My primary care Dr. was giving me Amlodipine for high blood pressure. It was working well along with Lisinopril to keep my blood pressure in check but my legs and ankles began to swell so she took me off of the Amlodipine as leg/ankle swelling are a side effect. Then I was admitted into the hospital and the Dr. there gave me Metoprolol. Now my legs are swelling again and if I am correct in what I am finding Amlodipine and Metoprolol are the same thing? ## Hello Anne, The NIH reports that metoprolol is abeta1-selective(cardioselective) adrenoceptor blocking agent and that amlodipine is a calcium channel blocker. While both of these medications have different active and inactive ingredients and are different types of blockers they both list ankle swelling as a potential side effect. The r...

I'm sorry, but it is hard to provide you with accurate information, without knowing more specifics. Can you please post back and clarify? Depending on the new medication, it could take a couple weeks to a month, or more, since most medications in this class can cause these symptoms as side effects, according to the FDA. However, things may be different if they gave you a medication that helps remove the fluid that is causing the edema. ## My Dr switched me to METOPROLOL 25 MG per day. It brought my bp down...
