Xarelto Fluid Retention (Page 5)

Updated

I had to take Xarelto due to two sinus venous thrombosis in my head. 8 weeks of heparin injections showed no side effects. But with the first day of taking Xarelto my body reacted by retaining water. Within the first three weeks I gained 24.46 lb hill exercising 5 times a week and eating as I always did. After retaining more and more water I stopped taking it after three months. I started with a weight of 120 lb at a height of 5''8 and now I weigh 157 lb. I have to ad that I started taking it in the middle of March and stopped taking it at the end of June. I was not able to loose any water/weight. I eat less than I always did before even while I exercise. All doctors couldn't find the one thing that changed through Xarelto. Has anybody ever experienced something like this while taking Xarelto??

I have been trying lemon water... I have lost about 3 pounds in 2 weeks... I just put 2-3 thin lemon slices in a 16-20 ounce bottle of water...I feel like it is actually helping with the water weight not just my regular body weight... I also reuse the lemon for a couple of rebuild because we have one of those 5gal bottle water dispensers... At the very least I am drinking more water.

@ HateXareltoinSC - Definitely talk to your doctor about switching to Warfarin. It should stabilize the weight gain and is a safer med as its history is known & the 'thinning' properties are reversible with a Vit. K shot. If you do switch to Warfarin, you may have to self-inject during a bridge period as Warfarin takes a few days to ramp up. If you do make the switch, I strongly suggest getting your blood level monitoring done by an ant-coagulation clinic. It definitely made my life easier & is worth it to be off Xarelto (35 lb gain in 6 weeks with decreased appetite).

I just reported the unusual weight gain to the FDA via their MedWatch program.

It still boggles my mind that they do not even acknowledge the existence of the problem we are all facing.. Much less offer some help for it

@ tndrhrt57 - First "They" need to know we are having the problem... I recommend reporting it to the FDA Medwatch via their online form. The more reports they get, the more likely they will look into it.

Reported a couple months ago... And will urge others to do the same... This fluid retention has done so much more than weight gain... My BP fluctuates like crazy.. And my stamina is at an all time low too...I would be in for any legal action too

Hi . It's Tamara. i still haven't lost the water weight I gained from xarelto. Stopped taking it in May 2016, and still look and feel 8mo's pregnant. Tired and heavy limbs. Work out 5 days a week 1 1/2 hrs., plus walk 3miles daily. It's exhausting and depressing what this drug has done to us. I'd be in!!

Hey everyone! So I'm just touching base with everyone who's still dealing with the xarelto weight gain mystery. My CBC blood tests turned up with nothing. My next step is to see an endocrinologist & hematologist. I refuse to acknowledge or accept the change in my body as a "new normal" for me. I am getting in touch with a lawyer today & I urge everyone to share their latest experiences on this forum as I will be letting him know of this site. All we want is for someone to acknowledge this "rare" situation & to offer a substantial "cure" for it. If dr's & xarelto refuse to acknowledge this symptom then how can they offer a fix for us? This strange semi permanent & in most cases permanent weight gain must be listed as a "potential" side effect so that anyone who is urged to take this medication is warned of this possible strange side effect!

I would bet this undisclosed side effect isn't as rare as they would like us to believe... I have been trying to think of a way to find others... Any ideas?

Now we know the reason the doctors don't seem to care...

I am in for any legal action as well - this is a dangerous drug and people should be made aware of these potential side effects. Question - is there anything common between those of us that have been impacted? Say for example our blood type?
I am O negative - anyone else with the same? (just searching for an answer)

Caveman... I was thinking about that also... However as far as blood type I believe I am A+...I know my cholesterol is slightly elevated but nothing of the charts... I was a former smoker; quit for my surgery and was using nicotine patches during part of my xarelto treatment...I was thinking also about drug interactions. It is a puzzle for sure. The only thing I have done that has helped any so far is drinking water with 2 slices if lemon as my preferred beverage of the day. I know as upset as we all are about this we won't rest until we find an answer.

Hi everybody. I remember someone posting that xarelto is very protein binding, and lowers your thrombocyte levels. A couple things could be at play: We could have leaky capillaries. Humans require a certain level of protein for effective water balance.Someone with a protein deficiency may find it harder to get the water from the tissue spaces back into the capillaries. The enlarged abdomens of the malnourished are mainly caused by lack of protein. When inflamation is present, histamine is released. Histamine causes gaps between the cells of the capillary walls to widen, making them more leaky. Some remedies I've read include: Coumarin rich foods(especially parsley and celery) Coumarin helps macrophages break up proteins which have leaked into the tissue space. Also: Raise legs several times a day to improve circulation, support stockings, Foods high in antioxidants-strawberries,green tea, brusel sprouts, beans, onions apples, citrus, Also quercetin, rutin, to help repair capillaries. 100%cocoa, (has 2x's as wine, and 3x's as green tea of antioxidants. Vitamin B, Turmeric and Magnesium. I also take Green Vibrance daily. A diuretic could actually make our problem worse I've read.

Tndrhrt57 I think your totally on to something w/the lemon water!! For the last 7 days or since u posted that I've been drinking the juice of one whole lemon in a large glass of water every day on an empty stomach 2hrs b4 a meal & I have noticed the slightest change in my skin's elasticity as well as my calf size. My hunter rain boots used to be loose before xarelto, then I couldn't even get them on now they fit again! They are still very snug but at least they fit again! I am going to continue this ritual every day & check back w/everyone in 3 weeks. I urge everyone to do the same & let's check back in 3 weeks! GLTA!!

I have been on Xarelto now for a little over a month. I fell a lot of pressure on my stomach and my stomach is very hard to the touch. Do you recommend that I stop taking these pills?

Don't go off it without talking to your doctor and finding some sort of alternative to treat the condition you are talking it for.... I was lucky and only had to take it for 6 months for a blood clot but I gained about 27 pounds of fluid in my abdomen, hips and thighs.

Hi. I remember someone saying in the blog don't take fish oil pills or vitamin E while on xarelto. I took it the whole time I was on it. I wonder if that made a difference?

I didn't take anything like that because I knew it would make me more susceptible to a bleeding incident and I still got the fluid weight... It might make the fluid retained greater but not sure

It's interesting that we all gained on average 25lbs of fluid. My stomach still looks like i'm 7mo's pregnant. Uncomfortable. My calves and breasts feel heavy as well. I had a dvt in my left leg from groin down to calf. Was on xarelto almost 6mo's. I remember my gyno telling me I had fibroids a couple of years ago. She put me on Lo Loestrin and said eventually they'd go away on their own as I got older (less hormones). I've since read it's widely known that fibroids can lead to DVT's???
