Does amox tr-k have any potency left after 6 years? ## Hello, Barc! How are you? I bought 100 amoxicillin caps about 3 years ago and stored them in a dark place and I was curious if they would still be good to take. ## does amoxicillin expire ## don't use it. amoxicillin goes bad a year from when you bought it. ## Actually, no, it does not go bad, it just loses efficacy, so it is not as strong or as potent as when you first bought, starting from about 18 months past the manufacture date. You should never self-diagnose or self-treat with antibiotics anyway, there are so many other conditions that will not respond to them, so they have no effect, and you of course run the risk of developing an antibiotic resistant strain of something with overuse, so please see your doctor. ## First of all, why do you just have the drug sitting around? Did you take it and not fini...

Hi, I was just wondering if liquid Amoxicillin actually goes bad & could possibly harm someone, or does it just lose its potency? For example, liquid Amoxicillin kept in fridge the whole time, not quite a month old...there's no expiration date anywhere on the bottle, & there was extra left over after it was administered correctly for 10 days. Does it "go bad"/spoil like a food would? Thanks! ## Hello, Ricky! How are you? Yes, it can go sour and, while it wouldn't actually be harmful, it could cause nausea, vomiting and stomach cramps, if taken once expired, as reported by the FDA. Most liquids are only good for a few weeks, but the pharmacy should be able to give a more precise date. Is there anything else I can help with? ## Amoxicillin is actually only good for...

how long after med expires is it still good for ## Hello, Timmy! How are you? The best way to think of the expiration date would be to actually consider it a guaranteed full potency date. That is the maximum time that the manufacturer can guarantee that the drug will have its full beneficial effect under the most commonly used storage conditions. Past that date, the efficacy level starts to drop. Now, antibiotics can be more problematic than many other medications, because once they start to lose effectiveness, they may not properly eradicate infectious bacteria, which may result in antibiotic resistance, making things even worse. Additionally, if your doctor prescribed it to treat an infection and you didn't finish it all, as you are supposed to, then you are also running that same...

I have some amoxicilina 500 mg. july 2008 can it be used ## Hi mary, I honestly wouldn't recommend using any expired antibiotics that are more than a couple months old. That's just me personally. Reason being is that certain ones can actually become toxic after the expiration date, making them more harmful than they are good. If it were any other type of drug I would say yes, as most properly stored medications can last up to 10-15 years beyond their expiration date (according to a study done by Harvard University). Do you have access to a doctor for a new prescription?
May i take it for a UTI? It expired 2014. ## Unless a specific bacteria is detected that can be treated by this medication, it is not usually the preferred on to treat a UTI. I am self treating a sinus infection. Started with 3 days of Cephalexin which I had from an infected finger. Also have 4 days of Amox from my sister. New job and can't take off to go to the doctor. Can I go from one to the other? Thanks! ## I should have mentioned that neither of the drugs is expired. Thanks for your thoughts! ## You shouldn't, what you really need is 10days worth of one continuous antibiotic. I know it's a pain to take off work to go to the doctor, but it's something that we all have to do sometimes. And, if you don't have enough of one antibiotic to treat an infection, you run the risk of developing antibiotic resistance, which would make you even more ill and you may end up with a much longer time period off of work, due to being in the hospital. ...

They expire in June so I won't be using them. ## Hi smokey, Based on my research, it should be ok for your dog as long as you're administering the correct dosage. The recommended dosage of Amoxicillin + Clavulanic acid is listed at 12.5mg (per kilogram of body weight). That amount is to be taken twice daily for treating most general infections (including UTI's). If you have any other questions pertaining to proper dosing or administration, you may also want to contact a local veterinary office, since they are well versed in this field of study.
