What Not To Say During Suboxone Appt (Page 5) (Top voted first)

Updated

My boyfriend has battled with heroin addiction for at least 2 years now. He was prescribed to before, but couldn't afford the maintenance program and ended up banging heroin again. He went back to his doctor to get a script for suboxone again last week, and the doctor wouldn't prescribe it to him. I found another dr who can prescribe suboxone nearby, and want to make sure he gets a script because he will die if he doesn't quit using. Does anyone know any reasons why a dr wouldn't prescribe suboxone?
Thanks.

I have been on pain meds for 6 years. There are not enough pills to help the pain. My doctor suggested suboxone for pain - I am scared. I am on morphine now and never have enough for the month

Where did u find a Doc who prescribes subutex? I'm in Virginia and need to find a provider who will. They all prefer SubOxone.

You do realize many people TRUST their doctors to get them free of legitimate pain and don't realize the side effects of coming off these drugs, such as withdrawal, until it's too late, right?! Even still you're completely off base, but that's just one example where your "choice" point seems pretty moot to me. Why don't you make a "choice" to educate your mind and check your ugly, judgmental VERBAL DIARRHEA (as JM ALABAMA so rightfully called it) at the door.

To JM Alabama or anyone else really educated (or preferably with personal experience) on suboxone: Just to quickly give you background. I was put on oxy's and other strong pain meds 12 years ago, and was told I'd "feel crappy for a few days when I was without them" - the understatement of the century! Anyway, about 6 years ago I got put on methadone plus Dilaudid for the pain because I found that with methadone I could take it really for the pain, and not just to feel normal and keep away the withdrawal. No more waking up in the middle of the night in the sweats if I happened to sleep an hour too long, feeling like I wanted to die. It totally has a ceiling effect for me; I can take more on days when I'm hurting and less on days when I'm not and feel no different. I feel normal on it and I'm not on a maintenance program so I don't have to go anywhere everyday. Problem is, I still feel trapped, cuz I know if I don't have it how I will feel, and I just really want to try and get off of everything altogether and evaluate the situation fresh. I was interested in trying suboxone, but on reading some posts that the withdrawal is as bad as anything else, I'm rethinking even trying it and just sticking with my current medical program. BTW, please, please be realistic with the withdrawal symptoms of this drug...I'm not trying to give a sob story but I know from past experience I cannot make it thru withdrawal. My sanity can't take it at this point and my daughter already only has one parent because her father/my husband committed suicide I believe in part to withdrawal, and I will be in the same place if I make the wrong move; I just know it. Also, how is suboxone for pain? Am I just trading one vice for another or can I really get clean with this suboxone...not maintained on something - clean? Suggestions/advice? Good luck to everyone out there, no matter what your situation or why you're using <3.

I have just found out my partner is using,he hid it from me for a year.He told me he hasnt injected whilst with me but abuses pills, oxy's serrapax, whatever he can cocktail for that feeling.I have no idea about these drugs,i was addicted to ice for two years and then speed for 4 years, and have been clean for 18 months.I have no idea what to expect,i told him i would help him and stand by him as he agreed to do the subutex programme, the doc give him other pills to see him through till he starts the programme.I cant stand to even look at him while he is off his face, but i do love him and want to help,it just frustrates me and sometimes i get really angry at him for lieing to me in the first place. Please can someone explain the torment?, i've been told to run a mile from this man, knowing my own battle with addictions, this would be the end for me.

Only a licensed therapist can prescribe subs. I was taking 4 to 6 norco a day from my Dr, so when I got dope sick my first time I went to the er because I didn't know what was happening to me. They just shot me up with daludin and gave me a Rx for more norco???? You have to go to a methadone/sub Dr.

Hi Dani (and anyone else), The threads don't flow in a way that I am following well, but I will do my best. I am a medical doctor who is Board Certified in Addiction Medicine and also have a special license to prescribe buprenorphine. Only doctors are legally allowed to prescribe any compound containing buprenorphine (the active ingredient in Suboxone and Subutex, and they just released a new form called Zubsolv). The reason that a doctor will not prescribe Subutex, is because the FDA and DEA limit doctors to prescribing one of the types of burprenorphine that also contain Naloxone. Suboxone and Zubsolv contain this Naloxone (as well as the active ingredient buprenorphine). When buprenorphine is by itself, it is also called Subutex. The DEA and FDA do allow for doctors to prescribe Subutex/just buprenorphine in VERY SPECIAL circumstances only.
Dani, if you have any special questions I will do my best to answer. (Please note that the comments and information contained within my posts do not imply direct medical advice nor is it an attempt to establish a doctor-to-patient relationship.)

I am not Dana, but would like to reply. I have a question for a doctor (understanding that this is not patient/doctor relation and that you hold no liability to the answer). The maximum dosage for Suboxone is 32mg per day - why are doctors now only prescribing 24 mg as maximum and most recent are trying to aim more toward 12 mg per day ? What has changed so drastically ?

Hi Tyler,

Not all suboxone doctors are mean and bad. The first sub doctor I went to was very knowledgeable about subs and was also a nice guy. He was full (they can only take so many patients beacuse of DEA rule) the second time I decided to go on subs again so I went to a different sub dr. He was an ok guy but didn,t seem to know much about subs.

Theres good and bad sub doctors just like doctors in other fields.

Hey Middle aged,

I,m not a doctor. Maybe suboxone drs. are starting to smarten up. Maybe there starting to realize that in most cases they don,t need to prescribe such high doses. Suboxone is incredibly strong. This is just my opinion.

Amen. Anyone spending 12 hours a day reading about finding opiates and flying 1000 miles a month for an opioid scrip is FAR too much of an addict to be giving anyone here advice.

Because this country would rather see people stay messed up instead of getting better I'm on suboxin and its cost me 2500.00 dollars for the last 6months I owe everybody and can't afford no more so it looks like I'm going to have to do the same its the doctos and the suboxin clinics and the FDA what you need to do is go to the er every day and maybe they will learn not to take advantage of people who are trying to get help if you got Coventry cares they are a crooked company and need to be put out of business anyway job

I need to get back on subs I was doing great then I went to jail for child support, got out and stayed on ocs. It seems that it takes two to three weeks to get in to a sub Dr. I can't tolerate the withdraws and have no insurance. Is there anyway to get a next day appt with a sub Dr? If I wait three weeks I might as well quit, but I can't go cold turkey and I just lost my opiate connection. I'm very scared about tomorrow. Cold turkey from snorting h, and chewing 80 mgs of ocs a day for two months without a day off, I'm afraid I'll stop breathing. I go into panic attacks when I go cold turkey. Is there anything I can say or do to get in to a sub Dr tomorrow or the next day?

You can always go to an ER, they are (by LAW) allowed to give a 3 day supply of Suboxone. They might try to say they can't...but they CAN..it's fact!! If you get to the point where you have to argue with them about what they can prescribe though, chances are you won't get sub anyway...so it's prolly a moot point to try and reason with an ER doc. They have this thing about a junkie telling them that they don't know what they are talking about, and get all uppidy about it if you try to say they are wrong -- for some reason, most doctors are above that "being wrong" crap.

Other than ER...look on the naabt website for docs in your area..start calling and don't stop until you find one. A little known fact, you can also call psychiatrists, though many don't specialize in addiction medicine, most are licensed to write Suboxone...but you can call and see...
I wouldn't quit until you find one, because if you wait, you sure aren't gonna feel like calling around later once the withdrawals hit...
