is taking. She had a trip to the hospital that resulted in this as well as several other RX. Am curious to know just how much potassium is this in English? And what is a normal daily intake of Potassium? Thank you. ## Hi Ed, Sorry to hear about your wife having to go to the hospital. I hope she's doing a lot better as of the time you posted this thread. Concerning the dosage of 20 mEq, this translates to 1500 mg (milligrams). In terms of what amount someone is supposed to have each day, it may vary depending on several factors (i.e. things like: age, pregnancy, breastfeeding, hypertension, renal disorders, etc)... However, for the average adult, colostate.edu recommends a dosage of 4,700 mg per day. Hope this helps! ## Are you sure about the recommendation of 4700 mg of p...

What does the MEQ stand for? I know MG, and Mcg, but I have never heard of MEQ before ## Hello, Jackie! How are you? It stands for milliequivalents, the prefix milli denotes that the measure has been multiplied by 1,000. The FDA classifies this as a supplement, it can be very harsh on the stomach and should be taken with food. Is there anything else I can help with? ## Thank you for your answer. My husband had a Heart Attack several years ago and while he was in the hospital the doctor only gave him 150 mg and then reduced it to 75 mg. They also said really high doses could cause heart stoppage. My Potassium was 3.1 and according to the report I got said that 3.4 was normal and I can't really see 1500 mg of Potassium was necessary. What is your opinion.

I am a thyroidectomy hyperthyroidism 45 year old female with hypokalemia on 30 meq's a day but I also take 80 mgs of Lasix. 9 out of ten times my potassium is low but I have been eating so much food with potassium that mine was at 10 last time and I was in the emergency room and I cannot find a doctor, not at a hospital in my area that doesn't have a 3 month wait. Is there a way to get your blood taken without an emergency room? I have insurance, just do not trust hospitals. They treat you like a rotating door and you never accomplish anything. HELP. PLEASE. ## Your doctor can order blood work, some blood draws are done right at their office, or at the hospital lab, but neither requires you to go to the ER. What reason did they give for a 3 month wait? Usually, if you've had...

I am taking 10 mg lasix twice daily and 20 meq potassium daily. Is this a good ratio? ## Hello, Eugene! How are you? Are these the doses your doctor has prescribed? There's really no definitive rate that I can give you for how much potassium Lasix depletes from the body, it can vary from person to person. Have you actually tested as being low in potassium? The FDA lists the typical side effects of Lasix as possibly including nausea, dizziness, increased urination, hypotension and dehydration. The potassium is known to irritate the stomach, so it should only be taken with food.

Drug interaction Want to no if I can take these 4 potassium pills for 2 days with my other daily medications ## Hello, Mare! How are you? As long as your doctor has approved it, then yes, they can be taken together. The FDA classifies potassium as a supplement and it can cause stomach pain and nausea, so it should be taken with food. The more pressing question, I think, is if your potassium is low, why do they still have you on the Hydrochlorothiazide? It is a diuretic and well known to cause potassium loss. Stopping it and switching to a different one might easily solve the problem. You may want to ask your doctor about it. Typical side effects to it may also possibly include nausea, headache, dehydration and increased urination. ## in the morning I take Glimepiride 2 mg, Amlodipine-be...

I was taking potassium cl er 20meq & im out of them so im trying to find something equivalent to that over the counter. How many 99 milligrams of potassium can I take to make one 20 meq dose? ## Juli's answer is correct: 20 mEq is approximately 1,485 mg. The conversion between mg and mEq is a bit tricky and requires some chemistry knowledge but I will note the calculations below. "A milligram, abbreviated mg, is a metric unit of mass or weight defined as one thousandth of a gram. A milliequivalent is a measure of the quantity of ions in an electrolyte fluid. One milliequivalent is one thousandth of one mole of charges and is represented by the symbol mEq. The ions of different elements vary in mass, so it is necessary to know the atomic or molecular weight of the ions and th...

How much mEq would equal 5 mg of potassium? There was a problem with my 12 year old's rx from the dr. He is on it to prevent kidney stones and cant pick it up till like June. I was wondering until then what do i do with the mEq over the counter? ## 5mgs of Potassium converts to 0.128 mEq according to this converter. What was the problem with the Rx that is delaying your being able to pick it up? That doesn't make sense, if there are issues, they should be able to contact his doctor for a solution.

Diabetic- stage 4 kidney failure on 40 mg Lasix daily 80 meq Potassium Chloride ER daily. Seems like a lot of Potassium. Doctor won't talk to me about it just tells me to take it. ## The medication Lasix is used to help remove excess fluid from the body, but while doing so, it also tends to remove potassium, which is why such supplements are often prescribed along with it. 80meq is not really that high of a dose. It is very important to maintain a good potassium level as being either too high or too low can both cause dangerous health problems. The FDA warns that it is very rough on the stomach and should be taken with food. Is there anything else I can help with?
