What Is The Difference Between Oxycodone And Hydrocodone (Page 2)

my Dr has changed my medication fron norco to percocet, and now my feet and ankles are swelling severely. What is the difference between hydrocodone and oxycodone?
After back surgery I was originally given vicodin, but it made me feel drowsy so I was then percocet. To my surprise the percocet woke me up and made me feel more normal Can anyone give me the reason why as I thought these were similar medications.
This isn't listed as a common side effect in most of the literature, but I've heard anecdotal evidence of oxycodone causing peripheral edema and have had the exact same symptom myself after switching from Norco to oxycodone. I had no adverse side effects from the Norco, but was switched to oxycodone because the Norco wasn't providing sufficient pain control. After a week or so I noticed what I thought was weight gain, but then a week after that I experienced significant pitting edema in my feet and ankles - my toes swelled until they looked like sausages, and I had to wear flip-flops because none of my shoes fit. I had some success with potassium and calcium supplements, but edema is a sign of more serious issues and shouldn't be ignored. You should definitely speak with your doctor about it, and ask about alternatives to the oxycodone. Also, you might want to consider medication without acetaminophen (it's actually worse for your liver than the oxycodone itself), or at least take NAC (n-acetylcysteine) and milk thistle supplements (available at GNC) to counteract some of the harmful effects of acetaminophen on your liver. Just be sure to tell your doctor about any supplements you take.
They are both narcotic analgesics, however, the Oxycodone is stronger than they Hydrocodone.
Oxycodone, by itself, doesn't usually cause peripheral edema, however, it could be the Acetaminophen, since it can sometimes cause people to retain fluids and, if that is what is causing it, it would have also happened with the Norco.
Have you consulted your doctor?
Whenever edema occurs, it is very important to discover what is causing it, since it can be a sign of other serious medical conditions. Even swelling of the feet and legs can be a sign of congestive heart failure.
