What Not To Say During Suboxone Appt (Page 3) (Top voted first)

Updated

My boyfriend has battled with heroin addiction for at least 2 years now. He was prescribed to before, but couldn't afford the maintenance program and ended up banging heroin again. He went back to his doctor to get a script for suboxone again last week, and the doctor wouldn't prescribe it to him. I found another dr who can prescribe suboxone nearby, and want to make sure he gets a script because he will die if he doesn't quit using. Does anyone know any reasons why a dr wouldn't prescribe suboxone?
Thanks.

As others have posted, you have to look up a "Suboxone" doctor in your area, only a few are allowed to prescribe it. With him, I believe that all you have to say is "I have been addicted to opiates most of my life off and on, and I want to get off it for good". When asked, tell him, heroin, or as with me, mixed with being hooked on Vicodin at various times and back and forth. That's what Suboxone is for. To help you to stop being addicted to all of that other sh*t. You do have to stop doing the other stuff. Take as directed, exactly as directed, Suboxone only. You can't sneak in any of that other sh*t, they'll also test your urine to make sure you are not f*cking around. I cannot imagine what your friend said in order to NOT get it.

Most people will find that it's easier to get on Suboxone than it is Methadone, because starting out Methadone requires a person to come in every single day for doses...and it takes a while to build up to getting a "take home"...and even then, they usually won't give over 2 weeks of methadone at once. Now and then you'll find one that might go 1 month, but it takes a LOT of clean drug tests to get that...because methadone can still be abused. Suboxone, however... can be done monthly from the first visit. And now there are generics for Suboxone out as well, so the price isn't a big deal as it used to be...and on top of that...Suboxone cannot be abused. Once you take over about 16mg of Suboxone, it does you no good whatsoever to take anymore that day...because of the ceiling effect that Suboxone has. Once you get a certain level in your blood stream, the suboxone has no extra effect at all, and you're essentially just wasting the med by taking more than the ceiling amount.

Here is the skinny on withdrawal and migration from opiates to Suboxone, a mixture of burenorphine and naloxone. (note; suboxone is a trade name subutex is buprenorphine, an opiate based compound. Nalexone is an opiate antagonist used to block opiate receptors and to reverse narcotic overdose.) If you have a doctor or some access to Subutex it is much easier to switch from Heroin or methadone, morphine, etc., by using a strong dose of subutex for two weeks and then switching to suboxone. It is not advised to switch straight to suboxone as it does precipitate withdrawal. I know this from personal experience. After being on methadone for years I switched to suboxone through a study in San Francisco and it was terrible! I was awake and kicking for ten days straight with no hope of relief by using opiates because of the antagonist. I had been on 90 mg.s of methadone and tapered to 30 mg. over over several months.
Many methadone clinics and even some doctors will require you to go through this horrifying experience and it just isn't neccessary. Find a doctor that will titrate you properly. Also, recently after being on suboxone for two years I went to my doctor and was told that he had been audited by the FDA and had to take his long term patients off of suboxone as it is meant for helping withdrawal, not maintenance. This is not how the drug was introduced nor is it how it was described to me in any of my previous experiences with the drug. Frankly this drug has been an object of contention for quite some time now and I am not surprised that this happened but I wish it hadn't. I really advise anyone switching to suboxone to use it only to get off of opiates and then get off it ASAP because it IS an opiate and you will go thraough withdrawal PERIOD.

It's rare they won't write it after you pay, tell them your drug history and tell them you have tried suboxone and it is the only thing that helps and keeps you off the other drugs (obviously if your an addict they already know you use illegal drugs so you won't get in trouble for off the street suboxone). They will do an intial drug test to see if you are really are in need and do have a problem) If you are serious about getting on the road to recovery let them know that.

U really have to wait 24 hours of not doing H before u take a suboxone to not feel sick. U have to be in some sort of state of withdrawal before u take a suboxone. I've been there don't it. I am on suboxone right now 16 mg a day. I have been clean for almost 4 months and I feel great now. Just get clean. I never thought I could get through it but I did.

Alice I feel for u. You will get better I promise. U sound like an awesome mother. Just hang in there. And it doesn't matter how long u have been doing H. The doc will still prescribe it to u. H is a very addictive drug and only Doing it once will get u hooked so don't worry about how long u have been doing it. You're still addicted and the doc will prescribe them to u I started taking subs in June of this year and have been clean for 4 months. Yes u will still feel a little depressed for a couple weeks once u start suboxone a but it'll get better. Honest it will. And no they will not take your daughter away from u. U r seeking help and that's what matters. I have a 3 year old and now in doing soooo much better. So keep your head up and please get on a suboxone program ASAP because I promise u will feel so much better

I have bin on clonazapam for about 15 years. I have also had a problem with opiods for the past 10 years. My doctor said it's just one of those things that I might need to take for the rest of my life. I take it as perscribed and when I lived in chicago I was able to take it with my suboxone and had no problems for years. Now that I have moved to Denver I am still on my clonazpam but back on H and OC's and I can't find a doctor that would be willing to perscribe me suboxone while I'm still on benzo's. Does anyone know of a doctor that is willing to help.

Daniel, you can't find a doctor because doctor's don't prefer to prescribe benzos while taking Suboxone...
Here's the reason: IT CAN KILL YOU.
Suboxone is meant to be used to stop the addictive habits that come with opiate use/abuse.
Benzos and regular opiate painkillers are bad enough, adding Suboxone to that mix is asking for a death sentence...so I can understand not being able to find ANY doctor willing to prescribe you that concoction of meds that you'd prefer to be taking.
The entire reason someone takes Suboxone in the first place is to stop the "can't get enough" attitude and no longer be dependent on such deadly doses of opiates to begin with...so why do you want to keep taking such a mixture of pills?
Suboxone has benefits in everyone from alcoholics to depression-prone people...

I'd suggest just eating the pills, or heroin...or, try to better yourself and your life and take just Suboxone. If Suboxone isn't working, it's likely you either a)aren't in withdrawals bad enough when you take it (according to the COWS scale), or b) you aren't taking a strong enough dose to curb the opiate withdrawals.

Hi ahbk9457, Simply put,NO. Stay away from the suboxone. Suboxone has one of the longest half life. Search half life of drugs to better understand it. If you suffer from withdrawalls easily trust me, you don,t want to go thru the suboxone withdrawalls. I,ve weaned down from 12mg. of sub/day to one. Stopped completely Sat. I,m sitting here Tues. @ 4AM. Can,t sleep, feel like crap. I,m a person that had a 500-600mg./day Oxy habit so I,m used to some pretty horrible wds. but this is kicking my butt. The Clonidine will help if you can get some also something to help you sleep. Preferbly a prescribed sleep aid. I wish I had some. Good Luck.

People who say Suboxone withdrawal is worse than anything else only say that because they can't remember how bad the opiate withdrawals really were. Ever notice that when you say you're hurting, and the pain is pretty bad, you always are convinced it's the worst pain you've ever felt? It's because that is your brain telling your body that you've never felt no pain worse than what you currently feel. Same for the withdrawals. Your brain tells you that this withdrawal is worse than any you ever encountered, when that simply isn't true. If you don't believe what I'm saying here, then fine...here is a doctor saying the same thing and explaining it:

It helps his cravings and he has dropped down on his suboxone within a couple of months he is happy to be on this program as he finds it successful in so many ways we pay $50 a fortnight and he gets his dosage everyday the best thing ever to help...

You won't be able to find out much here on how to go about getting your daughter back, state to state the laws will vary... usually you have to complete a course or attend parenting classes and pass a few tests showing you're not on any illicit substances.

Hang in there sweetie. You CAN do this. I have been on every opiate avail to me for 15 years....everyday! I found a suboxone doctor a month ago and have been off all of the other s*** ever since. Not saying that I haven't tried to quit before, multiple times, but this time I am truly 100% ready to rid this monkey from my back. I have a totally different mind set about quitting. This time I want to, not just trying to just to shut up the people from b****ing at me. If you are seriously ready to drop that f***ing monster, find a suboxone doctor , pay the money, and get your sub script. It saved my life.

Jolter is right.. Suboxone is an EXTREMELY powerful medicine, one that lasts for days in the body without wearing completely off.. It does lose some potency as time goes by, but if you took Suboxone today, you'd still have trace amounts in your bloodstream in 4-5 days, depending on how many milligrams of it you take. A full ceiling level, 24mg to 32mg would take over a week..because of the "half-life" that Suboxone has. There's a common 37.5 hour half-life to Suboxone, depending on various factors, some may break it down quicker, and some may take longer. But the average is 37.5 hours. So, 24mg at 8am today...37.5 hours from now, you'd have 12mg. 37.5 from that, 6mg. 37.5 hrs from that, 3mg. 37.5hrs from that, 1.5mg...and so on.
It takes a while to get it completely gone, which in-turn helps with not having such severe withdrawals from Suboxone. People "say" withdrawals from Suboxone are just the most awful thing EVER n EVER....but they are badly mistaken, or they never had a really strong addiction to short-acting opiates to begin with. Considering the half life of Suboxone, you are not left with just NONE in your system until about 2 weeks after your last dose, if it was a full 20+mg of it. So, the withdrawal symptoms are actually quite mild. The problem is, once you take Suboxone, you feel mostly normal...and you easily forget how bad withdrawals from short-acting opiates really was...like norco or percocet. So, taking Suboxone for 6 months...you've been away from the "street" drugs for quite a while, plenty of time for you to forget how intense and serious the withdrawals are...and Suboxone has been a "cushion" for you...so, when some of these people say "OMG Suboxone is the worst ever, I never should've got on it...OMG OMG"....they are naive enough to believe that Suboxone is the reason for their problems.
My biggest gripe with that is that people are blaming Suboxone...like Suboxone is the entire reason they are in this boat to begin with....don't mention the YEARS you spent eating norcos, lortabs, percocets, and oxycontin...or even HEROIN...only talk about how bad Suboxone is in the past 3 months.
People really should stand back and look at the life they were leading before Suboxone, and be thankful that such a drug exists.
Hopefully doctors are starting to come around to what Suboxone can do, and how much of a tool it can be. It's not meant to be solely used as a band-aid or suddenly heal someone from addiction. Everything about the lifestyle has to be different, or it's just wasting time (and money).

DJF:
you're blaming everyone else for your addiction. this country didn't force you to take anything, nobody held a gun to your head and forced Suboxone in your mouth. so stop with that blame bs, accept responsibility for what you did on your own. apparently you decided to get hooked on something, and now you seem to think that you don't need to accept any of the consequences from that. no sympathy here, you made your bed and now you gotta lie in it. don't expect anyone to play your game unless they are in denial too, most of us are willing to man up and be responsible for what choices we made.
