I have a bottle of alprazolam from 2005 and I'm wondering if it's still good? It's 4 years old at the time of writing this.

I asked for God for healing in 2009 like you suggested instead of taking the Xanax is my doctor suggest. I'm still struggling with the same problems in 2014 and using Xanax as a result. Thanks a lot for the useless advice. ??

In total agreement w/ Roger. Forget about mild to moderate anxiety, I have taken this drug prn for 23 years. And the answer is "No", I have never abused it. I take it DUE TO SEVERE PANIC ATTACKS. I have run, literally, out of bars, restaurants, movie theaters, and many social events. Each time absolutely convinced in my mind that I was dying. Not going to die. But overwhelmed with an immediate sensation that death was here. It's hard to explain unless you have had one .I'm glad it's around despite the high rate of abuse. It has helped me achieve a much higher quality of life.
I am in the medical profession and decline to provide an answer to the original topic because I have been on both sides of this debate.Looking at all things mental health I suggest you support mental health reform and educating the public through NAMI, the largest US organization fighting for the rights of the mentally ill on local, state, and national levels.

Just because people need help with mental health issues there is nothing wrong with it. God gave the doctor's the way to create the medications. To say people just need to pray for mental health issues is wrong. People have KILLED themselves because they were sick. You really need to think about your priorities. You are the one in need of serious help.

They say 1year from date prescribed however they will still be good they just might not be as strong I have taken medication that was over a year old and I could not tell a difference! Good luck as for everyone criticizing you ignore them I would say 99% of them need to sweep off their own back steps before trying to step on someone else's steps! Have a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year!

I just found a bottle of alprazolam with expiration date of 11/27/12. Thanks for the info on expiration on this drug. I will keep it and use when I fly.
But interestingly - I had a panic attack (way out of whack pulse and blood pressure and breathing problem as I recall) and had to call 911. When they told me I looked like I was suffering a panic attack - I said Oh - is that what this is. And then I calmed myself down without taking any med - didnt even know at the time that I had this bottle. So maybe as bad as that attack was, in my case at least, it went away apparently just by my decision to calm down myself down since I truly believed it wasn't life threatening (as the the er people told me). Just thought I would post this incident - mind over matter?

I don't know if this helps at all but I have been getting anxiety attacks my whole life and panic attacks are the only affliction documented in the bible to have been suffered by Jesus. When he was in the garden praying right before the Romans seized him. We are in good company. I know it feels s***ty. I probably know better than most but there are lots of us with anxiety out here, lots who get better. You aren't alone!

Dean: You're correct in saying that belief in Christ is all about forgiveness, starting with God forgiving us, mankind, in toto, on the Cross 2000 years ago. People who insist on a God who 'heals' physically today as in Christ's earthly days when ALL were healed of ALL their diseases fail to recognize that He did that in the capacity of Messiah to the people of Israel. It was by faith, and it was according to a pact, an agreement that is by and large recorded in the Old Testament. Jesus is great, and belief in Him will bring all SPIRITUAL blessings. He dramatically alters your interior life, and will give everlasting life, but you still have to go through earthly life with all its incumbent possibilities, good and bad. Shine it on, in other words, and realize spiritual life is not manifest physically. Otherwise, there'd be an abundant change for everyone that all can see. Insurance companies don't cut rates for believers in Jesus Christ, physically we are confronted with the same ups, downs, and general malaise faced by all with ailments be the acute or chronic.

The reason why they put an expiration date is because that is the earliest amount of time the pill could become useless.

I actually have expired xanax now and it is 100% impossible to tell what will become of the pill. I have recieved an old, large 1000 count pharmacy bottle of original Pfizer 2mg xanax bars and while some of the medicine functions exactly as a brand new pill would work, others have absolutely no effect whatsoever (or maybe just such a little effect that with my tolerance I cannot feel whatever effect they would have).

However, I am almost always calmed down by 2 or at most 4mgs and with these exired ones I have taken 10 mgs before feeling any effect and then I did not feel the normally relief to my social anxiety, with a boost of confidence and actually more energy and focus to work and write... however I just felt tired and wanted to sleep. Then later I took one pill before a seminar in which I was sleeping and my jitters and sweating stopped, I felt more energized and confident as the medicine normally acts and I was able to deliver a killer seminar

Having had a well kept bottle of 1000 that is 8 years expired I believe this is the best response... although certain factors may extend or shorten the lifetime of the medicine... there just is no rhyme or reason or definite answer. They could be held in perfect environment and be useless one month after expiration or they may last 15- 20 years after expiration... and again these could be two pills that were made in the same lab in the same day and stored in the same bottle. guessing that's why they have an expiration. that is the earliest amount of time the pill could become useless.
