Hey bid! Yes it's that way for a lot of people. Vyvanse will slowly but surely take everything from you if your not careful. It can be very hard to see all the bad it's doing to you also, so please be carefull. I would suggest getting off of it as soon as possible before it takes more of your life away. Turn to Jesus and he will heal you and give you your happiness back. This vyvanse is from the devil and I urge anyone who can to quit while they are still ahead! God is the answer to get your life back scott, vyvanse will only take more of it away.

Denise,

I would talk to your doctor as soon as possible because I don't think Vyvanse should be given to a child who is 5 years old. He might be better off taking Ritalin or something else like that, because Vyvanse in my opinion would be way too strong for someone his age to take. Taking any narcotic and stopping it cold turkey will cause severe withdraws. My advice is to find him a more suitable medication as soon as possible.

This is very helpful. I am 24 and work full time and go to college. I have been taking vyvanse ever since its been on the market. It is amazing and sometimes a blessing but it also is a crutch. I take it during the work week for energy and focus due to ADD and it helps but I find myself needing breaks from it, it makes my heart race and makes me nervous, anxious, and different than i normally am. I worry about being on meds forever and I dont want to take ANYTHING while pregnant so I am wondering if I should stop taking within the next few months or wait til i am finished with school? I am worried I wont be able to function without it. But I think after the withdraws are over, I may have a chance to not rely on it like I always have. Please give me some advice.

I was prescribed vyvanse about a year ago Due to the fact I had a tendency to be impulsive and couldn't seem to focus on school work or any long term task for that matter. I started on 40mg switched up to 50 about 6 months in keep on mind I'm a 21 year old female college student at like 130 lbs. During that increase I started preparation for a fitness competition and being on vyvanse helped me remain on track especially since it so happened to be an appetite suppressant. I have never had issue with dropping weight and about 3 months into my strenuous diet and workout regiment I noticed a change in me. I was angry all the time, couldn't sleep and when I did it was never relaxing I was depressed and felt like a zombie. I've never had this feeling before and I have dieted like this many times. On top of all of that I wasn't dropping any weight which I found to be really strange considering how clean I was eating and how I was training every day. Something in me told me the vyvanse had something to do with it so I began to taper off the medication slowly. It was hard and I was nervous but I began to be able to sleep again and the weight started dropping again. I'm currently still in the process of coming completely off vyvanse and I recently had my blood work done with a naturopath to see how my body was doing. I have never had issues hormonoly before taking vyvanse but when the lab came back it said my testosterone, AND estrogen were very low and my thyroid and adrenal glands weren't functioning. My doctor felt the vyvanse strong stimulant was the cause Nd since my body was always being force to run so high that it burned out my hormones. As I said before I'm still in the process of adjusting my hormones back to normal but I'm almost 100 percent sure the cause was the vyvanse for my issues. Don't get me wrong it has it's benefits and definetly helps but I suggest to not use it unless completely nessicary and if you do be careful about how much your taking and pay attention to your body and more important the health of your mind.

Debra, There is no way to know how your son will react. Each person is unique. So don't take what anyone else says to mean that it will be the same for your son.

Have you heard of Dr. Charles Parker? He wrote the book "New Medication Rules for ADHD: Brain Science and Common Sense." You should check out his website, Core Psych. I believe he also has some videos on YouTube.

Dr. Parker recommends a method called "water titration" for starting young children on Vyvanse in order to ease them into it more gradually and reduce possible side effects. You can find the instructions for it on his website (please read them carefully and consult your doctor). What you do is take the 20 mg capsule (the lowest available), break it open, and mix the contents with 4 ounces of water. It can then be stored in the fridge and given over 4 days, one ounce at a time, to provide a 5 mg dose. The dosage can then be increased in 5 mg increments up to the 20 mg.

Five years of age is very young to be starting on Vyvanse and I would be concerned too if it were my son. But the Vyvanse is probably a better choice than the Adderall, IMHO.

My 21 year old son is addicted and will not admit it. I am at a loss as to how to help him. He's in college and his entire junior year has been a nightmare regarding his grades, hygiene and social skills. What do you suggest I do to get him to own up to his addiction and where do you go for help?

ADD medication can cause a B vitamin deficiency, especially vitamin B12. You can get B12 shots or take the vitamins prescribed by your doctor in capsule form. I wouldn't get it over the counter as the capsule shell is made with other additives. B12 will help restore your energy levels, neurotransmitter activity, and memory loss! I was taking ADD medication for 6 years including vyvanse and I started using B12 with the medication as I slowly weaned off of it. Its safe to use in both and will help with withdrawal. Oh yeah, drink lots of water too. Good luck! :)

Hey it really only takes a couple of weeks to 1 month. The main thing is to try and push yourself a little harder each day so your body will get used to it. The longer you let it keep you down the harder it will be.

I started ADHD meds when i was only 8 years old, I was very similar to your son. I couldn't get anything done without it and it really did help. As a child, it is so important to do well in school and get grades for a bright future. I think he really should be on it if needed and when he gets older he may not need it. I am 25 now and still have ADHD. I have been off my meds since April and I am in college. I still would do better on it however with the side effects and turning to other resources , it is doable where as when I was a child I wouldnt have gotten through school without.

Theresa, what you just said scares me, as I believe this is EXACTLY how my wife feels. I have been on 70mg of Vyvanse for almost 2 weeks now. Before that, I was on 50mg for 2 weeks. All together, I've been on Vyvanse for a little over a month. I can relate to how your husband is feeling because I too, get feelings of severe anger, irritability, hostility and resentment when the Vyvanse wears off. It's like I can't control my emotions and I can't understand why. My wife will come home from work and I'll ruin her good mood just by being in another one of my terrible moods. I love her so much and it kills me to see her get upset with the withdrawal symptoms. I feel bitter towards her and everything she does (or doesn't do) annoys the living s*** out of me. I don't know what to do at this point; take a higher dose so that I'm "chemically induced" into happiness, or back off and not feel as bad. My doctor also put me on dexostat with the 70mg of Vyvanse. Perhaps this is intensifying the effect? Just know that how your husband feels/is acting is the drug talking. Before I was on "ADD medicine," I never knew how legit the controversy is with it being a street drug. Now I know. Good luck!

My son is 7bout to be 8 he has been taking vyvanse for a lol over a year..at first the med was great he was focused did all his homework no problems.
but as the months prolonged I started noticing some twerks about his behavior as he was coming down off for the day his eyes would twitch uncontrollably and he would have fits of anger r just burst out crying and the doc that prescribed him the meds siad it was just a side effect..needless to say I kept giving it to him and then the nightmares started so bad he didn't want to sleep alone and the twitching got worse. As I explained all of this to the doc she insisted it was just the side effects..tjen he got to where he didn't have an appetite none whatsoever..i would have to give him colodine just to help him "come down"..so my parents being the all naturalist they are had me read one of their books on natural medicines on ADHD..it said higher doses of fish oil the recommended amount for each individual needs could help with his ADHD..so I went to the health food store and talked with the young lady that was there and she helped out alot she also had ADHD and was prescribed the same meds..she had me drop his doses of vyvanse while also taking the supplements vitamins and I'll tell u it was hard and now he is drug free and no withdrawals all by lowering the doses each week while taking the supplements and he's has his appetite the nightmares are gone and so are the twitches..i didn't have a question just wanted to share my story..

You should try to get off it before it completely ruins your life like it has so many others. The longer you stay on it the longer it will take for you to recover and feel like a normal person again.you can focus in school without a drug to help you, it just takes applying yourself.
Don't let Drs tell you that you have to have a drug to be able to do well in school, it is just a lie. God gifted you with the abilities you need to be able to focus and do well.. You are talented and gifted, don't let this drug take that away from you..

I do not have ADHD and have taken vyvanse 30mg twice before for studying and it was very motivational and organized me and helped me a lot (for a sec i did think i have ADHD). The other day i took 20mg with no problems again, and the day after that another 20mg. Within a couple of hours of that second day I had a severe panic attack, severe shortness of breath, felt suffocated, and the panic attack lasted until i went for work at 4pm which was a distraction. The next morning i thought it was gone, but in the afternoon at 3pm the panic attack and hard breathing came again until i fell asleep at 10pm. it was horrifying. This morning i still feel shortness of breath but am trying not to freak out as to not start a panic attack. during these 3 days i wanted to seek medical attention but i cannot. I am a 17yr old female living with my mom and i could not tell her as to not disappoint her. I will never play with amphetamines again, especially vyvanse, i believe it's poison & highly addictive, i am just worried that this shortness of breath has not stopped and i shouldn't really be withdrawling because i only took it twice recently. any thoughts?

Hey why don't you find somewhere else to run your mouth off.. By now most everyone knows the dangers of vyvanse. Getting talked down to by you every few days helps no one..

I have experienced every single long-term side effect you've described. Everything from the feelings of displacement and dissociation to the intense withdrawals (days without vyvanse consist of eating, sleeping, and hours in bed on youtube). I have been on vyvanse for 3 1/2 years, and I began at 50mg/day. After 6 months I was taking 70mg/day, and then after about 2 years I began taking 140mg (2 70mg capsules) per day. I am currently trying to taper down my dose, but so far it's been a miserable failure. Vyvanse has thrown me into an insomnia-chronic depression-anxiety feedback loop that I'm absolutely certain I won't escape without serious treatment or divine intervention. So to anyone who might be reading this and has recently begun taking stimulant ADD meds- be conscious of the risks. If you find yourself needing to make 'tradeoffs' because of your medication's side-effects (ie, sacrificing sleep for good grades, or forgoing healthy eating habits for all-day focus at school), run while you can. Even if you take your medication exactly as prescribed (as I did), your body will still respond as it would to ANY potent stimulant. Over time, you'll experience tolerance. Dependence. Worsening anxiety. Insomnia. Depression. Mood/personality changes. Paradoxical fatigue and lack of motivation. It's only worth it until it's not. Please be careful and remember that your personal health and happiness comes first. And of course, always express your questions and concerns to your doctor.

Take care, and best of luck. :)

Yeah, actually most people who take it have improved lives. Because of spikes with adderall, I would have meltdowns and anxiety attacks. Vyvanse is long acting and consistent, and helped me so much. Vyvanse is claimed to be addictive, but as a researcher of psychopharmacology, there is not much validity to this claim. There are severe side effects. Also vyvanse's half life is 12 hours, so you cannot have withdrawal symptoms from it for days. I'm not pushing the drug, I'm just saying as a non-biased researcher, these claims make me suspicious. People often abuse the drug, but for studying, being able to stay up for nights on end, not really because they are addicted... High doses are lethal, but small doses aren't, and are very beneficial. I have accidentally taken too much and have had hallucinations, sickness, dilated pupils, confusion, and a near death reaction, but that was when I confused my sisters 50mg with my 10mg, and ended up taking 5 50s instead of 5 10s with a red bull to wash it down (my senior year of high school). When taken correctly, it can change your life.
